The only impressive thing, are these particles effects.

The artwork is reminiscent of that Lucasart game Grim Fandago(sp?).

If no name developer can get this kind of stuff done, in less than half a year, maybe future looks bright for PSP.

I would say the quality seems to fall between the n64 and the dreamcast. Not quite as good as the first gen dc games but very impressive for a handheld.

However, it looks better than any early PS2 title, the platformers type anyway

On Dreamcast there was Sonic Adventure, which looks better than this thing, but on PS2, I don't remember any good looking platformer, until Rayman 2. But the particles effects, is definitely something above what Dreamcast ever offered.

Aren't those just transparencies?

Yep, there are some pretty big tools in the works for PS3 alright. Not the least of which is something "cool". Right now the industry buzzword is "ragdoll" but if one RnD project comes to fruition, it'll blow that out of the water. Archie might know what I'm referring to (not sure if the code word for it is widely known).

Have you seen the video? The game is chockful of nifty particle effects. Which happen to be semi-transparent as well :)

Whomever posted the initial pictures should edit them out and replace them with a link to the video - it looks that much nicer.

I almost forgot to ask.

Is this running on final silicon or on the emulator ?

Yes, particles can be transparent.

It seems to have better shadow than FF12 too , I wonder if they'll use shadow volume or some sort, in the final game.

Emulator, I think. Silicon is not ready yet, and by SCEA's spokeman, it should be during this summer.

Most definitely. Nice projected shadows, maybe even softened, versus circular shadows in FFXII :p Pixel pipeline in PSP apparently allows for stencil volumes, so even better shadows should be possible.

I ran through the video again .

A few things. There doesn't apear to be any fsaa which i'm kinda disapointed in. since the res is so much lower than ntsc i was hopping for at least 2x fsaa or even 4xfsaa but i guess there might be to much strain on the fillrate ?

Also is it the video or did the game stutter once

The stuff is running on emulators jvd, and I would not be at all surprised if the video itself was pre-recorded for the presentation - rumours have it that emulators currently run at low framerates.

oohhhh my bad i thought it was on actual hardware

Aren't they supposed to be launching soon (with in the next 6 months ) in japan ? shouldn't they have hardware by now ?

The actual launch date is November/December (in japan!).

And no actual silicon.

to stay almost on topic, does anybody know if the PSP is able of some kind of pixel shader (or at least complex operations)?

And for this first game demo the polycount seems quite low, but the combination of "no final silicon + No name dev" should anwser the question ( at least for the moment until futher elemets)

I'm kinda puzzled as to why they showed a game like Death Jr. to demonstrate PSP capabilities... :? I guess they're waiting for E3 to show the big name franchises?

wow, I must admit, after just seeing the video, I must say I am quite impressed for starters. Nice particles and animation I must say. I can't wait to see more games and how they shape up. This might be the first handheld since the Gameboy I'll be picking up...

Damn I'd like to see something like Zone of The Enders running on PSP. Wasn't that PSP demo some early build of a new RPG, like Arc the Lad?

Just watched the Death Jr video and I'm not impressed. I mean it looks ok, but PSP is going to cost at least $250.. should that video really impress us from a $250 device? I'm not condeming PSP or anything, I'm just suprised that people aren't disapointed with that first showing considering the hype and the price of PSP.

Are people here impressed with the game, or the PSP capabilities? That's a question that may be tough to answer wihtout knowing more about the platform

What *do* you expect for $250? Have you seen the price of most other portable hardware? You surely can't be comparing it to the performance of a full console?

Also, AFAIK this video isn't running on anything like a final bit of hardware, but on an emulator using early libs, which may or may not be pushed anywhere as hard as the final thing.

For $250 I expect more then N64 visuals with some nice particle effects. I'm not saying that I think PSP won't be able to do considerably better then that. But at the same time I'm not going to just assume that it will, I don't know enough about it for that. So I'm just looking at what Sony are showing me and what I'm saying is at this stage I'm not impressed.

BTW what other portable hardware are you refering to?.. last time I checked they were giving NGAGE away :D
