Hi all,
As you may have noticed the "predict the next generation thread" has turned more into a discussion than a place to make "bets".
As we are closing in and as I would expect leaks to intensify after this fall it's the perfect time now for anyone to make his bet.
I would want the thread to make it easy for any one to track one bet be it is own, so I will set rules before hands. I or anybody for that purpose should report offenders (free post discussion), or in a may more civil and sympathetic Pm them and ask them for deletion.
The rules are as follow:
1) this thread is about Sony and MSFT next system. Nintendo system is too close to release betting ain't funny.
2) no explanation. I will make some sort of form people can copy/paste in their posts. Things has to be clear and pretty standardized. Use the form.
3) people are allowed 2 posts (one per system), do separate posts.
4) Post edition is not allowed. Edited posts are going to be discarded. Post deletion is not allowed (play fair).
5) If one wants to discuss one's post link the post the "other prediction thread" and discuss there.
6) the thread should be close after a given time: end of September sounds right (disputable but not here).
7) I've an extra post.
8) this post may be edited.
9) the following acronyms are forbidden: MFLOPS/GFLOPS/TFLOPS many thanks in advance.
10) follow the rules
-----------------
Overall system description
Brand: Msft or Sony
number of chips in the system: X
Type: (the main chips, forget south bridge and the like) SOC? CPU? GPU?
Memory layout: I mean UMA? or UMA plus daughter die a la xenon, fast scratch pad memory on the GPU, interposer, bus(es) width, etc.. Explain as shortly and clearly as possible how you expect the different chips to connect to each others and with the memory pool(s).
Amount of memory and types: self explanatory
Mass storage solution: self explanatory.
Number of SKUs and brief description:
Price(s):
NB I pass on optic drive as BRD is a given.
Details:
CPU provider: (I expect a brand here)
Which architecture and ISA: (custom, Jaguar, A15, etc.)
Number of cores: X
Clock speed: Ballpark figure. I set the spread +/-100MHz so answer like: 2.5GHz should be read in between 2.4 and 2.6 ( if you think for example 3.2GHz is the max clock speed go for 3.1GHz)
(NB I pass on cache size, SIMD size)
GPU provider: brand
Number of SIMD: I expect here a number of CUs for AMD and a number SMX for Nvidia.
Answer should read as such:
For AMD X-1/X/X-1. For Nvidia X. So you write 15CUs that means in between 14 and 16 CUs.
(I've give no spread for Nv because there are less granularity in theirs GPUs, a SMX contains more or less x3 the numbers of ALUs as a CU hence the spread).
Number of ROPs: (usually there is less granularity here than for the SIMD) so not spread.
Clock speed: xxx MHz spread is +/-50MHz
Important Notice about arbitration: some parts of the form have spread built in, in case of equality if ones were to predict properly within the ranges allowed, the winners will be the one(s) that had the correct value as its best case scenario. For example If for one is best bet for the cpu speed is 3.2GHz he would have answered 3.1GHz. Same for the CU count, if ones best guess is 18 for example bet 17. I arbitrarily choose so because I assume that the upper range of the spread is actually one's most wanted value.
Here is the condensed and clean form:
