Horizon Forbidden West [PS, PC]

Im not touching the performance mode, im finding the same as what DF reported on the 60fps (performance) mode. Been playing most of the evening and i absolutely think the 30fps (quality) mode is the way to go if you want fidelity. And thats coming from a pc gamer (main platform). The 30fps mode is very good in this one, theres 30fps and theres 30fps, in FW it feels smooth and consistent and the game-type, 3rd person/non fast paced-precision and much of it is exploring (for me atleast), the 30fps mode does fit much better.
Would i have liked 60fps and quality? Yeah, but atleast i have an excuse for a double dip later on :p

Amazing looking game, the best the PS5 has to offer so far. Never thought FW would take that place, and it seems the majority thinks so.

Behind scene but only partially translate in english many dutch and no subtitle

Playing Horizon I'm struck by how grainy/noisy the image is, especially on performance mode. Very little temporal stability from frame to frame, nearly constant shimmering in grass, on the edges of surfaces, etc. Amazing looking game, but I can't think of another game that made the same choices regarding image quality.

I remember playing ZD on my brothers PS4 and I noticed the shimmering, almost to the point of rippling, grass immediately, I wondered if it was an effect of some kind of "cheating" to get the rest of the game looking so good. The weird thing is I am far from a videophile so, many things others complain about would escape me, so I don't know I just thought it odd this stood out to me so much.

Good to see I'm not crazy with a lot of people talking about it now. I dont really remember anybody talking about it back then (maybe they did but I didnt notice).

In graphics, its always 'cheating' to obtain the visual fidelity we want. Procedural rendering was a part of HZD.

Edit: in that HZFW video Chris1515 shared with me, they say that one person has worked full time for four years to create the cloud system. Damn.

Started to play, game looks briliant in resolution mode, in performance mode 1800cb is just not good enough (especially on far background). Thx Chris for tip, lowering camera sensitivity helps in 30fps mode.
It's really a pity they couldn't use DRS in the 60fps mode (like Insomniac PS5 games). If it was a native PS5 game they could have used that and the game could have being of higher resolution on average (seeing how stable the fps is currently). I blame cross gen so I blame Jimbo.

Also DRS is ideally combined with a FOV option. :yep2: For instance in Kena it works very well. UE4 is actually better than Decima engine here.

Drs with 40fps target would be briliant

Audio in the game appears to be buggy at the moment. Sometimes the audio mix will get screwed up and it'll add reverb/echo to some NPCs or it'll reduce the volume of some NPCs. Appears to only happen with voices and evidently a reboot of the game might fix it although that doesn't always fix it.

Forcing 2 channel audio in PS5 audio settings is the only way to fix it for some people. Happened to Cohh during his stream today and the only way he could fix it was by forcing 2 channel audio.

Apparently the game or PS5 is incorrectly detecting how many channels is available over HDMI and sometimes auto detecting that you have 7.1 channel audio when you may only have 2.1 or 5.1 channel.

SB

that sure is a lot of peach fuzz

I would not be surprised if later they patch the performance mode.
I don't know. We are starting to see the limits of an old engine designed for PS4. Decima was perfect for PS4, but ported for PS5 it's objectively obsolete compared to others engines. Even a small team like 4A games could implement RT lighting at 60fps in an open world game. It's like they are not even trying to modernize their engine here. PS4 graphics at 4K + more details seem enough for them.

I think for their next game it would be best if they used UE5.

Why do you keep stabbing at the GG devs? Its the best looking PS5 title to date, besting games that are PS5-only. The majority of the comments on here, YT, facebook and basically everywhere else are super-impressed by FW's visual presentation, including Digital Foundry's technical analysis. Engines do evolve you know, why would they start all-over again, in modern days things adapt to the new platforms.
As far i know, this engine is pushing/maxing the PS5 and the results are there. Scaling does work when you put effort in it, GG has previous experience with this doing the PC port aswell.

You cant expect ray tracing, which is a very expensive feature, to appear in a game this heavy on rasterization on the hardware that is provided. They made the same decisions for GT7, the devs have their own priorities, if they want performance over a visual feature, they will and are free to choose so. Its not just PS4 graphics at 4k either, watch the DF analysis and the (dutch) interview where they clearly highlight this game is taking advantage of the PS5's hardware. Strongly doubt GG themselfs are lying about something like that. Even the SSD is used extensively, to the point the PS4 version is using a simple video just because of the HDD.

Their not even trying.... they had people working for four years full time for a single effect (the sky) to look as good as it does, and the PS5 version clearly has its huge advantages there too.

Your one of those that still doesnt believe in scalability and adaptable technologies. Your wrong.

Oh and 4A's game was far from using the same rasterization-prowess as this one does, with the main settings lowered alot to achieve its ray tracing on consoles. GG made the right choice here lol.

Im not switching between modes as Im sure resolution mode is the way to go but now I switch between lg game mode and standard mode that bring some frames interpolation and looks better and smoother but with cost of some artifacts when fast rotating camera near Aloy hair and compass line ;d 40 fps would be so beneficial eh

The game is cross gen. They clearly don't use the full PS5 feature set. For the performance mode if they can improve the image quality it would be great. And the game has much more bugs than HZD with all the problem linked to the pandemics and work on so three console.

I only had time for a brief 20 minute dip in yesterday and the visuals really do pop. YouTube videos simply don't do it justice.

I'm looking forward to diving in properly later today.

So I planned to buy it in a few months, because I've other games to finish, but it seems I won't be able to wait... Now, I didn't read a lot of review because I don't want to be spoiled of anything, but is the game pretty "clean/bug free" right now, or is it better to wait a little ?
