Roofle, Doom3 won best game or whatever last show, and it didn't even make it out over the course of the year. I think it should be illegal to hand out E3 awards to games that aren't even playable. Now id is in the embarrassing position of NOT winning an award for their game in the year it is scheduled to go out on the market.

One has to conclude these awards are nothing but PR BS and spin, if they wanted real awards, they wouldn't give best game awards to titles that are so unfinished they can't even be playtested.

D3 won Best Of Show 2002  Last year was HL2. This year PSP (with no games available) - i think there is a trend here :D

Note on eligibility: Judges were given the option of "hands-on" gameplay time with all nominated games. Games shown in non-playable form were not eligible for awards.

Playable Format
In order to compete, a game be shown in playable format. For the 2004 awards season, playable format is defined as the ability for the judge to manipulate a game in real-time while running on its native platform (i.e. "hands on" gameplay). Games that are only demonstrated on videotape or through screenshots, concept art, rendered movies, pre-scripted (i.e. non-interactive) gameplay sequences, or developer-controlled theater demos are automatically disqualified from consideration in the major award categories. However, non-playable games are still eligible for Special Commendations in Graphics and Sound Design.

Wait a moment, games have to be playable on the actual hardware they are design for to be elegible. Yet PSP, which was not at all playable, can win Best of Show??

When a company can bring what is in effect just a pretty casing and some game videos to E3 and win Game of Show with it you really have to wonder what the hell is going on...

Sounds like American Idol -- where votes can be skewed by its panel of judges ... *

The Game Critics Awards are voted on by representatives from 35 leading media outlets that cover games:

TV Guide * TIME * Newsweek * Entertainment Weekly * Rolling Stone * Business 2.0 * USA Today * Los Angeles Times * The Washington Post * Gannett News Service * San Jose Mercury News * Seattle Post * Hollywood Reporter * Yahoo! * CNN/Money ...

Wasn´t Metal Gear Acid, the Tales of.. game and other titles playable? Not to mention interactive demos running on the machine? That certainly counts as playable.

Why do I get the feeling you´re just saying this because DS didn´t get it, though?

Be fair now. IF nothing on the PSP was indeed playable he has a point. Of course I wonder if for example, Halo2 actually had multiplayer capability (it easily could have - I just wonder if any of the other winners violate their rules as well).

I (and probably most here) personally don't put much faith in an award from a panel like that but it could potentially be a window into a much broader audience, and hence why the PSP could be a success ... because it's just that damn sexy. If this conjecture is correct, then it could also illustrate why the DS will remain a "niche" item and be relegated to only the gaming sector.
