Extra Port on the Revolution?

Going by the shape it looks more like firewire than anything else

Hey ! You stole my line !
Definetly looks like firewire (aka IEEE1394).
[Added one extra info :p]

It's not a firewire port, those are much wider than they're tall and the Rev has no use for one anyway. It'd just be a pointless waste of money sticking one there, not even Sony's putting any on the PS3, and grud knows they've included pretty much every other interface on the planet. ;)

TOSLink optical SPDIF port, no doubt about it. It plays DVDs, so it's going to have some way of outputting digital audio.

Ever compared digital video over firewire compared to USB2? Apple and oranges.

I haven't, care to elaborate? I'm actually interested. Doesn't USB2 have pretty much the same bandwidth as Firewire, in real world efficiency?

Assuming that pic is to scale. That thing is neither the right shape or the right size to be a Firewire port. Firewire jacks are a little shorter than USB, but not THAT much shorter.

BTW I don't see any broadband network interface on this thing. What is nintendos online plans?

No. Like LB on specs I do't see the point to FireWire. Plus, importantly, why does Revolution want access to people's digital video cameras? Outside of video (which is FireWire's niche when it was the only thing quick enough) it serves no purpose, being droped from PS2 too.

This pic?

First port from the left is definitely optical, be it SPDIF, MOST or D2B or whatever else. Or are you guys talking about the smaller one to the right above? (my proxy won't let me see the IGN page :() I can't imagine why they'd want to have two optical interfaces, so I guess it's something else.

mmh indeed...
Dunno what it is then, maybe optical, don't see the point for a GAME console :p
(not like I see the point of having firewire either in fact ^^)

I wonder what's with 0001.6

[Edit]
I remember having seen a connector shaped like this one somewhere, but I can't remember where, neither when...

Why not? DD 5.1 and optical go together very well. Either that or coaxial. Ps2 had optical not only because od DVD playback, but because DD and DTS were used in games.

Um, that's the power socket dude! ;) Haven't you seen the plug used on gamecube? Looks very similar.

Or are you guys talking about the smaller one to the right above?
Yea, the little square one with the notched corner. It's almost without doubt a toslink plug I'd say. If not, it's some proprietary connection for the revmote sensor bar.

It looks like another opening for air flow, plus some expansion slots.
The "expansion slots" depicted in that pic are likely the areas where product labels are applied. The grille does indeed look like an air intake. I wonder how it ISN'T blocked completely when one places the Rev in the cradle...

Of course !
The sensor bar... completely forgotten about it, not sure it's connected with a wire though, but likely will be, if it's the case, then it's most likely its connector indeed.

I wonder are the three to the left grouped in a logical manner, if it's SensorBar + Power + Video, then it would be [everything you need to connect to play], or is it related to the Video plug ?
Bah we'll now sooner or later anyway :)

Haha you guys are getting excited over nothing. Now for some schooling. :p It's not Firewire nor USB. It is true that both Firewire and USB have mini versions, but they do not look like that. It's not Toslink as toslink have at least two beveled edges. That is not a ventilation hole either. If it is then somebody needs to be shot. It's more likely the connector for the sensor bar which needs direct power.;) Only the DPD uses batteries.

The cradle doesn't cover the back of the Revolution.

Looking at the above image it looks like Revolution will use a very small fan mounted flush with the back. It doesn't seem to be using a centrifugal fan. This means the fan is a 2cm unit which is smaller than the GC fan which was 2.5cm.
