Forza Horizon 5 [XO, XBSX|S, PC, XGP]

Over 100GB? Nooooooo my poor XSS

I anticipated something around this install size. It's basically an open-world environment and a big one at that. And most open-world games don't require the model/detail fidelity that Forza has for so many vehicles.

i thought XSS will have a smaller install size as it's only a 1080p machine, thus not needing high res textures and videos. As this will be the first forza horizon to be developed for XS, i was hoping it'll do smarter smart delivery

I think most of the marketing for Series S was suggesting a machine targeting 1440p, i.e. the middle-ground between 1080p and 4K, but the reality is different for a lot of games and for gamers who only play on 1080p screens.

I think the problem for game designers, which obviously includes Microsoft as the developer of FH5, is that in some circumstances higher resolution textures are beneficial even for 1080p output (because close up, or because rendered at native and downscaled) but it may be tricky to identify such textures so as to reduce the resolution of textures less likely to be an issue.

Smarter smart-delivery could help it but it sounds like a tricky problem to solve.

They need to make things optional, language packs, 4k assets packs (videos & textures).
Every little bit adds up.

To make it simpler, make the options the same for XSS & XSX, just that the defaults are different.
Only time textures should not be optional is if XSS literally can't handle it.

some games do those, albeit with no option.

for example sea of pirates defaults to almost double size on XSX compared to XSS. IIRC there are 4-5 other games with this kind of defaults (XSX = larger install than XSS). But none of them have user option to select which ones to install

the amount of everything on screen in jungle is simply mind blowing

The game is absolutely stunning. I don't need any more racing games but I'm seriously tempted to pick it up for the graphics alone.

I even considering to buy a steering wheel! Been searching around... Then turns out there's no true cross platforms steering wheel. I need XS, PS5, pc compatibility. Bummer.

Which other racing games have you enjoyed? I only enjoy arcade racers and haven't played any worth my time other than FH titles for years now.
 
i would have liked them to use SSR on cars, at least in the 30fps mode, it's so much better for racing games than cubemaps. How much heavier is SSR over cubemapping ?

BTW tiny XsS version still looks amazing, can't wait to try it.

Plant deformation looks a bit weird at times to be honest in that video.
They just "pop" away in many instances
yes its doing vertex deformation which limits what they can do somewhat, Im guessing they are just drawing all the cars footprint into a map and deforming geometry based on that, Its not gonna look as good as a skeleton (some trees have skeletons though), though looks much better than not having the vegetation react at all. Im doing what forza does in my game.
Theres lots of occasions you can see this happening in the video, though this fern is too far away here. Im guessing in the next forza game most/all largish plants will have skeletons but this would be too much to handle for last generation consoles.

uh anyone know how heavier FH5 compared to FH4?

I'm in a conundrum where I'm planning to buy a steering wheel. turns out
  • there's no cross platform steering wheel (need to choose PS or xbox)
  • all xbox steering wheels are being sold with no warranty here. While PS steering wheels got 1-2 years warranty
  • PS steering wheels are around 50 dollars cheaper than xbox
Thus I'm thinking... what if... i simply play FH5 on my Ryzen 4500U laptop instead on my XSS? As all steering wheels works with Windows.

on FH4, 4500u ryzen can do 1080p30 at medium dynamic.

I'm curious as I was pretty sure that there weren't any that works across PS and xbox.
Something to do with property chip or something.

So my guess is your paying a premium for the wheel not the base.
Wonder how much extra it is
it's certainly costly, but yea, the base is compatible for both. You just need the wheel to be swapped when you switch from PS to Xbox
