Halo: Reach

I'm actually liking the grunt & elite armour design more from Halo 3. :s Even the Grunt looks more menacing with the spiny arms and red eyes (though at least the Reach grunt has a spiny knee!). It's just the in-game personality they needed to adjust. The elite face is looking nice in Reach though. Hopefully it's just an armour variant issue because the intent of the armour design looks completely different here. It's a lighter armour for sure.

Would have been nice if they included wireframes to further show the differences. :p

Well, to be fair, the Reach armor designs should have been done with a goal of making them look slightly more primitive/crude versions of that in Halo 3. Although not a terribly big difference as the timeline between the Fall of Reach and Halo 3 isn't that long.

With that thinking you can easily see how the Reach elite armor appears slightly less powerful and advance compared to the Halo 3 armor.

The Grunts armor looks more bulky and crude compared to the Halo 3 armor, etc...

It's consistent at least if you go by that way of thinking.

Of course, then you get to the Marines and suddenly you have a model that arguably might be better equipped than the Halo 3 version.

The leg armour is what I think is making me pause about the Reach design. It just looks... like he's going to go on a stealth mission rather an assault. He just has no armour there.

It also falls apart when you look at the Halo Wars designs. ;) The elites looked like they were on steroids with scary faces. lol

Yes, not a patch on the Halo Wars designs, now THOSE were menacing

Heh, I give Halo Wars a bit of a pass since it wasn't done by Bungie. :)

I guess they wanted to make them look more mobile.

The Elites in Reach look like they've been taking HGH.Yeah, the Spartans are augmented humans with significantly stronger bone and muscle density along with a slew of other enchancements.Elites when standing completely straight are 8'6 but when slouched they're about 7'6..Grunts are 5"0, Jackals 5"8 and the Lekgola aka Hunters are over 10" feet tall..

We all feel you excitement for the game of course, but it might be best to see all this 40+ enemies with 20+ vehicles on screen in action first, before all the hand slapping gets thrown round the room. Saying and doing are different things. If they do it....great. if not...........well. Your comment is a little...PR`ish.

In theory I agree, but Halo 3 already had some pretty big enemy and vehicle counts, so it's not outlandish to think they won't be able to achieve their target, especially with their new LOD system.

I mentioned this before, ODST's Firefight mode is already pushing 30+ enemies on screen (that you can interact with too), so I don't see why Reach is such a big upgrade in terms of sheer unit count. (with the graphical upgrades it is, but not for sheer numbers)

Interesting, i play a lot of online gamplay most of the time, i haven't been much up to date on the specifics of each title. as of yet I'm trying to get into some of the books.

Amazon had the first 3 Halo novels on sale for $13 bucks so I decided to pick it up.The novels are intentionally written toward teens but it is definitely a fun and interesting read. When your done reading the novels you realize how big the Halo universe truly is...Anyways, what im eager to experience and see is the destruction of planet Reach itself.Since Bungie stated we're going to see Reach progressively get decimated over course of the campaign...

Oh yay, another graphics e-penis comparison thread. *yawn*

Ban warning of the three-month variety regarding making ePenis graphics comparisons* We can go back and forth on presenting bullshots and discussing an individual's logic. People just suddenly forgot about Vs. Threads. Apparently.

*At this point, it's rather asinine to compare it to finished or near-finished products. Why? I don't know, maybe it's because there's over 6 months until the game is asset & feature complete. The Beta will be a milestone certainly. But leave the Vs discussion to other forums. We do not need arguments only to finally have the same obvious conclusions: A) wait until the beta. B) It's unfinished. etc.

I've seen screenshots with 26 grunts. Other than that, there doesn't get to be any other instances with that many enemies on-screen, let alone variety - they're just grunts and a lot of times I've seen bunches of them with synchronized actions & animations. You can certainly have lots of things in the game world, but visibly? I've played a fair bit of Firefight, and I can't agree in any way with you unless you're talking about a screen full of one enemy type.

The question that remains is if Bungie is talking about having so many units with more variety in unit types and AI functions.

You haven't been in Firefight matches where they'll be like 12+ drones flying around, plus a dozen or so grunts and jackals (and jackal snipers) and a handful of brutes?

And I don't see why we can't compare assets like character models, they're likely not going to change in the next 6 months anyway. Some people seem to think the whole game will go from looking above average to stellar in 6 months, what other example do we have of such a graphical upgrade compared to pre-release shots.
Hell the final Halo 3 release was worse looking than some of the prerelease shots, E3 06 for example.

If they're behind walls or off screen, it doesn't count because they're not being rendered.

I've been in battles with lots of enemies attacking, way more than 40 on the entire battle field. Have I seen them all at once in the same area? Not at all. The bugs are a tricky thing too because they're flying on and off-screen. I've seen at most maybe 3 or 4 groupings of Brute + grunts or packs of brutes on the level with the brute chopper. Any other level has too many occluders or let alone the space for 20+ entities to show up on the screen.
