God of war - what's the big deal?

People have heaped praise on this game, but to me it seems like just another button-masher. Ok, so the graphics look good for a PS2, jagged and crawly as they are (though that is really standard fare on this console).

Granted - I have only reached the first big boss so far and thus not seen much of the game, but I have already encountered many "pit of doom" type situations where if I fall into the ocean I die despite the character CAN swim, and the "kick the breakable box" was also really REALLY fun...not. Oh, and I just really REALLY love bosses that regen their health fully periodically when I fail to perform that one particular button press or special move that kills them. :D

Geez, I don't understand what's up with all these game designers solely out to frustrate the hell out of the player on purpose with instadeaths coupled with dumb camera angles, random fire destroying the object I am manipulating etc. It's stuff that should have gone out of fashion ten years ago, yet many seem to think this crap is just what people like. Wtf?

Prince of persia, jak & dakster, and now god of war. I'm sure there are others as well. Devil may cry is similar to GOW gameplay wise, but without the idiotic frustration issues - or at least the original DMC was. I haven't played #2 or 3 yet, despite I bought #3 months ago now. Just haven't gotten around to - I blame that on WoW.

Will have to play this sucker more before I decide if I'm to not like it or not. Right now I'm sort of just thinking it's an OK title, something to waste time with for a while, though the long distance between save points makes it difficult to comprehend how exactly one is supposed to just pick this game up and go at it for a while. I hope one doesn't have to play through an entire level before reaching a save point throughout the rest of the game.

Quit bitchin Guden! and Keep playing!

The gameplay is dramatic and inclusive you do get th esense of "pressure" to accomplish and also magnitude. Everything is just HUGE. I consider GoW a prelude to Shadow of the Colossus.

It is what it is! Enjoy!

At which difficulty level are you playing? I had no trouble going through this Game, apart from a few Boss-Battles and the (agonizing) deathrap-jumping parts at the end of the game. And I DID went to the end of the game in just 2 Sessions, been quite some time since a Game captured me like that.

I agree that the game was over hyped . I was playing through it (about half way through ) and its just not keeping my intrest to me its a hack and slasher thats really missing the important thigns , like tons of boss battles . What they do have in terms of boss battles are cool. However there are only 3 or 4 i believe and the lvls are pretty uninspired

The game is whatever you want, but the overall level design is anything but uninspired.

The only donwside I could find in GoW is probably its shallow fight system, which is too keen on letting the player just mash the buttons to perform combos. Other than that, it's one of the best action game of this generation.

I thought God of War was a lot of fun -- the fighting system was one of my favorite parts. It felt smooth and it was easy to chain things; the flow of it was very natural (as natural as swinging two swords linked to your wrists by chains can be). The different levels of the game were well done -- there was a lot of different areas that were unique. The boss fights were also well done (I also wish there was more of them) -- fewer good boss fights always beats several boring ones (big monster with lots of hp pretending to be a boss). The story was entertaining enough and was well thought out (if not a little cheesy) and had a fleshed out backstory to make another game upon (a few videos get unlocked if you beat it on the hardest difficulty). I think the best part of it was it was one of the more polished examples of the genre -- it did everything well (the arguable annoyances of falling from the beams is moot -- the beams are pretty wide -- you'd have to be drunk to fall off them). Granted there was a few areas that were a pain -- most notably a few rooms on the highest difficulty in the pandora's temple. The game was a push over on its normal difficulty.

Some like it, some don't. Ninja Gaiden was similar genre and was also well done -- there are a few differences of course, which make the debate of which is a better game sort of difficult.

Over hyped please you got to be kidding me. Thats why it won so many Gphoia awards. Remember you might not have like the show, but the awards were chosen by the gamers. I don't really care for Halo, but never in my entire life would I say that its over hyped. It seems like a great game.

Give credit where credit due. Please.

I would . The game sucked though .

gphoria crowd also though the skits on the show were funny ..... Did u see the crappy chocolate milk skit ? Or those stupid breakable bottles ?

I really don't care for g4 tv . I really liked tech tv though . It seems to me that the channel is catering to the 14 year old gamer market . They put hot girls (i don't mind to much) that don't play games on thier shows and then use 8th grade bathroom humor to try and get an audiance. I really only watch that legends show where they talk about a creators acomplishments

yeah techtv was way better cause they talked about much more tech than just videogames...

I have to agree here, that the game just didn't hold my interest beyond 2 brief sittings. I specifically rented it out of curiousity after it was talked up here at these forums. The graphics weren't bad, but just "aight", imo. The graphics just didn't engage me, in a way that is hard to put into words ("simplistic" is the closest word I get, but I can't say that fully describes it). The gameplay really didn't get beyond "button mashing" for me. I guess this game might be one of those "love it or hate it" kind of things. It's entirely possible my gaming interests have shifted in recent times (enough to have shifted away from this kind of game, perhaps). However, that wouldn't explain how can I be quite gleefully entertained with those LoTR games, which aren't that far removed from buttonmashing-fests, either.

I have one word to describe 99% of all Nintendo games.....cheezy. And two words....Over done.

I know you weren't talking about God of War were you? I'm starting to think you haven't even played the damn game.:-?

Me and an old pal from my highschool days played the game a bit further, into the next level, and it became rather hard all of a sudden with the bigass monsters with their giant maces and such... The medusa was nuts too. Don't really like instakill attacks like that. :?

I think I will restart and practice the basic moves more on the easy initial enemies and try to pump more red orbs out of them to try and get my basic attack upgraded sooner.

Yes i have and I didn't like it .

However your post is starting to make me think you've never played a nintendo game

What's the point of fighting over what someone does or does not like?

So jvd didn't like the game. Big deal! Mckmas did. Big deal!
