E3 hardware

Well, that's in line with what we were expecting? Or would an E3 announcement this year put us on the wrong side of a process technology gap?

When has a console ever been released at E3 1.5 years ahead of launch?

Well, now that I think of it there was PS3 2005, right? Then 2006...I guess it's not insane? PS3 2005 was different to me though, because 360 was hot and heavy. Right now we have nothing of the sort, if you dont consider Wii U to be true next gen.

I forget Xbox360's e3 rollout schedule, anybody remember? Let alone what earlier consoles like PS2 did...

I dont know, I find it really strange. If this does happen my best guess is very vague teaser videos as some sort if anti-Wii U swipe, and thats about it. Nothing even pretending to be gameplay footage.

I think expectations were somewhere between 2012 and 2014. An E3 announcement this year would be too early for a 2014 console (assuming Christmas type launch rather than early in the year), and possibly too late for a launch of this year. Has any console been revealed only 6 months before it went on market? Vita was announced about a year before release. Maybe 9 months. July to November seem very short work, so I can't see an E3 showing this year releasing hardware before next year, and I think a holiday season is inevitable for a home console if it can be launched then.

It's a long way to E3, there'll inevitably be a bunch of leaks that will make a teaser reveal counter productive. Look what happened with the WiiU last yr between CES and E3.

PS3 was supposed to launch in spring '06 though which should've put it just under a year to launch. My hunch is still that one or both will have an Easter 2013 launch.

microsoft wanted to kill the first xbox as soon as possible, launching the 360 a bi too early
now maybe they'll want to hurt less possible the current gen, being this availability a year or the day after announcement depending on the strategy guru

There wont be sufficient software until Q4 2013 and current consoles need a few price drips before any launches.

They will just get the hype rolling to dreamcast Wii U. The HW difference will be massive with Nintendo being very conservative in every possible way. Nintendo would get smoked if they went toe to toe at 399 cause casuals wont bite at that price. They want to go for 299 and profit on day one which will severely limit what is possible specs

Seem kind of pointless to announce at E3 for miucrososft and sony if they plan on not shipping to later 2013. It only manages to torpedo some of their own sales

No, it also manages to torpedo any Nintendo sales. :devilish:

If both Sony and MS launch at the same time there would certainly be more multiplat titles available for both than if they launched at sepreate times. You'll probably see more PC ports than any other gen too.

As to price drops, this may make for fewer not more. There's no point in doing a price drop now, just wait til shortly before launch to drop. Who's ever buying now will still be buying now without a drop.

Wow are you going to be wrong.

Unless the new Nintendo console is much better than the little I've read about it, I don't see it seriously denting either PS3 or X360 sales. It could be argued it might draw some casuals from people that would potentially buy a Kinect system, but I don't see that happening.

Hell, out of nowhere my Aunt who barely knows how to use a computer and has never played a video game in her entire life (60+ years), suddenly starts asking me about the Kinect. And what games I could recommend to her. I was beyond shocked. It took me a few minutes to fully process that she was asking me about a gaming console when extent of the games she's played is a mahjong matching tiles game. 1 game that she's played off and on for the past 6 years. :p

I really still see no reason for either MS or Sony to launch a next gen console. Sales haven't really slowed for either company. Launching in retaliation of a new Nintendo console lauch which may or may not impact X360/PS3 sales seems a bit rushed.

In the worst case scenario you just hurt your own console sales (why buy current when new is coming soon) and by launching early you end up boosting Nintendo's sales (those lost sales going to Nintendo) far beyond what they would get if you didn't launch a new console.

Only reason I could see for either Sony or MS to announce a new console so early is if the Holiday quarter was horrendously bad for either X360 or PS3. And I just don't see that as having happened.

SB

Quite the opposite, every month in usa 360 and ps3 are setting records.

That's why even 2013 seems aggressive. I can believe ms would target 2013 though to try to get a 1 year jump again. And also because it would be 8 years (!) after 360.

What do you mean sufficient software? Do you remember the 360 launch titles?

There are too much resources tied up to major games still coming in 2012. As you can see like Capcom are yet only looking for people to upgrade their engine. EA just got a guy from Sony MLB team to direct Madden "next-gen". New consoles usually launch with ports but also some actually new IPs

2005 was pretty quiet year for games and PS2/Xbox were generally lacking the PC stuff that benefited 360 launch period. So they were kinda console exclusive

2012 Xbox 720 launch would actually be much worse than the 360 launch. You would have to launch with a bunch of 360 upports but no real exclusives. Wii U will be in this awful spot. Specs will be slightly better but i doubt the OS/Online services will surpass what 360 is offering right now. Nintendo won't even get all the big 2012 games. So you got higher prices, less of the same games and Nintendo 1st party.
