When I speak about the game being 'last-gen', I'm talking about all the last-gen graphics techniques that haven't been improved.

We can go all into technical details if you like but I think it'll become boring talking about those things. As someone already mentioned here about the 'technical' aspects of the game:

"Everything else is a mixed bag
Lod system is broken, lighting has no ambiance, shadows are rough, AO is missing. Everything looks barren. Reflections are worse than previous gen games."

This is the big one to me and what makes the difference between a game using last-gen techniques and one using curren-gen techniques.. So if you can come up with a counter-argument on technical merit, I'm all ears.

Looks like some people are experiencing over heating while playing this game. One user in the article claims they fixed it by dusting the system

I was referring to Forespoken

Game looks better than metro exodus or control on ps5/xsx apparently with nextgen lighting

Sorry but at least the shadows in this game are better than basically any other game I can think of. At times they look like RT shadows, but they’re not. Maybe you should play the game before passing judgement. Or not, who cares.

Shadows is pretty much the ultimate feature that will make dramatic differences in games. I haven't noticed any extra shadows that would make it stand out from the crowd. Shadow casting light sources is one thing. Ambient occlusion of every object in the scene is something entirely different (and more costly).

The clean self shadows are really impressive. If it’s not RT they’re doing something else with high precision. Self shadow artifacts are one of the ugliest things in games but the shadows look great here.

I agree with the DF video that outdoor sunlit areas are decidedly less impressive. Somehow the lighting lacks depth outdoors.

Isn't thw shadows only looks bad in some places?

Maybe they didn't have time. Maybe those places were made early on, before they improved their visuals, or maybe thee gme was originally planned for PS4. Etc

Most places got good shadows

Next gen isn't defined specifically by a technical improvement to all individual rendering techniques, though. Next gen is simply when the package as a whole is beyond what could be done the previous generation. There's this weird movement in some circles where ray tracing seems to literally define 'next gen' and so anything not using ray tracing isn't next gen, and this is just kind of ridiculous. Although I see these sorts of comments mostly from people who own RTX cards, which I'm sure is a total coincidence...

I also think those specific claims there in quotes are just outright hyperbolic and do not represent what I'm seeing in the least. It's not cutting edge no, and I'd agree there's mixed bag elements for sure, but the overall presentation is definitely beyond anything I'd have expected to see released in the PS4/XB1 generation. Like, if this came out in mid 2020 looking like this, people would have been absolutely blown away. I think it's perhaps useful to go back and remind yourself what games actually looked like last gen.

What people define as 'next-gen' is completely subjective and there is no literal meaning that's objective. So many people will argue with no basis in fact causing a bunch of chaos in threads.

To me, I consider 'next-gen' to be in milestones from visuals only because most games have the same overall design they've had for years and years. Diablo is a perfect example where there isn't much in gameplay differences from D1 to D4.

Game is an absolute blast so far. It feels a tad old school with the frequent "gameplay" -"cut scene"-"gameplay" loop. But, weirdly enough, this game kinda satisfies my God of War needs?! It has super cool bombastic boss battles with lots of action spectacle - I love it!

I am not sure what I think about the combat, it now opened up quite a bit when unlocking the second spell category. Story is kinda cool to follow was well.

TLDR: I miss ol' God of War 3.

The titan boss fight reminded me of the God of War 3 Cronos fight.

I only figured out after 20 hours of gameplay that you could change the competences you can use in fight.
I like how the backgournds are filled with geometry, it's not nanite density, but still, lots of elements that normally are just textures or POM, are actual geometry in this game.
