Eye Of Judgement

kind of odd they would render the background...? (first pic, etc)
It's a PR shot anyway ;)

BTW, regarding your previous post, this video has more detailed demo of the game and it shows the dragon reacting differently when touched from different directions (around 1:20).

They seriously need to improve the game models. They look like low polygon PSP models. I don't think any normal person would want to stare at PSP 3d models at 1080p.

This game looks like it was originally designed for PS2 and EyeToy and later the project was transferred to PS3.
The art is terrible, it really does look like a bumped up mediocre PS2 game.

Were you guys expecting amazing mind blowing graphics? Its a eyetoy game, and a card game at that, I'm suprised it looks as good as it does now. I dont see anything wrong with it, the particle effects look pretty damn good imo. In motion it should look even better. Show me another camera/eyetoy based game that looks this good.

man that video sounds like it has a lot of interesting details, wish i knew japanese. ah well, visually it helps, thanks one.

edit: any idea what happened when he placed the card over the other card already laid down? I'm assuming it gave the existing card more power or somthing.

The "Eyedentify" game looked much much better, though that was probably more just a demo than an actual game.

might even give the edge to EOJ just because it seems it has more more post processing effects. hdr + motion blur + dof? and like you mentioned, bump mapping.

He calls it Spell Card which explains the usage. The particular spell can reverse the field which has one of 5 properties.

AFAIK PS2 EyeToy games suck in graphics, but I was impressed by this new game at E3

I guess I just dislike the art of Eye Of Judgement.
Bt I agree, as a card game it looks acceptable.
The fact it is just a card game means they don't have to much, like 1000s of enemies on screen of huge worlds, so they can really splash out on the models and lighting, which they haven't done. I'd have liked them to provide a realistic look. But I guess that would look wrong if the lighting doesn't match the room lighting, so they'd have to go with an artistic renderer. They could still up the poly counts of the characters and grounds by like a factor of 10!

I think the eyetoy has something to do with it. Doesnt the cpu have to take in and process all that camera data. It would probably support why every eyetoy game there is looks lesser than it's regular non-eyetoy game counterparts. But im not sure where the gpu plays in all this.

If you look at last gen eyetoy games, and ps3 eyetoy games, this is a pretty huge jump.

Yes, you have to process the image. Obviously that's quite demanding, at least in their current implementation, as the update of the character relative to the card is slow. But there's none of that happening during the battle scenes where there's no camera interaction, meaning you've got pretty much all of Cell and all of RSX to throw at visuals. I'd expect a graphical tour-de-force with the must lush environments and characters ever seen! (well hope for, anyway ;) )

Sorry for a bump, but the release date for Eye of Judgment has been set to Fall 2007.

The new USB camera, PLAYSTATION Eye can capture video at 120fps in 320x240 or at 60fps in 640x480. The camera angle is 56 or 75 degrees. It has a 4-channel microphone for voice chat too.

I wonder if that camera is the new eyetoy, or something different? It seems to be called 'PlayStation Eye', but SCE did trademark Eye3 aswell..

Looking forward to this either way, though.

edit - looks like it probably is the new eyetoy hardware. Sony announced a new PSN game yesterday, 'Snakeball', mentioning this:

Choose from a variety of Snakeball riders – and if you want something more personal, you can map your own face onto a rider with the next-generation PLAYSTATION®Eye USB camera.

Snakeball is out in July. So the camera would have to be released by then, presumably. Maybe with some next-gen eyetoy software? :) There was word that SCEE was working on a couple of new eyetoy games, so perhaps we'll see one of them sooner than we might have expected.

edit - or maybe not. SCEE just announced the Playstation Eye peripheral and its release details, but no sign of any eyetoy game software per se. So it may come later. I made a thread for that announcement here:

Hasbro Lends Trading Card Leadership and Expertise to Sony Computer Entertainment's THE EYE OF JUDGMENT(TM) for PLAYSTATION(R)3

PAWTUCKET, R.I.-(Business Wire)-April 26, 2007 - Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS) announced today that it is working with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on the trading card component of the highly innovative THE EYE OF JUDGMENT(TM) game for the PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system. The global relationship, which covers Japan, Europe, the U.S. and Asian markets, taps Hasbro's core expertise in trading card games through its Wizards of the Coast subsidiary. Wizards of the Coast holds a patent on trading card games and the methods by which they are played and also produces MAGIC: THE GATHERING(R), the world's premier trading card game. Under the agreement, Hasbro will create, manufacture and distribute the trading cards associated with THE EYE OF JUDGMENT video game.

THE EYE OF JUDGMENT presents a new style of gameplay where the player brings creatures of trading cards to life for battle in 3D. Through use of a 3 x 3 board and trading cards, each encrypted with CyberCode, players conquer the field by selecting a card and placing the coded card in front of the PLAYSTATION(R)Eye for their respective creatures to come to life and battle. Each creature has various skills which will determine the outcome of the battle. Players take turns placing cards as they jostle for control of the board; the winner is the first player to conquer five of the nine fields.

"We are very excited to enter into a collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment on trading cards for THE EYE OF JUDGMENT which will deliver a ground-breaking entertainment experience that uniquely blends the global popularity of traditional trading card games with next-generation video games," said Phil Jackson, Group Executive of Hasbro Games. "Together we're creating a virtual world that brings fantastic trading card-based creatures to life for unprecedented interactive battles that will appeal to millions of fans around the world. It is innovation at its best."

"THE EYE OF JUDGMENT represents a totally new genre in gaming," said Phil Harrison, Corporate Executive, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and President, SCE Worldwide Studios. "Combining Hasbro's clear market leadership in trading card games with the immense power of PLAYSTATION(R)3 and PLAYSTATION(R)Eye, is a powerful formula that will result in a revolutionary video game experience that will amaze and engage gamers around the world."

THE EYE OF JUDGMENT is slated for release in fall 2007. The game has already received early accolades from media around the world as well as a prestigious Japan Game Award in the "Futures" division held at last year's Tokyo Game Show.

Probably a good idea given their experience.

Yap. Hasbro's board/card game distribution to game/gift stores worldwide is invaluable here. In general, 1 board/card game has too little margin to justify for full-time sales rep's nationwide.

Hasbro has thousands of SKUs to aggregate sales and negotiate power with the distributors (and retailers).

My younger self created a board game and we tried to distribute it ourselves. We found out how it works the hard way.

It's looking a lot better. Gameplay seems to be there. The vid didn't show the card interactivity - it'd have been nice to see if that had improved. Two niggles. One is the battles all take place in the same arena, rather than different environments as before. And two, that soundtrack is dire! Heavy metal is not a good choice for a constant background music!
