I would just like to mention that the <$100 EMU 0404 is very popular over at head-fi.org. With a little modding it competes with audiophile CD players, apparently.

The software that accompanies Sound Blaster cards to date is not specifically designed for connectivity of the hardware to home-theater amplifiers.

They said they wanted make a software update (link). Probably they want to avoid being sued.
