Display Driver stopped working - help me!

keep doing that see if theres any validity in my theory is the sudden heating of the card/solder issue

ps: your gpu went to 90 with he fan speed at 100% ?

Yep, will try it out again.

No, 92 with 'standard' settings as it was. Afterburner says that the fanspeed was about 65%.

When I play Bordelands, fanspeed is way higher as it is way louder...

Will test more and report back!

Thanks to all, especially Davros, for the comments and help!

Billy

Hm, worked again. I simple started the 720p benchmark test in msi kombustor, which put the temp up to 90 in a controlled manner.

Started borderlands after this, no problems again !

Have to test something, as I reduced PhysX to get better fps for true vault hunter mode. If I remember correctly, this did not have a positive impact on this issue back than. But I will try it with full PhysX again, just to be 100% sure it is not related.

So, before playing Borderlands 2, I always do some GPU warm up using MSI kombustor. I use the 720p first, then the 1080 benchmark.

After this starting directly Borderlands 2...no problem anymore, never got a crash with BL2.

So, does this really indicate a hardware problem, a problem with heat, when to much immediate load from a cold start?

perhaps failing GPU solder joints.

this would be my guess, all my previous Geforces (all from g8x, g9x gen) suffered this kind of problem I think... it was really annoying how random it could be with the crashes, but the only fix that really worked was buying a new card... trying different things with the rest of the PC had some effects... but it would ultimately have the drivers crashing, so I tested the same PC with more than one card from AMD and it worked stable... :???:

I've seen a few reports of people successfully solving issues related to solder on their cards using a oven at around 150-200 C for a few minutes

Yeah it's the NV bumpgate issue that goes back to G7x. But I thought we were past that now. I've had problems with 8800GT myself and it is display driver crashes among other things that happen.

My 8400GS (G86) seems to be crapping out, it gave me corruption in firefox, then I found out it didn't give temperature monitoring, then a total freeze with a small rectangle of garbage on display. Also its second display output had been dead already.
On top of that the lack of fan control makes it a noisy piece of kit.

so I'm looking for any used nvidia replacement. I'm almost buying a geforce 610 lol.
I have to buy cheap thermal paste for the CPU too but the place I would go went bankrupt, getting it for 2 euros rather than 5 euros was nice :p

Which reminds me that in addition to 8800GT trouble, I got a dead 8500GT that was temporarily resurrected by baking. I also baked a friend's 7900M GTX once. Bumpgate!

Don't bake with the fan still attached, I did with another card and something melted in it, it was completely stuck. This must have been my first 8400GS.
The card also didn't work at all :p. I remember heating at 200°C for maybe quite too long. Maybe the card had been killed because of something else than bumpgate.

Go too hot and stuff can fall off the board because the solder gets too liquified. Baking may also bulge electrolytic capacitors since you will be well beyond the usual temp limit. And yeah plastic thingies may melt.

The 8500 had been operating at crazy temps with a dead fan for an unknown amount of time. The PCB was even discolored. I suspected it was fried but baking it brought it back. I even stress tested it with games. Sadly after about 6 months it started crashing the driver just running Aero.

Baking really is not much of a solution in my experience since it has never lasted long term for me.

Ok, so now I have a work around which seems to let me play games without much problems at the moment. But I think that this will not last very long. So I wonder myself, if I should buy a new graphics card?

And if yes...well, I am a PC hardware noob: which one is best?? (prepares to get yelled at).

I am only interested in NVIDIA cards, it seems to me that they have less problems with games than the AMDs. Especially the RAGE debacle comes to my mind and PhysX support, which I love by the way!

A GTX 680 is rather expensive. Are the other 6XX worth buying?
I am interested in the 6er series because they enable TXAA which I think is super cool.
So, which 6xx offers good bang for the buck?

Or should I say who cares for 6er, best value offers a 580?

Thanks for the help guys,
Billy

Perhaps your 480 wont have problems if used as a dedicated physx card ?
As for best card look at some benchmarks, look at the prices bobs your uncle...

first of all the geforce 670 is about 90% the performance of 680. it's a lot cheaper and you have the benefits of lower heat too.
then, a gtx 580 is worth about a radeon 7870, which is about or slightly better than a geforce 660. so I believe you can buy pretty any of the geforce 6 and get something usable (lowest one worth mentioning is the gtx 650 which I feel is nice, but for low power, low budget, low resolution)

Thanks! So I just looked around for a 670. But even in this case there are several millions choices available.

Is EVGA or ZOTAC a good choice?
After reading about MSI and their "tuning" practice, I don't want to buy that.

And even if I, e.g., choose EVGA. There are different variants of the GPUs...with overclocking it seems. Is it worth it buying an improved version of a 670?

Thanks,
Billy

My new baby is a beast! The only game so far which I cannot max is Crysis 2...maybe my old CPU, who knows! Most important: no display driver stopped working shit so far. Directly launched games. It is really brutal how tec evolves: GPU makes hardly any noise, temp is 70 celcius instead of 90...lol at my ol GTX480!

So, after one evening playing around with no issues so far: it really seems that my GTX480 was the problem and is damaged.

Now I want to try out a game with TXAA!
