gears of war new vid > IGN

Hmm, doesn't seem right to me though. It looks like a mixture of cut scenes and game play.

When the big monster/t-rex thing comes out there some cool self shadowing and lighting.

But in the following scene, when the player character is running around and firing to the right, he casts no self shadows nor any shadows on the ground.

Maybe its just me.

My suggestion to Epic:

Whoever it was who did the two monster scenes (The large one shaking its head; the T-Rex... you can also add the first monster crashing through the wall at E3) has a GREAT feel for drama, action, setting, and just simply "gets it".

Dedicate that person to your demo reels and to jazz up the game. Obviously Bizarre figures a way to do a nice first person (cabin) shaky cam--surely this could be done well in a FPS as well. Cinematic. The GOW scenes, as short as they are, that demonstrate great cinematics really show how bland some of the gameplay and other demo shots are.

Just my opinion of course. The 3rd person deal is a caution sign for me (not because it makes a game bad, just not my taste, that is all). If they want to pique my interest they need to demonstrate the quality of their Cutscenes and Monster shots carries over to the gameplay. IMO if it does not what is the point of having a 3rd person view to begin with? Yeah you can do some cover, but having a large guy on my screen who is BORING well, meh.

Just a suggestion. Seeing as PGR3 held out on its secret camera angle and such, maybe Epic is waiting to pull out the big guns closer to launch. Here is hoping the titles lives up to the Graphics' static visuals.

I don't see how you can make any judgment at all on the gameplay, all we saw was combat.

It looked fast paced and hectic to me, and certainly not bland. And I'm not sure how you can judge the story elements of the game, or call the gameplay 'bland' when we've only seen combat cut-scenes and the beginning level of the game (which has excellent dramatic feel BTW).

Yes there is no shadows in that scene, also gun fire provides no lighting to hands or body. But in other scenes it has some of these things so maybe they mixed old video with new video. Best consistent feature is normal mapping.

::shrugs:: It is a shooter, combat is the majority of the gameplay. I have seen the extended gameplay sequences. Seems pretty straight forward to me. Most shooters and stealth games are bland to me -- same gameplay format respun over and over again. Some games add new fun elements (liked HL2s acting, physics puzzles, story). Unless they are adding something new OR really refine the gameplay I would consider it bland. Not that that is bad--bland gameplay (i.e. generic, like everything else) + a good story + good graphics = good game. But then it is a matter of like the story or not and less about the gameplay.

It looked fast paced and hectic to me, and certainly not bland.
Your opinion of course ;) I have a large library of games where stuff can shoot at me and be hectic.

::Yawn::

What is it offering that is new? What gameplay elements that are not a gimmik?

Like I said, the parts that excited me were when the T-Rex dude with the big cannon on his back comes crashing in and makes the ground rumble. SCARY!! Or when the Mother-Monster busts through the wall--whoa dude! RUN!

Blow those puppies up!

Taking cover behind a wall shooting at some ugly bipeds with guns?? Over the shoulder, no look, no less? That I consider bland. Chasing a car down a hill? Bland.

All I am saying is GOW has some really GREAT scenes. I want them to make the rest of the game match that.

In game development that is how a game gets better: Honest criticism of your own product and keeping the good, tossing out the bad. If all devs were complacent with the same gamestyle and mechanics all FPS would still be freaking Doom! Find locked door, find key, open locked door, kill boss; wash-rinse-repeat--and in the process just shoot anything that moves. Those can be fun--but they are also bland.

Those titles need to rely on killer graphics, great story, cool guns and explositions, etc... They are not necessarily bad games.

But I have a mountain of FPS. I am ready for something next gen. Just like PGR3 introduced the sweeeeeeeeet Cabin Camera. I am tired of Xbox/PS2 games. I want more now.

And I'm not sure how you can judge the story elements of the game, or call the gameplay 'bland' when we've only seen combat cut-scenes and the beginning level of the game (which has excellent dramatic feel BTW).
I was not necessarily picking on the story elements.

And I disagree. I think the opening level where they are following down the car is boring looking. The flame effects are lame, the over the top "shoot behind the back and ove the shoulder" stuff is just BORING. How is that tactical?!

Nothing kills drama more than cheesy gameplay. Why should I fear a 5 story tall T-Rex when I can hot enemies at 50 yards without even looking?

The game may interest you. But everyone has different tastes--and I feel comfortable sharing mine ;) I am sure some disagree and others agree.

And like I said in the first post--I hope to see it evolve and deliver what they have promised. Cliffy has made some HUGE promises in his dev intereviews. He is a good guy. So far what he has shown has not lived up to the hype that I am hearing. BUT, he most likely is holding a ton back. I can understand that.

But I think giving an opinion on the little we have seen is fair. Its not a game review... just opinions on what has been disclosed. Unlike others I am more interested in the gameplay of games. I wont hold back on a game just because it looks good...

GOW is a hard sell for me because I love the story and backdrop, the art is phenominal, but not so much sold on the over the shoulder junk or the 3rd person view.

I want to be sold on this title. That is all I am asking. So far they have not released anything that sells me. Not at all. I am glad if they have sold you though :D

I dunno, I thought the opening scene is pretty cool, despite the crappy flames/car

You're stuck alone, after dark withjust you and your buddy, somehow you have to make it to safety, without stepping foot in the dark, lest the locusts swarm all over you. So they slowly make their way to safety...it works for me!

I'm not a big Shooter fan at all, but this game finally seems to be one that DOES have an amazing storytelling feel to it, we'll wait and see but I'm gonna stay optimistic on this one.

btw: I love 3rd person shooters, much much much better to actually see the character IMO, adds tons of 'coolness' to a game, when I found out you could switch to 3rd person view in Oblivion I was pumped. FPS feel extremely fake to me, especially when performing actions or climbing things, and the 2 gun-stick-arms that stick straight out look dumb, but to each their own I guess.

Actually, I find myself replaying halo pc with a mod that lets you change to third person as well as adjust the view angle. I'm sorta liking the over the shoulder view. :D

I like the story a lot. That is not my problem ;)

I think this would jazz the beginning: When those pirhanna bats come arround, one of your mates should get eaten alive in a Cinematic scene. That should 1.) EXPLAIN the danger without saying "Hey, lets stay in the light" and 2.) The engine is sweet, so showing off a killer cinema sequence like that would look cool.

Oh well, like I said, 6-12 months. There is a LOT of time left on this one. My long held belief since E3 is this will slip to Fall 2006 and Halo 3 will slip to fall 2007--conveniently in time to be released alongside the new Peter Jackson movie ;)

2007 is the big sales year IMO. This is the rush release year, next yearn is the "lets build a base and release titles that test out the new platforms" and 2007 is when the big guns come "We know the hardware, we have fiddled with gameplay mechanics--now lets show what these systems can do!"

ToCa Edit :D

http://toca.game-editing.net/files

It only works for up to 1.06. Instructions are included. I originally was looking for a way to adjust the FOV because I have a widescreen display, and this prog just happened to have a toggle for third person. :D It's pretty nice! I always loved how you could read the counter on the assault rifle as it would be updated in realtime in 3rd person view.

So I can adjust the FOV for my widescreen too?

Dayum! thx dude

No problem. You have to adjust the FOV manually, but it is pretty decent. I use the end of the assault rifle as a guide as to how far I should go. :)
