Gamespy leaks Xenon specs (?)

MS sure has some juice.

Apple is stuck under 3 Ghz for their $3000 computers yet MS already has access to dual-core chips, soon to be triple-core by the end of the year?

For a $300 console?

Why do they only supply two core chips to devkits? Isn't that more expensive than outright making three core chips, if that's what they're gonna use in final hardware?

I thought the devkits are one of those Mac with two processors and some ATI card.

Its not that MS has some juice (We all know they do), its just Apple is overprice.

Most likely the dual core chips are able to be made in larger numbers and are cheaper and will give the devs a good idea of what the chip will be capable of
Price of chip is hardly an issue with devkits that sell for 10s of thousands of $. But afaik the Devkits are still using PPC970s at the moment - thus dualcore.

Damn how did I post this twice :p edited second post.

Lol!!!! You don't think Europe has HDTV capable sets?

Since when did I say nobody in Europe has HDTV?, I didn't.. But its an extremely small minority of people who do have it. Far smaller then in the U.S. The massive majority of people in Europe will not be able to see a HDTV picture on their TV.

It tells us the fillrate which is important *sometimes*. While 4gp/s looks enough to handle 720p at high overdraw, the question is, is it enough to handle a game with heavy usage of render to texture or stencil fill?
Perhaps not - however, Stencil volumes are IMO a deadend at this point in time. As for the other thing - with their embeded memory supposed to hold only rendering buffers, there is a good chance render to texture will require copyback to mainmemory and thus be bound by bandwith, not really fillrate.

Well, don't worry about it, it'll still be plenty playable on your standard TV's. ;)

If MS is requiring all games to have a minimum resolution of 1280x720 then what does that mean for Europe? They're going to spend a large part of the XBox 2's power on something people won't see in Europe until like 2008..

Huh ?

You can buy HDTV capable TV's/projector's... here just like you can in the US so i don't see the problem. I know that i'll benefit from it with my Sony HS50 projector.

And there will be two HDTV channels here in Sweden at Q3-4 this year, though i don't see what the actual transmissions have to do with HDTV capable display units.

There will of course be a lot less people here that will benefit from it though.

As far as I know, the processor that is going to end up in XBox 2 is quite a bit different from G5, at least that's what Xbox 2 developers here assuredly claim. It will not have as many transisitors, thus being cheaper to produce, and able to run at higher clock.

Actually Teasy, it would seem you don't know what you wrote:

You said they won't see HDTV in Europe till 2008... mmmmright.

Where are you getting your ideas of HDTV penetration in Europe anyway? Are you making it up as you go along or have you actually read reports?

Oh yeah, and what's the big deal about providing 1280x720 support anyway? It's not like it's a massively high resolution - the current consoles already provide 720p, the only difference here is that the new consoles will have the fillrate and RAM to actually have this in games. They won't even break a sweat supporting this resolution.

I will be extremely disappointed if next gen consoles don't support HDTV resolutions.

Quetion is, why 720p? With all the momentum 1080p is gathering, why not shoot for that just to be safe? If you target 1080p and 720p becomes dominant in 2 years, you just have spare horsepower you can use. If its the other way around, you might be in trouble.

I'm surprised by cpu specs--- It must yield something around 18 billion instructions per second. How will it stay cool? For cooling and power reasons, I didn't think the rumour mill could've been real. Triple core at 3 Ghz :!:

gpu much as expected; 720p always w/ aa is the new minimun. Most surprising: Mandating letterbox for old sets. Memory is dissapointing but not surprising. I'd hoped for 512 (a gig in my wildest, most unrealistic dreams) but... oh well.

On the software side, nice mix of innovation and refinement. "Gamer cred" might give single player gamers reason to participate in the community, for example. Looks like the next gen will have more going for it then just graphics.

But the main things I want to know now is what the games will look like and how they'll power / cool the system.
