Final Fantasy XVI (FF16) [PS5]

How can this be?! This is a pure next gen title, the visuals on offer here are anything but that! The game looks like a moderately upgraded FF15! I remeber FF15 was breathtaking when it was announced 10 years ago, but this .. this is underwhelming! It's like the only thing they could extract from the PS5 is the bigger world and the 60fps!
They were busy making an actual game. Something ff15 should have been doing when that team was busy trying to make the engine itself(which will now go nowhere)

When it comes down to it, devs have to decide how to proceed and it was much easier, efficient and cost effective to take the engine they already were using(ff14 engine) and upgrade it to their needs.

On top of the design asthetic of the team naturally going towards realism and understated character designs compared to Nomura and creative business unit one, creative business unit 3s focus on scale much more than immediate fidelity.

Even with the power the current gen affords, FF7R2 is definitely not going to be as wide or expansive in terms of overall scale as ff16 is in terms of pure size of the world, even if im going to bank on it being more pretty. I don't even know if they are still using ue4 or have moved everything to ue5...I would hope the latter. I want to see some lumen and nanite geometry!

Yoshi-P just said on the FFXIV Live Letter that he hopes the game won't need a day one patch at all. So based on that it seems like the game isn't just finished pending polish, but done done.

That makes sense in theory but doesn’t explain all the broken UE4 games. That engine is old as dirt now. I don’t think I’ve ever played Final Fantasy but the last few games look interesting. Will try to grab FF XV or FF VII on one of the big sales.

Ff7 remake is amazing but it's secretly meant for people already invested in the ff7 sub franchise(the og FF7, crisis core, advent children etc)

Getting into FF now is kind of difficult since there are so many different types of final fantasy and they all appeal to different groups. The og boomer FF NES people from ff1 to 5, the ff6 faithful, the fans who swear by the PS1 golden age of ff7 8 and 9. The people who are obsessed with ffx on ps2, the matsuno fans who consider ff11, 12 and 14 gospel..if your weird you like the ff13 trilogy 😂 or ff15

Are there any modernized JRPGs in the style of FF6? Epic scope, deep character growth system, side quests that don't seem like they were generated by an AI, very story driven etc.

Octopath Traveller is in that style. The second game that just released is significantly better than the first. It is a slower paced game, however, and modern gamers may not like that. I really enjoy it however.

I've also heard REALLY good things about Chained Echoes, but haven't tried it yet.

hmm. seems the story goes back to the usual final fantasy's inscrutable / confusing dialogue / story, caused by new/confusing words. in that aspect, forspoken is surprisingly much better than final fantasy.

btw the dated engine looks really obvious in this trailer (when the narrator says "the power of PS5" it even felt like a sarcasm with how flat the delivery was lol).

I love the fast paced DMC style action but I really hope there will still be some strategic means and gameplay mechanic to it and won't turn into just a hack-n-slash feast.
I also as used to use more than just the main sword for characters. I love the idea of the eikons abilities but I wish there were more classic FF magic elements like Ultima etc.Hope there ill be a playable demo at some points. cant wait to get it in my hands.

Some scenes where main character fights one on one in almost empty scenery very cubic like looks very odd. The game looks vary from very good to very meh imo. For me personally gfx is not the selling point of this game but combat system is. Looks like lot of fun.

yeah me too. as long as the game is good.
i even completed (and enjoyed) forspoken before they fixed the texture loading issue lol.

my brain wont be able to stop noticing the jarring IQ tho.

maybe will buy after a discount or something.

Depends on what you mean by 'modernized'.

There's a lot of pretty good JRPG's still being made in a more 'classic style', but none with the sort of presentation values of mainline Final Fantasy games. Which is really the big shame here. It's not that us fans of classic-style JRPG's aren't being served anything, we're just not getting the best dishes anymore like we used to. We're now just kind of more second class citizens, especially by Square's perspective, only deserving of lower budget efforts.

Still, I'd definitely recommend Octopath Traveler II and Chained Echoes very heavily, as somebody already suggested. And beyond that, there's still quite a lot to enjoy that fit most of your criteria: Persona 4/5, Bravely Default series, Trails in the Sky series, Triangle Strategy, The World Ends With You(and sequel) and Yakuza Like a Dragon(for something different).

Xenoblade series is one of my absolute favorites, but the side quest stuff can be very generic at times(though also quite good at others, particularly in XC2 and 3). Still, these are the games that I feel best capture the magic and epicness of classic Final Fantasy games, albeit with very different structure and combat systems for the most part.

This definitely feels like a decent step beyond what last gen could handle, even if it's not quite a technical showcase like some were hoping. Feels 'early next gen' in nature, when devs are making good use of the new hardware with the tools they have.

I also think you're perhaps misremembering FFXV a bit. Yea, it was breathtaking when it was announced before the XB1/PS4 were even released, but by the time it came out, it was only just another 'good looking game' and not anything overly special.

Square's AAA studios still make great looking games, but they haven't been a sort of 'cutting edge' leader in visuals since like FFXIII(which somehow still looks pretty good even today).

FF16 actually looks worse than FF15 in some parts. ESPECIALLY the trees.

btw FF16 engine is actually based on a way more ancient engine than the one FF15 use. So the visual upgrade from FF14 to 16 is actually quite big.

Not really seeing it, having just looked at some footage of both back to back. FFXVI's trees look just as good overall, and importantly have a LOT more variety. FFXV had like the same basic tree model copy/pasted over and over and over.

I saw maybe one tree in the FFXVI footage with like a fairly low geometry trunk or whatever, but that's about the worst thing I could find.

Personally ff7r looks amazing art wise and is in the graphical area I always wanted to see, where they have reached near their visual works cgi studio fidelity which I think was the goal of Square Enixs graphics department since they started caring about graphics. They essentially "accomplished the goal" so there isn't much left to reach for. Infact the in game graphics looked a little more appealing visually than the CGI portions of the game which looked a bit too clean and unnatural.

But the PS4 release was let down by textures of the real time segments and the scope of the game was clearly very limiting. They were pushing the absolute limits of PS4 with the games presentation. With the ps5 and PC versions the texture issue was solved. And supposedly ff7r 2 will be making full use of PS5 so the scope will also be bigger.

In general, that's all I have wanted since I was a teenager witnessing the visual insanity called advent children thinking we would never get there in terms in graphical fidelity in a console game in 100 years. And that's just presuming they are still using unreal engine 4! If they have switched to ue5 and start using lumen, Nanite and the like, that's like going far beyond even my wildest expectations.

Although considering when the game was started I can only assume they are still on ue4 or moved to the the ue5 dev environment but are not using lumen and Nanite(supposedly like Tekken 8) because they started production right when the engine was released

Ooof, vegetation in the distance is oddly blurred and somewhat unstable. It's like they are using some form of reconstruction for the visuals.

I stopped playing FFXIV an expansion or two ago as I didn't have time, so I'm not sure if this is something new to the base engine or if it's something they are doing just for FFXVI.
