Halo: Reach

I saw the teaser video over at Teamxbox and my jaw dropped..Spartans using jetpacks, customizable loadouts, doing barrel rolls, getting splattered by a ghost but surviving by dropping a yellow shield that destroyed the ghost is simply awesome..The graphics also look excellent along with the lighting, animations, sound effects, etc..Also, the Invasion gametype sounds pretty darn crazy...This teaser trailer officially raised my hype by a factor of INFINITY...WOW...Guys, it looks like we're going to be having one heck of a gaming experience when the beta mp is out.......

if Reach's gameplay is similar to the feel of Tribes (although I dont think they have skiing in Reach), I may for once buy my own copy of a Halo game instead of going over to a friend's house to play

the video gave me high hopes

Looks so damn awesome. Environmental geometry looks very Halo 3-esque, which makes the footage look less impressive than the SP footage. In my opinion anyways.

Looks great! Headhunter looks cool! Wonder how that works. What about Active Roster? Is that clans? Bout time if so.

The more I watched this vid the more I like it. It's a well edited trailer. I've found myself watching each Reach video so far over and over :D

It's great to see Halo back to being a great looking game graphically again. Maybe not the very best, but upper tier and among the best, at least.

The animation is also waaay better. There is a ragdoll gif at Neogaf that really points it out. I love whatever graphical effects they are doing for the Spartan armor on Reach. The character models in the assassinations are excellent.

Also, jetpacks seems pretty awesome. I'm not a online MP guy so, the new modes and such dont mean a lot to me, but jetpacks, seems cool. Though with every new mode/feature they introduce I cant help but think of the inevitable balance issues that are going to happen lol.

The trailer also reminds me of a lot of other games. Cliffyb tweeted that it's like Tribes, Tribes was maybe before my time but it reminds me of Unreal Tournament 2k3/4 in color scheme and a weapon or two, and Shattered Horizons for the jetpacks.

So... what is Bungies effort to reduce aliasing?
Indeed, they may have consider a AAA solution like the one used in "metro 2003":
4A Games' chief technical officer Oles Shishkovtsov interviewed by the DF said:
"The 360 was running deferred rotated grid super-sampling for the last two years, but later we switched it to use analytical anti-aliasing (AAA)," reveals Shishkovtsov. "That gave us back around 11MB of memory and dropped AA GPU load from a variable 2.5-3.0 ms to constant 1.4ms. The quality is quite comparable. The AAA works slightly different from how you assume. It doesn't have explicit edge detection
1.4ms out 33ms is less of 5% of the rendering time, Bungies may have prioritized other effects, choices are always disputable anyway ;)

So... what is Bungies effort to reduce aliasing?

Well we have seen alpha clips from the single player and multiplayer game. Seems at this point in time there is no solution to AA, I'd be shocked if they implemented any at this point, as it would make sense for it to be in place for the beta.

Bungie did say that they were going to implement AA in Reach. So, I believe its going to be 2xAA...

They said they would definitely address the aliasing issue Halo 3 had, but didn't specify how.
So they'll probably be saying that the increased resolution, DoF, and altered lighting/contrast/color palette has 'addressed' the issue.

Also anyone else really like the explosions/weapon effects in that vid?
Some crazy particle effects going on.
Halo has always been good at that kind of stuff (eg. the plasma grenade explosions)

Jet Packs are interesting, so basically they confirmed that you can pick your armor ability before matches? There probably also going to have some of the more alluring armor abilities available only on the map for people to fight over.

I like how the HUD now tells your map location (callout), will make it much easier to play team games with less experienced players.

It being 720P vertical this time should reduce aliasing some, no?

Also, it was mentioned at GAF, and I noticed too. one of the scenes seems to display a noticeably better level of graphical fidelity. This one. Any ideas?

I'm pretty psyched for the beta now, less than 9 weeks away! They are revealing a lot in the beta, I remember a interview with a Bungie guy where he almost seemed taken aback by how much he said they were going to reveal in the beta, like he almost felt it was too much.

Anyway it looks like Bungie will be launching a nice assault on IW in terms of multiplayer innovations and modes.
