see thats what i don't like. I want the story to unfold through the game. Not through a cut scene . Esp if the cut scene is more than a min or two. At the begining of the game its fine. At the end of the game its fine. But during the game it sucks .

If i want to watch a movie i will go to the movies . you know what i mean ?

yeah i guess... well i frikkin loved it, cut-scenes or not... the story was a bit overblown towards the end, but hey that's final fantasy for u...

Have you played the first 6?

i started playing the emulation on PC but never really got to play it properly... should pick up the PS1 version that came out some time ago... what was it called?

no clue i have the originals all in their boxes. They make the new ffs look like crap. The storys were great and they were fun to play . I honestly think its time they give up on the final fantsy games and move on to something else. Aren't 10 sequals enough .

Don't bother with the PSX versions, the load times are horrendous, the music was reworked *badly*, the sound effects are a little odd...

Stick with emulation :p

Hell, the PSX versions *are* emulated. If you put an FF:Anthologies CD in a PC, you can find the ROMs and run them in ZSNES/Snes9x...

well, it's 12 sequels now.....

heh... its time to burry the series. Talk about milking something. The problem is game mags keep giving them 9s and 10s ... I don't understand it.

well as i said, they are still better games than many out there at the end of the day, linearity or not, boring plots or not...

Perhaps because they´re fantastic games? Not everyone is looking for pointless, "boom" based games, you know? I also don´t see what´s so better about FFVI, (since it´s the 16-bit one I played due to recomendations, haven´t bothered with the rest), it´s too simple, and the characters are too primitive and kiddy when compared to VII - X.

And come on, at least in FFVI you see entire 15 minutes sequences of primitive small sprites, jumping pathetically to try to convey emotion due to the limitations of the hardware and talking in small boxes that pop up onscreen. :? Sometimes even with some lousy Mode 7 effects sometimes.

Cutscenes is a much better alternative than that, if you ask me. :sigh: It must be nostalgia, I guess.

Almasy, did you even pay attention to FF6's dialogue? :-?

FF7 IS better though.

See, the thing is, the games don't have "No gameplay" or wtf. People who don't like modern Final Fantasy are just people who don't like linearity taken to extremes, graphics and presentation at the expense of SOME gameplay (I still say people who say FF series has no gameplay are full of shit), and a total focus on an incredible story...

exactly. i absolutely loved FFX and one of the reasons why i put 150H on it was the presentation... everything in the game looks so perfect and there are SO many things to do it's unbelievable. after 150H i still havent completed it 100%. the game is absolutely immense.

Yeah I did, it wasn´t written too well if you ask me, except for a couple of funny moments.:) Still, it´s sort of irritating to see characters describing these huge events while "jumping" and doing faces like these:  to try to convey a little emotion. I felt the stories to be detached from the game, as if they were too grand to be representated properly in a 16 bit machine.

And I don´t think linearity is bad in the least. It allows you to focus on the grander details, on making characters and situations much more detailed, and the battle system is getting progresively better and more sophisticated. It´s much more of a focus in making the game an experience, rather than just a plain game.

will u be saying this about the current ffs while playing games on systems in 2 or 3 gens ? becaue it will be the same thing. the chars will look stupid trying to show emotion compared to 2 gens from now .

Of course not, because at least characters on PSOne were at least capable of showing some emotion, and having a bit of real animation. I also found the dialogue to be much better written, to the point where I could identify with the characters.
I didn´t care about characters in 16-bit RPGs because I didn´t felt them to be "there", they are just soulless jumping sprites to me.

when did you play the 16bit games ?

I wrote a lengthier reply, but I did something stupid and it got erased, so here´s a small summary..

- I did played FFVI, FFIV, Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, among others some time ago.

- The world they represent feels sterile and death to me, because the world they´re trying to represent is too complex and big for 16 bit games, and end up feeling barren and even bordering on dumb sometimes.

- No immersion or attachment to characters because of the same reason.

- Gameplay in the case of FFs feels (obviously) outdated, and while Chrono was okay, the absolute 0 immersion kills the game for me.

see to me it sounds like you played them after the 32bit gen. I played them when they first came out and just recently (well some of them) and the graphics at the time were amazing but the storys still work today. while not as complex as todays they were still in depth and compelling.

Well, honestly, don´t you think nostalgia has a lot to do in these "16-bit was soooo coool!!!" sentiments? And yes, you´re right, I got into RPGs during the PSX (a fantastic console) era. I don´t mean to put myself as an standard of "modern" RPG fan, but maybe because of that I ask for much more now than just jumping superdeformed sprites in barren (to an extent) worlds, with synthetized music.

I´d say a story without a proper presentation doesn´t really work as well as it should, especially in a visual media such as videogames. Honestly, do you think a story in...say FFVI, has every bit of impact as FFX when a person new to the genre plays them? Of course not.

Honestly, I think nostalgia plays a very large role in you liking those stories and old-school games.

sounds to me buddy that you lack all sense of imagination.

Speaking of which how many ppl have played Suikoden the orginal and found it absolutely amazing. I cried at the end, i was only 12 when i finished it.

I dunno i guess now adays with graphics in games so well done, it leaves no room for imaginig a scenario and therefore makes the game IMHO just a bit less interesting. I just dont have the same WOW factor anymore when i pick up a copy of an RPG.

Not at all, I read as often as I can, and I´d say I´ve got a pretty good sense of imagination. That´s not the problem.

Didn´t care - at least I cannot relate to jumping sprites. Especially when a lot of the motions the character does end up as funny because of how ridiculous the way to achieve it is (Like going to bed in Suikoden II).

Isn´t videogames supposed to be an audio-visual media? Why then should I "imagine" a city being attacked or something of the sort when all I see is a red flashing on screen and the same background with a couple of animated flame bitmaps added? In short, that I call lame.

Imagination should be used to solve challenges and puzzles, not to actually imagine the scenario you´re in.

yet u can releate to polygons ... which are just little triangles ? come on man . Its a game. Who cares if its text base or has real life graphics ... if the storys stink and the game play stinks then the games will stink .
