Halo: Reach

If you're talking dead ones, sure. But that's hardly any effort to render. If they're behind walls or off screen, it doesn't count because they're not being rendered.

I mean in the playspace, ie. if you detach the camera and fly to the top of the map you should be able to see that many, barring the few that are in nooks and crannies (ie. no map is completely open)

Are they talking about 40 NPCs on screen in Reach? or just in the general combat environment like a Firefight map.

It also falls apart when you look at the Halo Wars designs, and that game takes place closer to the start of the war. ;)

Strictly speaking, there was no Halo Wars design - the CG inserts were created by Blur Studio and they've added their own touch to everything. Lots of comic books fans there, hence the beefing up.
They also had their own take on Spartan armor, the Warthog and all other things too.

Ensemble would have done storyboards and been responsible for the art direction.
They definitely did orginal designs for the game (which were used in cutscenes) like their fantastic brute chieftain hero unit design.

I don't think Blur can take the credit for the design work.

Take the Brute leader unit for example, it is very similar in style to the other Halo Wars designs and yet is an Ensemble design, not featured in any of the cutscenes.

Fair enough... I just assumed the Ensemble art director would have the final say on that (it's been said on a few occasions that Bungie wasn't involved with HW in any manner besides general Halo Universe canon).

And in my brain fart, I forgot about the Elite in the Reach video at the end, which is clearly more akin to the Halo 3 armour. :p

I figured some things might change in 20 years. Though I would like to point out that it was supposed to be the Mark IV suit which we hadn't seen before. :p

Yeah, you can always find fictional explanations and such, and also, Ensemble obviously had final approval on everything. I'm just going out from our own experience with Games Workshop when we've pretty much re-designed almost every character for our Warhammer stuff to better fit the more realistic look and tone, and they've OKed most of it.

(But they've said, and this is a direct quote, that "the Orc Warboss is too big, in reality they don't grow that large"... quickly became a running gag for months ;) )

Maybe it is just me, but I really like and prefer the Halo Wars designs. The CGIs were excellent in terms of atmosphere and design. I think the new Reach look appears quasi raptor+chicken

Yes, not a patch on the Halo Wars designs, now THOSE were menacing

I dunno, I would have to agree with interference and say the above are much more menacing. And while this looks bulky, it looks menacing, scary, brutal--and prepared for war.

The Reach designs look skinny, weak, and non-intimidating to me. They look funky (like a cross between a cat, chicken, and scare crow) and almost look like they are gonna slither away like a snake. Halo Wars had more of a Predator look which I liked.

On the other hand I like Bungie's Brute design.

Agreed. I remember when I first so the Halo Wars announce trailer and viewed the Elite reveal. It gave me goosebumps. The new design does appear to be more stealth like than the Halo Wars version though.

The Halo Wars version looks to bad ass to employ a stealth approach and looks more apt to just come in and crush their enemies and lament in their women.

One thing I have not heard a lot of talk about is the new assassination thing

I dislike games that purport to give you a "choice" how to play, stealth or guns blazing. Because I always feel like, I am not playing the "right" way.

So yeah, not thrilled about that I guess.

Would be interesting if they had 2 Elite models or 2 Elite armor variations with the one shown being the stealth/invis Elites and another more brutish frontline Elite. Doubtful, but could happen. :D

They might, given the armor variations of the grunts in the game.

Actually Bungie has concept art of a Elite officer and a normal Elite up

The officer design looks kind of silly though.

The Officier is significantly more "bulky" however. Compare the Elbows for instance for a good reference point without armor. Shoulder's also seem noticeably more muscular and massive as well biceps and legs.

If we were to have a sideview I'd venture to guess the chest cavity will also be large. Face also looks broader, although the normal looking off at an angle makes it difficult to tell.

Interestingly the upper leg armor plates look similar to the upper leg armor plates of the Halo Wars model. Which makes a bit of sense since the Elite most often featured in Halo Wars cinematics was a high officer.
