How many games did you buy for your primary console last generation (PS2, Xbox, GCN)?

As a generation closes it is a good time to take a head count to see where we stand in relation to the market. My guess is that, on average, the majority of us bought more games than the average user.

Due to limitations of the polls (I cannot ask you how many consoles AND how many games on each) I ask you ONLY count the number of games on 1 console -- your primary gaming console. If you split your time evenly, then do an average.

Bosnus question: How many games were bought:

- retail, full price
- retail, bargin bin ($30 or less for US)
- used

Ps- Also include games given as gifts if they were bought with the primary intention as a gift for you.

Total games purchased: 13 games.

Retail, full price: 5 (Mario Kart Double Dash!!, Madden 2003, Madden 2004, Mario Party 4, TimeSplitters 2)

Retail, bargin bin: 3 (NBA Street Volume 2, 007 Nightfire, Metroid Prime)

Used: 5 (Super Monkey Balls 2, NFL 2K3, Rogue Leader, Wave Race, Super Smash Brothers Melee)

I rented a number of games and such, but life got busy and Battlefield 1942 / Desert Combat dominated a good 2 years of gaming (which happen to fill in some of the sloooow times on the GCN) as well as Half-Life 2 / CS:S, Madden PC online, and BF2 from 2004 on. Overall I don't think I got the value out of the GCN I wanted mainly because it didn't develp a library of games I wanted and the PC did.

My most played games were Mario Kart, Madden, Mario Party, TimeSplitters, and Super Monkey Balls. I still play Mario Kart almost every week with my wife.

There are quite a few good games missing from my library that I had wanted to pick up (both Zelda if I could find the time, PoP, Metroid Prime Echos, F-Zero GX, Super Mario Sunshine, Soulcalibur 2, Pikmin 1&2 [which I enjoyed when I played, but the replay value made a buy questionable], Mario Tennis). Some of the other really good games (like RE4, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario) just don't really interest me. I loved my N64 and had nearly 30 games for it, but the GCN seemed to me to have fewer high quality 4 player games and virtually no online gaming. For a number of reasons I ended up doing more PC gaming this time around.

If I get a Wii I am sure a lot of those games I missed out on I would pick up as I waited for good Wii games to crop up, but right now Wii isn't my primary choice for a next gen console.

Ps- Please forgive me for not making this an open poll... I hate not knowing what people voted! Esp. seeing as 3 people out of 5 already said over 26!

Of the close to 30 games i bought for the PS2, only 4-5 were full price, 7-8 used, the rest bargain. You can find most games for 20€ and less nowadays (new and sealed) about a year after release.

I shall borrow your format to make it easier to see, maybe we could all do that, adding categories as necessary

Total games purchased:
24 games.

Retail, full price: 12 (Burnout 2, Dead Or Alive 3, Forza Motorsport, Halo, Halo 2, Jet Set Radio: Future, Moto GP:URT, Moto GP:URT 2, Project Gotham Racing, Project Gotham Racing 2, TimeSplitters 2, TOCA Race Driver 2)

Retail, bargin bin: 2 (Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Rainbow Six: Black Arrow)

Used: 3 (Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Shenmue 2, Panzer Dragoon: Orta)

Free Games (Gifts etc.): 7 (Azurik, Unreal Championship, Need For Speed Underground, Midtown Madness 3, Sega GT, Rallisport Challenge, Splinter Cell)

I should just elaborate on the free games. Midtown Madness 3 and Sega GT were given to me in exchange Quantum redshift, which i purchased at full price, so maybe they count as full price games? Azurik and Rallisport Challenge were two free games given my MS because i got a launch day xbox, then they cut the price a month later. UC, NFS: Underground and Splinter Cell were birthday or Christmas present.

I would say my Xbox was marginally my main platform, but i played on the PC a lot too. Unreal Tournament, Mafia, Half Life 2 and other odd games here and there took up my PC time, but I spent a stupid amount of time on PGR2. I have accumulated over 12 million points online ( over several thousand races) in the space of 3 years, and it's still one of my favourite ever games.
I also really enjoyed Halo, but less so Halo 2. I loved LAN play on Halo but online Halo 2 did nothing for me. I also played SC through to completion, as well as PGR, Burnout 2, Moto GP 1 and 2, Rallisport Challenge and Sega GT (Racing fan? Me?)

Games i've missed include Serious Sam (Loved that on the PC), Burnout 3 and 4, Moto GP 3, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, Jade Empire, Kung Fu Chaos, Rallisport Challenge 2 and for some reason, i always wanted to have Steel Battalion. Big stompy robot games aren't usually my thing but  that controller

Most of my time is now spent on the PC or 360, though the brilliant back compatibility of the 360 means i do venture on to the Xbox from time to time to play some of the old games.

Platform: Xbox
Total games purchased: 25 games.

Retail, full price: 7 (Psychonauts, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath, Burnout 3, Chronicles of Riddick, Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction, Star Wars KotOR 2, Brothers in Arms Road to Hill 30)

Retail, bargin bin: 5 (Halo 2,Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden Black, Beyond Good & Evil, Prince of Persia Sands of Time,)

Used: 11 (Crimson Skies, Halo, Galleon, Project Gotham Racing 2, Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Jet Set Radio Future, Brothers in Arms Earned in Blood, Voodoo Vince, Fable, Shenmue 2, Oddworld Munch's Oddyssee, Second Sight)

I also bought PS2 last August and have 8 games for it. Last-gen was pretty nice gaming era. Right now Iwant tobuy only one game for Xbox1 - Splinter Cell Double Agent and several games on PS2 that I missed, but I already jumped in and 360 will be my main gaming machine for at least next 2 years.

Platform PS2:
Total amount of games bought: over 50, most of them full price, maybe 5 or less from bargain bin or secondhand.

Wow, I didn't even know I had this many games. Good thing you made me count! Out of the blue I would have said "maybe around 16, or 17" ... turns out I'm quite wrong!

Platform: Xbox
Total games purchased: 29 games.
Retail, full price: 13
Retail, bargain bin: 8
Used:8

Add 2 more games that were bundeled with the console, that makes 31 games and that doesn't even include the ones I borrowed from friends. I haven't really played on my Xbox in almost a year now though, its all about PC and 360 these days. A game store in my area currently offers Xbox 360 titles at a reduced price (almost 50% off) when you trade in at least 2 used Xbox games. I think I'm gonna do that and get a few more games for my 360 (only 4 games so far) ... ;)

I have over 60 PS2 games on my shelf now, about 15 full price, about 20 bargain, the rest were second hand. To many to even count. Some of them I have sold back, and I am buying "new" SH when I have the chance. I will sell them back - hopefully all of them - by the end of the year, to make room for the PS3.
I also have bought 5 xbox games (halo2 bundled and 4 SH) and 5 GC games (3 full price - Zelda, Metroid and RE4, and two SH)

GTA VC (platinum?)

MGS2 (platinum? used?)

Dancing Stage Fusion

Feels like I've missed one.
Still looking to buy a few more games since I won't enter next gen until March 23:rd.

I haven't had my PS2 for two years which may ba an explanation to the low number of games.
I haven't only had time to play through a few games and some are even untouched.

I must have bought around 36 PS2 games.....WOW. I havent even noticed:oops:

All of them retail full price+platinum

Just to give an indication of the average number of games/console.

From the numbers in Sony's Q3 release Sony has shipped slightly above 11 PS2 software titles per shipped PS2 console.

I was initially a bit shocked wen I counted my games some months ago, and then added up the sum of money I'd spent on them!
About €2500 just in games!!!! And they say €600 for a console is a big investment and too much to spend :D
Not to mention the 100 or so DVD's I've bought since buying the PS2, add another €2000.
€4500 + €560 (PS2) = €5060 I've managed to spend because of PS2!!!!

For PS3 I've already bought a front projector and screen, that's about €2500 already, still, I expect to buy as many games and Blu-ray movies for my PS3 as I did for PS2

Platform: Xbox
Currency: CAN
Total games purchased: ~30
Retail, full price: ~20, $60-70
Retail, bargin bin: ~8, $10-20
Other: eBay, 2 ~$30

Something like that. I'm not at home right now, so it's not quite exact. It was only towards the end where I started getting into bargain bin as I didn't have time to play games and I post-poned my purchases. It wasn't like...because I was getting smarter with my credit card or anything. :p But yeah, a couple were really really really stupid purchases (at full price), such as Return to Castle Wolfenstein (when I already had it on PC, but I thought co-op would be the bomb), Red Faction 2 (marketing suckered me), MechAssault 1&2 (loved them, but not for full price).

I still want to check out one or two games that are exclusive to last gen such as Family Guy and... I think that's it.

Highlights:

Fable - it was quite unique despite all its problems, and I just liked walking around the forests. The trees and day/night cycle left quite the impression with the bloom effects giving this surreal fantasy look.

Halo - Played it to death. The game when I brought the Xbox over to a friend's house (57" widescreen) for 4 player DM or 2 player co-op, some good times playing this.

Halo 2 - We didn't really spend as much time playing through this. We pretty much agreed that Legendary became an ePenis contest with the single death = restart. It was more annoying than anything. Online was great, but I hate playing well; I just screwed around. I mean, most of the Halo:CE games degenerated into tom-foolery anyway.

Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders & Heroes - couple of the best gameplay experiences I've ever had, emphasizing strategy and quick wit to change tactics with a background in RPG-ish troop management. The only "strategy" game I feel that works with a gamepad.

Max Payne 1&2: As a story, I think I appreciated it more from the couch than my command chair (PC). Sure the graphics were toned down, but it just felt better.

MechAssault: Needed a higher budget and more focus on the story. 1&2 felt more like a short story split into two. The timing of the 2nd game's release couldn't have been worse either. Two days AFTER Christmas AND in the wake of Halo 2? Might as well slit your own belly.

Otogi: Very sweet environment destruction. I spent a good 30+ hours getting all the items and special items. It was pretty repetitive, but building destruction... the most cheating weapon in the game pretty much requires 100% destruction in all the levels. It was frustrating at times, but it was worth it. The environments were quite beautiful at times...until I destroyed them. :devilish:

NHL Hitz: A demon, a cow, a shark, and a clown. The world's most awesome hockey line-up. Second line-up was a zombie, a horse, a knight and a snowman. Ridiculous. The best was the announcer.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: Besides the relatively smooth and good graphics, the quick save actually convinced me to finish a splinter cell game. :p

This poll saturates kinda early. I bought (not pirated) at least 100 games for my PS2, half at full-retail, half from the bargain bins. Most are still in their shrink wrap, as I've only played about 20 of them so far. Hopefully, games this generation will be shorter...

Retail, bargain bin: 7

In my opinion, $50 is way too expensive for most video games. Actually, some of the games I purchased new totally weren't worth $50 (Fight Night 2, X-men Legends 2), but I justified it because I buy so few new games anyway. I have a pet theory that a lot of games that didn't do so hot at retail were simply released at far too high of a price point. They need to do a better job of figuring out what the market thinks a game is worth. I generally buy games at $17.99 from the used shelf. I would be happy to buy them new at $19.99, but usually, once the used game is at $17.99, it's nearly impossible to find the game new on the rack. It's like publishers just plain quit producing the game after it falls in price.

I have close to 50 games on my PS2

Almost all were new purchases (some were $20-30 though) -- only a handful were used (maybe 3-4?).

I only had one "last gen" console, and it was the PS2. Games purchased:

GTA3 - Retail
GTA3-VC - Retail
GTA3-SA - Retail
Gran Tourismo 4 - Bargain Bin

That is one of the points of the thread ;) GCN has about a 9.3 attach rate from the last figures I found and the PS2 is at about 10.4. With about 50% of B3D posters who voted skewing above 26 and some waaaay above, it gives a context of how hardcore we are :p

Limited options on the poll, sorry to say. And while not surprised at a few 26+, nearly 50% is a lot! If I could fix the poll I would but a little late now.

Might want to modify the poll to break the 26+ option down a bit, as I imagine a fair number of people here have quite a bit more than that (myself included).

I had over 40 PS2 games, but I sold a few, so I'm not sure if I'm still above the 40 mark or not.
