People have heaped praise on this game, but to me it seems like just another button-masher. Ok, so the graphics look good for a PS2, jagged and crawly as they are (though that is really standard fare on this console).
Granted - I have only reached the first big boss so far and thus not seen much of the game, but I have already encountered many "pit of doom" type situations where if I fall into the ocean I die despite the character CAN swim, and the "kick the breakable box" was also really REALLY fun...not. Oh, and I just really REALLY love bosses that regen their health fully periodically when I fail to perform that one particular button press or special move that kills them.
Geez, I don't understand what's up with all these game designers solely out to frustrate the hell out of the player on purpose with instadeaths coupled with dumb camera angles, random fire destroying the object I am manipulating etc. It's stuff that should have gone out of fashion ten years ago, yet many seem to think this crap is just what people like. Wtf?
Prince of persia, jak & dakster, and now god of war. I'm sure there are others as well. Devil may cry is similar to GOW gameplay wise, but without the idiotic frustration issues - or at least the original DMC was. I haven't played #2 or 3 yet, despite I bought #3 months ago now. Just haven't gotten around to - I blame that on WoW.
Will have to play this sucker more before I decide if I'm to not like it or not. Right now I'm sort of just thinking it's an OK title, something to waste time with for a while, though the long distance between save points makes it difficult to comprehend how exactly one is supposed to just pick this game up and go at it for a while. I hope one doesn't have to play through an entire level before reaching a save point throughout the rest of the game.
