Halo: Reach

I always find that annoyingly illusion breaking in games that have it, Crysis for example.

I much prefer Halo's method where you either find a marine to shoot the thing, or take your chances and have a marine drive the warthog .

Hopefully, they've had the marines take mandatory driver's ed. courses and that they are better at driving now. :D

I don't agree that it can reduse the "believability" of the game. If you wear a helmet with 26th century's HMDS tech, you should be able to operate the AAgun/canon from the driver's place.
But my problem with it is that relying on a bot to make the shooting takes out a big part of the fun & challenge of the game.
It's not accidental that driving a ghost or a Banshee (or flyign a hornet) is alot more fun and competitive, gameplay wise, while the warthog feels boring, more like driving a combat taxi.
If bungie prefers the manned gun because it serves better their co-op gameplay its ok, just (when in sp mode) give to the player the option to use the gun even if it is required to be manned for this.

Actually in Crysis you need to mount the vehicle turret or weapons in highest difficulty setting like Halo. Though on lower difficulty settings you can drive and shoot. This would be the best solution to catter to all tastes in Halo with maybe an on/off switch or difficulty based like Crysis.

Maybe, but I don't have the time to play hardcore much anymore, and seeing an EMPTY turret just swinging around willy nilly hitting things is hugely illusion breaking for me.

At least with a tank, I can assuming the tank AI is taking care of things or you have a crew in the tank..

But it's all personal preference, I find having to find a gunner far cooler and more immersive. And hopefully Bungie sticks to that. People that don't like it can play all sorts of other shooters that have turrets with a missing turret gunner shooting stuff. :p

Why do all of you guys want to shoot the turret?
Driving the warthog is much more fun than operating the turret, you can do splatters, jumps, rolls etc.

I definitely don't want to see a Crysis style driver operated chaingun on the warthog, if you so desperately want to shoot and drive theyre are plenty of other vehicles in Halo that let you do that. The Warthog is the iconic vehicle for the franchise, they're not going to change how it works.

And the marines make excellent gunners, I find them better than most actual people (except pros)

Also it's interesting that they're integrating MP maps into campaign levels.
It probably is a space saving measure so they don't need to have store different assets for each MP map.
Quite a few of the series previous MP maps often had very different environments to that seen in the campaign levels.

It could be space saving, but if the AI is halfway decent in Reach taking excellent MP maps and incorporating them into SP allows for some really great sequences. Places like Standoff, Sandtrap, and so forth would work fine in a SP sequence and could offer a neat coop sandbox as well.

Maybe this means we could see some AI bots and beefed up Fire Fight

Firefight with 8 people and 30+ enemies would be insane. :) And then throw in vehicles. I think Reach might be the first FPS I've even thought about doing multiplayer (other than pure co-op) in over 5 years.

If it ships with that level of aliasing I would like to know how they define addressing the aliasing issue

That shot seems a crop from that trailer... And IIRC from the trailer, the cropped part would cover a very small part of the screen, which means the actual resolution of this image is really gigantic. So i guess that's just a crop before sampling back to 720p.

I was told that in left4Dead vs mode you control one of the boss zombies and those minion zombies spawn in. Something like you as elite can only spawn in when the drop ship comes by that is like in 15 seconds or so.

I would love to be on the Covenant side again real humans in FF or Campaign. That would be awesome and I have been begging for "cross player" like this long before the concept had a name. While it may be a challenge to impliment in SP I think it is possible as a bonus mode: Spartans do normal respawns; Covenant controlled players spawn at the next check point. So when you die the Spartans essentially "win" that encounter. In FF it is much more direct as the mode is competitive.

That would be awesome to be honest with you..Who knows as Bungie could have that in FF as a big surprise for us..Just wondering, are you going to be part of the Reach mp beta when its available in May??

Well they've already hinted at that, by confirming that Elites are once again in MP and are not going to be hunched over or scaled down to match the hitbox area of Spartan character models (like in H3)

But they've said that both Spartans and Elites are going to be balanced, which most likely means for assymetric MP like humans vs covenant, rather than just the regular modes which would be restrict you to play as Spartans.

I bought the Halo Reach beta and I got ODST for free ;)

Sounds awesome if true. I always wanted to play as the Elites in MP, but I thought they looked kind of dumb when hunched over like that.

Do we have any good info on animation other that quips, e.g. how robust animation blending will be and physics interaction?

Reach developer blog was updated.

Yes, the alpha is done, and everything is getting better day by day. Why else would I be working on a sunny Saturday afternoon. :) The actual MP beta that we release to the public is undergoing massive improvements!
