With all these accessories the 360 is starting to look like a techie-Lego :LOL: Even though full HD resolutions are currently being supported over component (unofficially until 2010?) my guess is the 360 will get an HDMI connection sooner or later.

Is it just the picture or is the HDDVD just as big as a X360? Which means the HDDVD "add-on" is just a very ugly HDDVD player - compared to the Toshiba HD1 or even the very sexy Samsung Bluray Player - and not that "very small add-on" the X360 was supposed to get...

EDIT: Ok i checked the other pics and it's definitely not as big as the picture you posted shows! :)

It's the book looking thing on the right, sat on a pedestal. Doesn't really work as an AV solution cosmetically IMO. I'm sure the vast majority would prefer a single integrated unit then a small DVD player unit and next to that a half-sized unit. The HD-DVD drive looks like it's got an ariel in that pic. Any news on what that's for?

Some have actually made the point that 2 drives could be functionally superior (if not cosmetically) as you wouldnt need to swap discs to play a movie and then swap back when youre done.

Say youre playing a certain game regularly, you could watch an HD-DVD then when youre done with the movie, jump right back into the game without leaving the couch.

I think the perception is yeah "one box please" but i can see both sides of it.

EDIT: I also wonder if theyll allow you to load 2 different games into each drive, i could see that being useful as well. Have one drive loaded with your favorite multiplayer game that you regularly play, the other with whatever SP game youre trying to "beat" at the moment.

It also would take the sting out of swapping if 2 disc games ever come to pass...

Its plugged in via USB port right? Would it be possible you could plug it into your PC? Without the need of a 360.

I believe I read somewhere that you will be able to do that.

Infact, it's part of MS's integration plan/live everywhere, etc.. where all 360 peripherals work with your windows PC.

If it's possiible I guess you can see where I'm leading to. If the PS3 has the ability to read usb devices, I dont think it would be impossible for it to work. Of course sony would have to enable it via software and I highly doubt they would do that. And I'm not sure anyone who would even buy a ps3 and 360 hd-dvd combo. But just theoretically speaking, I dont think its impossible.

Anyways, any confirmation on what these things will cost? IMO I cant see it being higher than 300, and I cant see it being under 200.

The only report on price I've heard is MS saying they want XB360+HDDVD to be price competitive with PS3, so that'd place it at the $200 end.

IMO it would have to be competitive with the $500 version, otherwise MS does Sony's job of making the PS3 seem like a value to consumers.

The only problem is, I don't think they ever specified which PS3 nor which 360. I believe their comment was that the cost of the 360 with the add-on would be “cheaper” than a PS3. However, being cheaper could mean:

Core 360 + HD DVD < $500 Core PS3 :: $0 - $199

Core 360 + HD DVD < $600 Premium PS3 :: $0 - $299

Premium 360 + HD DVD < $500 Core PS3 :: $0 - $99

Premium 360 + HD DVD < $600 Premium PS3 :: $0 - $199

So, we've got a price range of up to $299, that would, technically, be cheaper than the PS3. I think $99 is overly optimist, but plausible. I would guess somewhere between $150 and $199 is more likely, with the possibility of the HDD being required (for some reason or another). I assume driver support for the peripheral would come via a Live update and with a firmware update CD (included with the drive) for those broadband handicap.

Personally, I say skip the HD-DVD drive, and go straight to a hybrid setup. Now that I would buy for my 360.

Of course, we're making cost assumptions in the absence of a 360 price drop this year, which is a possibility.

I'm actually kind of liking the idea of 2 optical drives, imagine if the PS3 came with 2 drives...

Already been confirmed by Microsoft that the HDD is not required for the HD-DVD addon. Somewhere in this thread... I'm too lazy to go through the whole thing again and find it. If you haven't been keeping up with Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD since their release, it's a good read for you anyway.

Technically it's not impossible, but they would have to reverse engineer the SMD security chipset and drivers, the legalities of which would be questionable.

One word, or rather 4 letters: "DCMA"

It would be very funny if this silly "format war" ends up with 2 coexisting formats selling about the same (but still trailing behind DVD by a long margin), and Sony eventually starts supporting HDDVD... And release an HDDVD add-on for PS3... Microsoft could release yet another add-on, a Bluray add-on for X360...

Then the war would become an "add-on war", and the winner is the platform with the most attached units!

Eventually our consoles will look like a Katamari, and will start rolling around the house getting everything in its path stuck to it, and eventually they will grow so big that they will eat our furniture, our pets, US, our house, our cars, our buildings, then clouds, islands, mountains, countries, then planets and the stars in the sky!! Our existence will never be the same, and it will all be Sega's fault, they were the first to go add-on crazy! :LOL:

Ok sorry, went in a bit of a tangent.

Thats how I see the formats ending up but I'd be shocked if either MS or Sony supported other side if their format remains competitive. Unless market is flooded with dual format players I think MS and Sony will stick to their respective formats exclusively.
