Elden Ring [2022-21-01] [PS, XB, PC]

I wish I could. Pre-load should start in about 12 hours. And then 48 hours after that I'll be able to play. :)

Fortunately I'm busy with Robot Dinosaurs 2, which is utterly tremendous. I'm not sure Elden Ring is my thing as I play games to enjoy them and the game is coming with heavy expectation of being more punishing than pleasurable but everything else about Elden Ring intrigues me.

Why is this forum so baren when the internet is losing its mind over Elden Ring right now ? :D

Saw this video. Dont know how accurate those free online looking graph tools are, but performance looks universally embarassing. Droping frames left and right on every mod. PC has some conflicting reports.

well isn't there some big controversy about Digital Foundry waiting for the day one patch to test the performance in this instead of the code they were sent ?

How is it a 'big controversy'? They already clarified that they always wait for a day-1 patch. And this game was released late to reviewers.

NEXT!

Metacritic rating is out and it's an absolute monster - 97 so far.
o_O, have problem with understanding phenomen of this genre as games seems for me quite empty, almost without story, lack of checkpoint and repetition of dying just irritate me tough I gave Demon Souls chance (because of awsome graphics) and had good time playing mage but still think its not my thing. I wanted to ignore Elden Ring as isnt impressive looking but seeing scores Im kinda interested tough gt7 incomming and playing forbiden west so for sure not now.

^ There is for some, yes :) Although when was the last time performance was altered so dramatically by these magic patches we need to eternaly wait that it took a game from running bad to being excelent ? Maybe it's different for review builds, i dont know. For us regular folk, waiting for the x patch is similar to the "wait for the driver". You can take a year old driver and every 2022 game so far will run exactly the same as it does with the "game ready driver"

The game drops in the 30's in the above video running on quality. Will the magic patch we need to wait for take it from 30 to 60 ?

Yeah it shows how much of a joke ratings really are
Yes I know most important for a game is gameplay, fun etc but surely technicality should play some role

This game looks average at best, performance is crap, well what can one say with sub 30fps?
Players walk through bushes and they dont react at all, clipping issues everywhere, lack of polish everywhere etc
yet it scores 97!
What happens if it looked like the matrix demo and ran at 60fps as well as all the polish, do they then have to rate it 120/100?

It must be disheartening for other developers to see

Yes the atmosphere looks great and it looks like a game I would want to play, it just doesnt deserve a rating > 90 based on its technical failings

Targeting so many platforms isnt easy + from never was technical top studio, lets wait for df review after day one patch :d

Apparently pc version is horrible as well. Performance is bad game crashes a lot audio bugs out and sometimes game stuck in infinite load loop. With from software games being always such a massive hit and so many fans one may think they will for change hire some highly skilled engineers or prioritize performance but nope. And I also think that this game looks average at best.

This genre isn't for me, but the glowing reviews have my interest piqued. If it was a PlayAnywhere title, I'd be tempted to jump in so at the worst I could load it up on PC and use a Trainer for it. But it's not. So I will wait for GamePass/GamesWithGold/substantial sale.

If this genre is your jam, then it looks like you shouldn't pass this up.

Review from XboxEra where they spent over 60 hours to try out all the various combat styles to see what the game has to offer. Very high ratings with an Unmissable rating. Their review is spoiler free.

They noted what seems to be memory leaks, where restarting got rid of some slowdowns. I quoted the bits related to performance (from a general gamer perspective) after the video.

The game features a quality and performance mode with quality offering a 4k resolution at 30 frames per second, and the performance mode lowering the resolution but aiming for 60 fps. Playing the majority of my time before the day one patch it rarely held that 60fps on either my Series X or S in the open world, especially when it was raining. Playing offline did seem to help quite a bit, but we’ll have to wait and see what that initial patch does to tidy things up.

I am using a variable refresh rate enabled display so the classic FROM software frame-pacing judder didn’t seem to be a thing in either mode. It is by far their best feeling game on console, though I doubt it runs very well on the base Xbox One hardware. My early playthrough was on PC where the game trounced my poor laptop and its RTX 2060. Both PC and Console do appear to suffer from memory leaks, as restarting the game would offer improved performance over things if I had been playing for hours straight. This will be another thing to keep an eye on when it comes to that day one patch.

The reports from the PC version are all over the place. Scrhreier says the opposite. He moved from his PC with a 1080 to his ps5 and says the game ran so poor there he went back on his Pc where it ran better. PC Gamer claims ocassional stutters in the open world after prolonged periods of time. Rock Paper Shotgun made an article with the pc performance and settings actually claiming they're happy with it. That tweet does not correspond to any other pc performance report

Could be memory leaks, as even Jesse@XboxEra picked up on that and mentioned having to restart some times to remove slowdowns.

It does sound like these are unoptimized memory issues.
People often forget about how badly poor memory optimization can result is fall off cliff type performance.

People are quick to point at processing power; but if there is no data to process you’re basically stalled.

Game reviews are a subjective score of how worth playing it is. There's an unlimited supply of 9s and 10s to go around, no one review is taking anything out of another game's pocket. A game with so-so gameplay and amazing tech can be unmissable, and a game with so-so tech and amazing gameplay can be unmissable.

Disappointing to hear the xbox performance from the network test has carried through to the final product. Probably going to get this on xbox so I can grab it ~20 hours early and also out of blind faith in VRR.
