Halflife 2- first screenshot

Captain,

Kind of odd to spare resources to porting an unfinished game, when you are struggling to finish two games.

Who says they are "struggling"?

Posted on IGN.

Valve's own Doug Lombardi told a German Xbox magazine, AreaXbox: "Yes, we're also working on an Xbox version, though not releasing any specific details on that until after E3."

Though I love FPSs....I didnt like HL for one reason...I felt dizzyness while playing it becse of sliding sort of running....

deepak explain that dont make any sense? I am interested you are the first person I have heard who likes fps and didn't like HL.

In HL....either the lab's floor is built of marbles or your lead character is wearing metal boots becse he slides a lot.....so after playing a while I felt uncomfortable....so I stopped playing!!!

Well, it has the exact same physics as Quake 1, which was one of the reasons I liked it (fast, air control, heck you can even bunny jump for extra speed).

Cheers
Gubbi

call me a freak but i love FPS's but i'm not so keen on Half Life

I liked Half-Life a lot because of its balance. It had enough gameplay, graphics, and story in the right amount. There was nothing too extreme about Half-Life. If you didn't like the puzzle jumping, it didn't matter because it wasn't overdone. If you wanted more than just run and shoot, you had the story unfold as you passed levels.

I'm really curious where Team Fortress 2 fits into all of this. If they include that in with Half-Life 2, that would be over the top cool, but I wouldn't be surprised if they sell TF 2 seperatley. I liked HL TF a lot, HL2 TF2 would probably be smoking also.

More screens, these cleaner:

looks fantastic to me... especially the outdoor picture.... and the one in what seems like a prison... pretty water effects are soooooo last year  j/k

Those new screens seem to indicate the engine is fairly simple in terms of what it's doing. They're pushing quite a lot of polygons, probably a fair bit less than UT2k3 and U 2, however. And they're getting as much fill rate as possible to push a lot of high res textures.

Then who ever is handling the art direction and level design is doing an AMAZING job with wha they have available.

Everytime someone mentions Unreal 2 in a thread about good graphics I got to giggle somehow. Granted, U2 (the game, not the band) pushes a buttload of polygons, maybe more than HL2, but HOW they used them is a different story. Lets just say the game had me extremely unimpressed graphically (and the gameply wasn't too great either), whereas every new HL2 screenie impresses me more and more.

But you are right, the HL2 engine doesn't seem to do anything too mind bogglingly original beyond making clever use of techs readily available. By the looks they seem to be using today's resources very effectively and impressively though. I like everything about the game so far, it came as a total surprise, and everything I've seen and read to date sounds pretty exciting. No years of teasing with screenshots and promises or anything like it, just a sudden - BOOM, here we are, like it or not we're gonna rock your world ... again! Gotta admire that attitude... :)

Er... granted, I haven't played either but I've yet to see a screen from those games with environments as detailed as these. Effects are also considerably better in HL2, especially lighting.

Look at those environments carefully. It shows a LOT of careful use of the polygons, textures, alpha textures and bump mapping.

I always have to think of Starship troopers or starcraft when I see the screens... They could be a little more original on that point ;)

argh comparing a Half-life with the worst film in the universe... SHOCK HORROR

mmhhh StarCraft... that makes me think about StarCraft : Ghost :) Not really similar to those screens.

(everything obviously IMO)

Those HL2 shots look excellent. I'm just afraid of what the framerate would be on my current machine. :)

I'm upgrading soon though, so it might not run too slowly..

Surely there are movies worse than Starship Troopers. I can think of a few (a few dozen that is)
