Elden Ring [2022-21-01] [PS, XB, PC]

Game reviews are a subjective score of how worth playing it is. There's an unlimited supply of 9s and 10s to go around, no one review is taking anything out of another game's pocket. A game with so-so gameplay and amazing tech can be unmissable, and a game with so-so tech and amazing gameplay can be unmissable.

Disappointing to hear the xbox performance from the network test has carried through to the final product. Probably going to get this on xbox so I can grab it ~20 hours early and also out of blind faith in VRR.
I’m very worried about PC performance. But let’s see what they day one patch and drivers can do here.

The reports from the PC version are all over the place. Scrhreier says the opposite. He moved from his PC with a 1080 to his ps5 and says the game ran so poor there he went back on his Pc where it ran better. PC Gamer claims ocassional stutters in the open world after prolonged periods of time. Rock Paper Shotgun made an article with the pc performance and settings actually claiming they're happy with it. That tweet does not correspond to any other pc performance report

I really hope you right hopefully with some tweaking my 1660ti will be able to run it with 60 fps at 1080p. I would love to play it on big screen on XSX but drops to low 40 will be to much. Sad face

Considering that a reviewer with a 1080 said performance was fine for him while a reviewer with a 3080 said performance was bad for him makes me think that some people aren't configuring the settings of the game to run well on their machine while others are. IE - the "must run in ultra if I have a good video card regardless of whether it runs well and then complain that it doesn't run well" mentality of some foolish PC gamers.

From software has never gone for technically impressive graphics so I'm not surprised that when they decided to try to make this title more graphically intensive that they weren't able to optimize it as well as larger developers who focus on graphics over gameplay.

In a way I'm kind of glad because From Software has always focused on gameplay before graphics for their Souls games. And that's the approach I prefer. Gameplay should always be a game maker's first priority, yet so many developers fall for the trap of putting graphics first and gameplay second. It's why I find most AAA games so bland, boring and uninteresting. Looking at what I've played in the past year, I think there's a grand total of 2 or 3 AAA games with like 30 or 40 indy and AA games that many gamer's foolishly turn their noses up at because they aren't "graphically impressive". But their loss because the gameplay absolutely stomps all over most AAA games, IMO.

That also makes me surprised at it getting so many good reviews on Metacritic. Usually, reviewers will ding a game hard if the graphics aren't really good regardless of how good they found the gameplay.

SB

Some quick info on the patch and performance from Miles:

"Can confirm that the day one patch makes a huge difference for framerate on Series X. Sequences during rain had noticeable frame drops, but from what I'm seeing now there are no discernable frame drops."

Over here praying to the Elden Lords that a similar quote can be found for the PC version. :(

Edit.. ok apparently PC version is much improved now

Still cautiously awaiting until I can finally confirm for myself lol

Oh sure but what I'm saying how can this game score 97/100 when there is obviously undeniably a lot that can be improved, It just shows ratings are broken.

Though on a positive looking at the videos the game reminds me a lot of my own game, though my gameplay is not as fun. But still bodes well for my game.
These ratings say to me polish etc is not so important, just work on the gameplay

Most of the mainstream sites publish their review criteria and technical issues really aren't a big factor in determining the the score unless they impact the ability to play or complete a game, like really poor frame rates, crashed will hit your score but varying frame rates won't because the vast majority of gamers seemingly don't care. In the 360/PS3 generation, frame rates of mid-20s were uncommon, even games dropping to high teens (GTA V, Red Dead Redemption) didn't impact the scores of those games.

Most reviews are looking at the mechanics, the story and how the game feels to play.

Metacritic rating is out and it's an absolute monster - 97 so far.

its only february and we already have GOTY ;)

Usually, I don't pay attention to IGN reviews, but one thing the speaker mentions resonates with me.

No open world markers on the map. More importantly the lack of them helped him avoid "open world fatigue". Here's to hoping that without the map being absolutely cluttered with stuff, I'll actually finish an open world game, something that is extremely rare for me.

I really like that review. It actually talks about the open world in a way that makes me, again, feel like I won't suddenly stop playing due to "open world fatigue".

Also, I just looked on Steam at my Dark Souls III play time. 233 hours. :p

As long as "open world fatigue" doesn't set in for me, I'm probably going to end up spending a LOT of time in this game unless the real world prevents me from doing so. :p

Aaaaugg, still ~9.5 hours until I can play. :p

Elden Ring performance: what to expect on PS5, Series X/S and PC

Digital Foundry's early impressions of each version.

"However, even running on the launch day patch 1.02, the frame-rate mode continues to run at a range of 45-60fps on PS5 and Series X, while the quality modes on each range between 30-60fps. Both machines run with entirely unlocked frame-rates, and much like the network test, there's still no 30fps cap to even out the wavering reading in quality mode. The result? A highly variable performance for the quality mode in particular, where 60fps is rarely - if ever - achieved on PS5 or Series X."

In comparison, PS5 is typically operating at a higher frame-rate than Series X, though clearly neither is ideal. The bottom line is neither console offers a consistent 60fps in the final release.

The PC situation is also worth clarifying. As it currently stands the PC version using the latest 1.02 patch has a number of issues that will affect all hardware configurations on all graphical settings presets. Elden Ring is From Software's first foray into low-level APIs on PC and the game uses DirectX 12. As we have seen in other DX12 titles, there can be severe and distracting frame-time stuttering issues.

First there are stutters of up to 250 milliseconds in length when new effects, enemies, and areas appear on screen. These types of stutter lessen as the play experience goes on and enemies, areas, and effects are revisited by the player. A second and more pervasive stutter appears to be tied to loading new game areas - when traversing the terrain, moving from one area to the next can cause minor one-off frame drops a few times a minute, or at worst, tumbling frame-time issues that drop the frame-rate from a steady 60 into the 40s."

Between 30 and 60fps, rarely achieving the latter. Thats basically unplayable then. Why not cap it to 30fps, did they even play the game themselfs on consoles before releasing the title?

As expected... it's trash.

I'm so tired of this. And this game is sitting at a 95 meta... Reviewers ought to be ashamed of themselves for downplaying these issues and at best mentioning performance in a single paragraph or sentence..

PC gaming especially is truly f'ed. There's not enough accountability for quality. Just push out trash and if enough of a stink is made then you attempt to patch it....and only then.. it seems. Idiot PC fanboys will act like there's no problems and that everything is fine....

No.. everything is not fine. Either developers start optimizing their games properly AND NOT RELEASING THEM until they function properly... or the quality is just going to get worse and worse.. THERE ARE TOOLS at their disposal to help mitigate these issues. Pre-compiling shaders is but one of them.. And if there's not the proper tools... then maybe the powers that be need to get off their asses and start working on this problem before less important stuff... and then we'll have Nvidia and AMD advertising their upcoming 40 series and 7000 series GPUs like... WHO GIVES A GOD DAMN... when the BIGGEST ISSUE facing PC gaming... is the code that runs on the CPU. Sorry.. but I don't give a crap about how high my framerate can get in between hitches and stutters.

The industry needs to come together to address this problem. Something has to be done... It's just ridiculous at this point.

People are getting a framerate thats between 30 and 60fps, for graphics that dont even….
Unplayable games no matter what mode, thats not what users buy into ’next generation’ consoles for. And its not just this game, DL2 is running the highest settings which the consoles cant handle, even FW a first party game has bugs and issues, users need to restart their games/machines to allivate things, cp2077 was a mess, this wasnt the case before.
Then we have the xss. Guess patches and workarounds are the future. Games get high scores based on what studio published them.
Quality gaming seems to be the past and users just accept it.

This cant continue.

welp there it is.
Another bloodborne experience.. fuck. I hope they fix it at least this time around. Maybe best to wait for yet another patch? Maybe wrap up cyber punk first. sigh.. really tired of this shit

I dont get it, just do whatever is necessary to fix this shit. This is not optimal user experience.

I was hoping the 'game ready driver' from nvidia would make it happen. Apparently it's optimized for Elden Ring.. sigh... but clearly not.

here's my hope.. fingers crossed (likely wont be the case) but currently geforce experience with new drivers does not recognize my pre-load of Elden Ring - so I'm hoping when the release is allowed the drivers will fix stuff.

yea? no.. lol
ah sigh. today is a depressing day of emotions and i need a distraction.

Watching Cohh play the PC version. There are obvious frame drops when the engine is loading into a new world chunk. Combat seems relatively unaffected so far. Camera panning also doesn't look smooth.

Will have to see when I play it and mess around with the graphics options. I'll likely have it set lower than what Cohh is using. Well, definitely will since I don't have a 3090. :p

Not totally unexpected, DS2 was a mess on PC at launch. DS3 was better but still not flawless. This doesn't seem to be nearly as dire as the DS2 PC launch, however. Hopefully, there will be frequent performance patches. From Software has done a good job of supporting the Souls games after launch.

That said, the gameplay looks glorious and the graphics are a quite noticeable step up from DS3. The graphics aren't going to win any awards, but it looks really good for a Souls game.

Gah, I'm Jonesing so much to play this. Another 7.5 hours until I can play. Aaaaauuuuugh. OMG, that first open world mini-boss looks amazing.

SB
