GPU Ray Tracing Performance Comparisons [2021-2022]

I can only assume the PC version is using the same RT implementation as the consoles which is obviously ultra optimised for RDNA2/3 and basically broken on Nvidia.
 
But DXR is a blackbox. This would mean that they havent even ported the traversal part to DXR or using flags to disable the hardware acceleration part of the API.
 
Looks like the XTX is even faster than the 4090 in Gotham Knights with RT. Looks like CPU limitations are definitely in play there though.
 
Yes, Gotham Knight is CPU limited on nVidia hardware.

Final Ray Tracing numbers for RDNA3 vs Ampere and Ada at 4K max settings, in summary, the 4080 has a massive lead over the 7900XTX in path traced games, and heavy RT titles, but other games show a typical 25% to 35% lead over the 7900XTX. The 4090 is so far ahead though, it's basically the story of 3090Ti vs 6950XT all over again. As for the 3090Ti, has a a typical of 5% to 10% lead in lighter ray traced games, extended to about 40% to 50% lead in heavy RT and path tracing titles.

in 3DMark Path Tracing test, the 7900XTX matches the 3080 10GB/12GB, which surprisingly the thing that happens in Portal RTX too.

Digital foundry show only 20% difference between 7900\4080 in DL2
Their test was at the start of the game, It gets heavier in places once you get to the 2nd open world area with more reflections from the building windows and brushed metal . If they tested there instead of the start the gap could widen as the RT work load increases. That 2nd area with all RT on gets heavier in places than cyberpunks from my experience. If they tested the same place then I got no idea.

Oh so it seems the heavier the RT, more RDNA3 is taking a hit. I say that because in the previous round of review, rdna3 was showing a level around 3090/3090ti in RT, sometimes a little above. But when things get serious it seems it reversed ?

Well, AMD only sees around a 35% boost in rasterisation on average at 4K vs the 6950 XT, while even in Quake 2 RTX they are getting a 52% boost. There are also some "heavy" RT titles that see bigger boosts, like the 70% boost in Dying Light 2 or the 67% boost in Lego Builder's Journey. So I think the gap has closed; it's just that they were really far behind before. With slightly higher clocks the 7900 XTX would look more attractive because it would be able to pass the 3090 Ti in many more titles.

There did seem to be a some difference in overall RT performance depending whether a review used "High" or "Ultra" settings.

Closed? In Lego the 3090TI is 66% faster than the 6950XT, while the 4090 is 85% faster than the 7900XTX. The gap has grown larger...

I was talking about the gap between rasterisation performance and RT performance. The 7900 XTX is far behind the 4090 in rasterisation performance so no one expects it to compete in RT.
 
The 4090 has more improved over the 6950XT in rasterizing, too. Relativ has the 4090 an improved 1,42x increase between raytracing <> rasterizing while the 7900XTX sits at 1,1x.
You can use Computerbase's numbers:
6950XT <> 4090 -> 1,81x faster in rasterizing and 2,57x faster in raytracing => 1,42x
6950XT <> 7900XTX -> 1,35x faster in rasterizing and 1,48x faster in raytracing => 1,10x
 
I can see Intel pushing AMD in to 3rd place at this rate.

AMD just seem so inconsistent with their GPU's and architectures and Intel's issues are all software related which won't last forever as their GPU architecture actually seems good and their RT implementation is strong.

Intel are large enough to dump the kind of money in to GPU architecture development that AMD could only dream of.

I was truly hoping RDNA3 would be their next RV770 moment.
