GT4 - VW race driving sim

German automaker Volkswagen has signed Polyphony Digital, creators of the famed Gran Turismo racing game series, to create a driving simulation for its professional drivers. Specifically, Volkswagen hopes to improve its team's performance in this year's "GTI Club" racing series by having the drivers train utilizing the simulation. More importantly perhaps, developing the simulation is said to be much more cost effective than actual on-location testing.

According to Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi, the Volkswagen simulation will run on the PlayStation 2 but won't be offered for sale to the general public. Speaking about the project today, Yamauchi-san revealed, "The accuracy of the simulation as it related to realistic track times has gone up significantly. Players need significant skill and practice in order to improve. The Volkswagen training simulation also represents aspects of our research currently underway for the development of Gran Turismo 4. Since the Volkswagen project is strictly a simulation only the steering wheel peripheral is used." Volkswagen reportedly plans to display the training simulation to the public at upcoming GTI Club circuit races.

Sounds like the GT4 physics will kick some major asses. :D

Now if only SEGA would make a nice driving game based on their real driving simulator that has been available to institutions in Japan.

So you and McFly are one and the same? Unless you announced it to the world, no one here even knew. If you are the same person, why the hell do you have two accounts? Is it for trolling or flooding?

huh? what u on about?

I hope you realize that you still haven't contributed anything useful to this thread ;)

If there was a word to describe a trolling hippocrate...it would have you in its definition

and i'm sorry to say that between u and me, PC-engine, the one who can be considered more of a troll-fanb0y is u... i'm not the one checking the name of the platform before deciding whether i like a game or not... no hard feelings... i'm just speaking my mind, if u don't like it then its ur problem

Oh and somehow you have proof?

You truly need to get a life man or a new hobby ;)

You still haven't contributed anything useful man...offer SOMETHING.

I don't blame you

At least it's somewhat related to the topic, more than can be said of your posts ;)

blah blah blah whatever mate... so why don't u enlighten us with your knowledge then..... come on... tell us about this thing Sega has... im serious im curious now

SEGA created a driving simulator that's used in driving schools in Japan. It's an industrial unit and not an arcade game or available to arcades.

I guess they don't have the intention of making a game out of it because a *Simulation* is not really a sega-thing.... u know what i mean... i mean, i got bored with GT3 after playing it to death... so much so that it makes me sick even thinking about it now...

(obviously directed at PC-Engine and LondonBoy)

You two are incredible. Not taking anyones side here, but both of you should really give it a break. Not only are you flodding this thread with nonesense, but have also ruined this thread. Great job.

That's great news. I have high hopes for GT4 and the new engine. It would be nice to see them implement damage and more intense use of weather effects making it even more challenging and realistic. Hopefully, this is good indication that the series will be moving even more in the direction of true simulation.

On a different note; Evolution Studio's WRX2:Extreme achieved something quite similar. Due to their extensive research and amazing engine based, some Rally makers apparently use it for testing. A shame though that the full heavy version of that engine wasn't used for the game - apparently, it was way too realistic and not fun anymore, so they had to cut it down and make it more playable and accessible for players.

I love WRC2, finished Argentina yesterday ... and yes in pro-mode it is quite a challange, even in this cut-down engine version. Gravel, rain, snow, ice, uphill, downhill ... every detail effects the physics engine. Rest is top notch too, car models are high poly (20.000-30.000), insane draw of distance, etc etc.

I posted some screenshots here:

Enough OT ... back to GT

The problem I have with WRC is that the cars are not heavy enough and I always had the impression that there was something else wrong with the physics. Anyway, the graphics are very cool.

I really hope that GT4 will go even more the simulation way. I raced nearly once around the planet in GT3 and if GT4 will be just a bit more of everything (GFX, Physics, AI), then I sure will make the "in 80 days around the world" thing this time. ;)
