God of war - what's the big deal?

the game is ok, i wouldnt say its great...the most annoying thing about the game is those damn balance beams and those "i get what im supposed to do so let me go on already" puzzles where the only thing stopping you is your timing (pretty much every puzzle in GoW is like that now that i think about it)

i thought the game was a bit easy though, on normal mode at least

I just had the chance to play it at a friends place yesterday. I played from the start to the Pandora`s temple level. Yes it was easy, but I like games that way to keep my attention.
I thought the part where you have to find and kill the sirens was pretty cool.

Agreed. Kicking the box over to the other end of the ship only to have the enemies shoot it to pieces again and again quickly got very old hat. First time I ran over to the far end, didn't see the box at all, and tried to jump up to the top and failed.

Then, after trying various tricks to get up there anyway (metroid/SMB64-style wall jumping doesn't work, heh!), I went back to the far end and then saw the box. I then spent five or so tries to deliver the damn thing before arrows destroyed it, only to return and see a new box having magically appeared where the old one was. That's bogus game design if ever I saw it. Make a task for the player, that's cool. Making the task tedious and repetitive is uncool.

But slashing enemies is pretty fun, so I'll give the game another go just to check it out some more. If I become more at ease with the controls I guess my enjoyment will increase as well.

So jvd didn't like the game. Big deal! Mckmas did. Big deal!

Agreed but jvd said the game sucked. That's a bit far if you ask me. That's like saying HL2, Halo, or GTA3 sucks. It comes a point when a game is just not for you. That doesn't mean it sucks though.

Yet you had no problem saying:

I have one word to describe 99% of all Nintendo games.....cheezy. And two words....Over done.

See, this is the problem with the console forum. If someone says something negative about a console/game they like they get upset, yet they have no problem being doubly negative against the competition.

I still remember some of my first threads... I was critical of Madden (one of my all time fav franchises) and people reacted as if I was some anti-Madden fan (the 3 copies from the last 3 years say otherwise).

Btw, when you diss Nintendo games as "cheesy" and "over" you are bashing, just from the GCN generation, some really really good games (either 9s or 8s on a 10 point scale from the major sites):

Super Smash Brothers Melee
Metroid Prime
Metroid Prime 2 Echos
Pikmin
Pikmin 2
Zelda: Wind Waker
Zelda: OoT Remake
Zelda (the new adult one!)
Super Mario Sunshine
Mario Kart
Mario Tennis
Mario Gold
Wave Race
Animal Crossing
Paper Mario

If you throw in 2nd party stuff (like ED, SFA, F-Zero GX) or exclusives (like SCII w/ Link, Star Wars RS2, PSO 1&11, RE4) and I think it is REALLY clear what you have said about Nintendo is not only unfair, but degrees worse than JVD disliking one game.

JVD disliked a game.

You slammed 99% of Nintendo products which includes, over the decades, hundreds of the best games of all time. While you may dislike Nintendo software, 1st party sales and reviewers in general disagree.

As for "over done" I think that is really unfair. Ridge Racer 6? Resident Evil 5? GTA:4? MGS:4? Tekken 6? GT5? Devil Mary Cry 4?

Successful companies leverage their successful IPs, and consumers who enjoy a franchise, like Zelda or MGS, rarely get enough of what they want.

If Nintendo games are "over done" then that equally applies to what Sony and to a degree what MS are promising. Yet I have not heard you complain about a Killzone sequal or the above names sequals.

So how is Nintendo overdone and not many of the PS exclusives?

(Of course in my opinion more of a good thing that gamers want is a good thing.)

Personaly i like the hack and slash genre. I just did not like gow at all. It was very uninspired. The boss battles were cool but 3 bosses doesn't make a game

See this is critisim that is fair. Saying the good sucked is not.

Look I agree I was just mad and should have said that. I don't even believe what I said myself. A lot of Nintendo games aren't cheezy. I was responding to PC-Engine, which I should known better not to do. He said GOW was cheezy with a wink face.

I should have been the bigger man and not responded in a stupid way. Again my fault. But I like the new way that jvd is giving us his dislike for the game. Better way of saying it. But I do have to say that it has received 9's and above from many, many, many people and should be respected for that.

I thought the game was pretty decent. People who consider this game just a button masher though should really try and work with their techniques. I thought it had a rather robust offering to button mashing all things considered. (although a button masher it is)

The Fiery Menataur (sp) boss battle was actually one of the better boss battles I have played. I did have an issue with the camera though and for a game that I believe was in development for almost 4-5yrs should of had a better camera. The graphics are up there with the best ive seen done on ps2. I remember playing this at the E3 before it was released and boy talk about camera, combat control issues shesh. Glad they at least took the feedback and made it better then that otherwise this game would of been a disaster. I would rank the game about an 8.5.

I do think its a solid start for the franchise. Think God of War 2 or whatever on the PS3 wooot. I believe his brother will be his adversary in the next game or at least thats what I got out of some of the additional content on the disk.

Now we will see how long it takes for Hollywood to make a movie out of the game lol

I find the combos in this game more or less useless. I have a whole bunch of moves at my disposal, but when simply pounding square a couple times and then triangle gets the job done why should I bother trying to do any fancy-pants hermes launch whatever stuff? The game's chaotic enough as it is when multiple enemies attack, and when some enemies can't be grabbed, some attacks can't be blocked and so on, it just turns into button mashing.

If the game had a slower pace with stronger enemies appearing one or two at a time it would have meant I'd have more use for the extraspecial combo moves, but right now the safest bet is to spin the stick around whilst hammering square to try and keep the enemies away from me/stunned.

This is a rather missed opportunity, IMO.

Are you playing on Normal?
If so then you should have tried to play on HARD. (I play all games on hard from the beginning now since "normal" modes are waaaaayyyy to easy now-a-days)
I found a lot of combos useful in many different situations...some get rid of the enemies faster and have more impact and ohhh...later on in the game when you go to hades you will prob use a certain combo over others....dont want to give any spoilers. That part was hard though. At least on hard mode.
