Epic has literally given away Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament 99 to OldUnreal.com staff, so you can download both games for free on their website... Maybe Epic doesn't care about the Unreal series anymore. It's worth noting that these are the same people who have been updating the game for years so that it can run on modern systems...

Unreal wasn't the best game ever but technically it was like Crysis at the time. Watching that intro on my Voodoo Monster 3DFX, with the transparencies, the coronas of the lights, overall lighting, the "clean" textures.... was superb.

UT 99 was a better game imho. It was one of the first games -along with AoE2 in the MS Zone- that I started playing online. I still remember how many times I played that unforgettable legendary map called Facing Worlds, which has its own Wikipedia entry.

Reception

[edit]
Facing Worlds is frequently listed as one of the greatest multiplayer maps of all time.[2][3][4][5][6] According to Fiorentino, telemetry for Unreal Tournament revealed that Facing Worlds was played more than all other Capture the Flag levels combined.[1]

Andy Kelly of PC Gamer deemed Facing Worlds "the greatest multiplayer map" in a 2020 retrospective, praising the map for its "beautifully simple design".[7] Speaking of his time playing Facing Worlds at LAN parties, Kevin Wong of Kotaku regarded the map as being "so well-designed, so carefully constructed, that every other CTF map paled in comparison."[8] Peter Glagowski of Destructoid commented that "it is hard to understate the mastery of design that is CTF-Face", praising the map for encouraging teamwork and playstyle diversity without sacrificing its simplicity.[6]

I'd like you to really think about how you can reduce the thread title to at most 1/3 of the length whilst still communicating the intent.

From the free games thread
maybe @Dictator could shed some light on that. It sounds very interesting for sure. UT 99 one of the best most influential games to date -specially online, but also the bots were "ok-ish"- would look really unique, many years after, with the RTX Remix treatment.

anyone who tried the game, does the option to use Vulkan appear if you launch Unreal Tournament 99? I know that Vulkan appears as a viable option for other people, but not for me. I have an Intel A770.

It puzzles me 'cos I installed the very latest drivers to see if that was the issue, but to no avail. No Vulkan for me. Vulkan works really well on Intel GPUs....

Clicking on "Show all devices" adds other (exotic) options but no Vulkan either.

UT99 is still one of my fave games, still have a copy installed with the latest fan patches.
been playing UT 99 today from Oldunreal.com. It's stil soooo fun, specially Capture The Flag, my favourite game mode at the time. I managed to win 3-0 -the bots by default weren't super challenging but enough to keep it fun/interesint-.

The game continues to be truly excellent, and one of my favourite FPS weapons ever, the Shockrifle is still so satisfying to use.

When I was playing it I could understand the countless hours people put into it back in the day. Online play was a blast, but you also had bots when your connection wasn't working and the game received great maps and so on. You could play for hours and hours against bots. That novelty of game modes like Capture the Flag and so on wore off, but there is still sheer fun in it now that they are gone 'cos it's just not popular as of currently.

Back then, with worse connections, less distractions, etc, you could easily clock thousands of hours in a game like this, specially after maps like Facing Worlds appeared.

I loved UT2003 to death, I also occasionally play UT2007 to this day. I wish Epic would bring the series back.

I don't have Vulkan either, I am using a 2080Ti, Windows 10 and latest drivers.

ah okayyyy. Now I get it. I asked a guy who showed an option to use Vulkan in the game but I didn't see it and he explained to me that for the DX11, DX12 and Vulkan options to appear you gotta copy the files of this open source Github repository in the "system" folder of your Unreal Tournament 99 install. I'm gonna try that.

UT2k4 remains the best FPS I’ve ever played. UT2k7 was a huge letdown. It played like a mod for Gears. I like Gears but that is not how UT should feel.

the last Unreal game I played is Unreal Tournament The Liandry Conflict for the OG Xbox. I was so hyped with it and I liked the game although not as much as UT 99. UT2k4 is only for PC?

Btw, I noticed that Unreal 2 is available at Oldunreal.com too. I had the original Unreal but I didn't remember there was a second part. Gotta give it a try, although I expect it wasn't as technically revolutionary as the first.

@DavidGraham I tried Vulkan using the files I shared in a previous post and it works really fine. Even so I switched to DirectX 12 because of Auto HDR support. Vulkan still lacks support for HDR afaik.
