Does the rest of the world care about the Melbourne Cup?

I live here and sure as hell don't.

The Australian media treat it like some form of spiritual event, it's actually granted the status of a public holiday in Melboure (for a horse race ????).

Strange days indeed.

Is this a nobel prize for best city in Australia?
I know Melbourne would win, we are the only city in Australia who don't have the *issues* that Sydney have and we also happen to have less air pollution.
