Halo: Reach

Very impressive for a Halo game for sure, giving full props for the scale of the battle and the lighting effects. It's still lacking some in your face wow effects for me though which keeps it from reaching the top tier graphics but I'm sure Bungie isn't showing all the cards yet.

Pretty impressive since the footage is from a early build of the game...Im loving the new look at the shotgun as it looks much more deadlier and menacing then ever before.I also think the new grenade launcher looks pretty cool as well..Some people over the Teamxbox forums have noticed that the in video, there seems to be some sort of cover system in place..If THAT is true, then the cover system be in 1st person or 3rd?

Yes, Bungie said in one of their recent updates in response to the criticism of those first screens, that they are still adding/polishing a lot. Adding "decorators" was one term they used.

Doesn't look alpha to me. More like beta, but they are calling it that in hopes that they will be able to make some improvements before the multiplayer beta ships.

Sounds like 5 player coop? Anyhow LARGE sandbox missions with 4 players, I cannot wait!

Hey NRP... Marksmanship rifle :p

I saw sprint in there toward the end and marines were taking cover. It looks like there may be some motion blur and like others you could see some aliasing. I really liked the night filter here:

Looking good so far, better than I expected.

If i heard correctly, when they were showing the girl from the trailer being modeled, they said they are modeling the main characters using something around 1 million polys per character... Now, i know that this usually means the base model for normal map and watnot, but the model they showed there looked very close, if not exactly the same as they had on the (supposedly) real time cutscene...

Now, i don't think they are using tessellation, as the game terrain shows quite clearly a low polycount and i don't think they would use tessellation for characters (which is something no one has done on 360) but not on terrain (which has been done before)... But, if that's the case, then how the hell they managed to transport such a hyper detailed model to their engine with no sign of any quality loss?

Diminishing returns in regards to poly budgets (e.g. the silhouette between a 100 poly circle and 1000 poly circle is hard to distinguish) and a lot of detail is baked into the normals and textures. Tada!

Correction, its called the Designated Marksman Rifle.... :p

The animations of one of the Spartans assasinating that Elite looked pretty smooth..Did you see how menacing the shotgun looks now..I loved that...Reach is shaping up to be an amazing game..Can't wait for May 3rd..

mm... first time watching, I definitely thought the night vision clip was pretty cool. Wonder how the co-op will play out. Other players taking on the roles within Team Noble :?:

They're using the absolutely industry standard method of creating a multi-million poly model in Zbrush to use for normal mapping and that's it, don't expect any fancy new tech stuff here.

And the cutscene was in-engine and using ingame assets, I think we're far beyond the point where it could be doubted.

Well, just saw the vidoc. I must say, I was a fan of HALO when HALO 1 arrived. I had loved it, played it on PC and had fun with it. Down the line when HALO2 arrived, I didn't really feel like buying it. THen HALO3 happened and I felt disappointed first that it won't come to the PC, but when it did finally arrive on X360, I felt even bad as it was not something I would like to play at all. HALO ODST was just another milking of the franchise for me, though the colours improved a little for the better and I had mentioned that here at B3D.
People might remember me as a person who doesn't like HALO. Well, yes, I do not like HALO because of its toony look n feel and flat surfaces. But, once back in time when HALO CE was released, I was a fan of HALO, but as games improved all around me HALO seemed stuck in that same era and I didn't feel like falling in love with it again.

But it has changed now ! For the first time I feel HALO seems to be back  ! Seeing that game running in the vidoc is an eye opener. The brilliant HDR lighting which they already had in HALO3 has finally found a partner to illuminate:- the high res models and textures ! The combination is brilliant :) !
I , being a lighting Artist, always find myself weak in the knees when I see good implementation of lighting in a game. This time , with HALO REACH, I have to admit, I am loving it once again  !

Bungie, I am officially a fan now:cool: !
For the first time, I feel I will be missing something by not having an X360 ! The screens feel okay, but in motion, it is the most beautiful HDR implementation I have ever seen.

Wish Insomniac also learns this lighting trick for R3 !

The environment renderer and model detail shown so far look exceptional. The particles and dynamic lighting add considerably. Halo fans look to have a lot to look forward too!

Look, I am the owner of that gun, therefore can call it what I want. Now if you have a problem with MY Marksman Rifle we can settle this in some MLG Team Swat. :devilish: (Yes, I feel cocky right now after seeing the videos + having a KDR in the 4:1 range the last week in MW2.)

I am really curious what they are doing with MP. I am not the biggest fan of the old style quake games where weapons and power ups spawn in fields. That said I think Halo is the pinnacle of that style and Halo 3 plays exceptionally well (better a tried and true formula with excellent ranged combat than something novel and broken). I really dig team games, especially when there is an objective and players of various skills/interests can take different roles. Hence my love for TF2 and BF1/2. Sprint is in, the videos show a lot of marines doing sticky cover ala KZ2 with lean and peak. Maybe Bungie is adding the "option" for gamers to take cover. May not always be useful, but I could see, especially in Coop, how the guys on the front lines taking cover while snipers in the rear spotting could add a nice option to "dig in".

Whoa, you actually own that gun which is pretty nice..Im looking to get the Savage 110 bolt action rifle sometime for my birthday...I have a pistol that was modified to accept shotgun shells so any burglar who tries to rob my house is going to have his arm or leg blown off...:devilish:

Now, im interested in the cover mechanics for Reach since it could be useful in certain situations like you stated earlier which would be fun to use.For the mp portion, leaning and peeking would be great especially in team based objective gametypes like CTF, Assault, etc..The open world like gameplay for Reach leads me to believe that it will feature 5 player co-op and allow each of the squad members to go where they want to in order to complete objectives and side missions..I'd be happily surprised if the game features destructible enviornments like BF BC2 but obviously not at that level of destruction...
