Paris Hilton arrested on drugs charge
Celebrity socialite Paris Hilton has been arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession following a World Cup match, South African police has revealed.
It is reported that Hilton was detained following Netherlands' 2-1 victory over Brazil in Friday's quarter-final tie at Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Bay stadium.
A police spokeswoman, Brig. Marinda Mills, would not confirm Hilton's name but did admit that a high-profile individual would be appearing in court on drugs-related charges.
"This person is appearing in court right now," Mills told AP. "We cannot reveal information about her until she has appeared in court. I am here with the individual in court, we're waiting for the court to start."
AP reports that Hilton's publicist Dawn Miller was awaiting further details of the incident before commenting.
A police offer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the news agency that Hilton had been caught with marijuana. It is reported she was escorted from the stadium for allegedly smoking the drug.
"She was found in possession of some amount of dagga [marijuana]," the officer said. "We don't know how much. It's a high profile person, only the top cops are dealing with it."
Hilton posted on her Twitter account following the game: "Had so much fun at the game today. What a match! I love South Africa!"
