DevStation 2006

OSD, Cross media bar, Game Saves, Controllers, Peripherals, Bluetooth, USB, Hard Drive (James Burns)

It's under the agendas section, but what interests me is the Cross media bar. So is the new OS style based off on PSP's interface?

Err it's a developer event anyone attending will have signed an NDA prior.
Yeah, I realized you have to already have had to sign a PS3 NDA prior to that, was hoping the specific info given there wouldn't be under NDA though, ah well :(

Uttar

There will also be entertainment on the evening of March 1.
..maybe someone could infiltrate the event when they're entertaining themselves, I'm sure many NDA's could be easily broken when they're under influence.... any volunteers....... around London area............ anyone spring to mind who could be fit for the job?

Havok - Havok Complete 3.3 - SPU Utilisation

Would love to see that one :( The Procedural Geometry one also looks very interesting. There's a tiny little bit more info on the registration page - apparently the latter presentation will describe a FFT-based water simulation on the SPUs.

Playstation SceneGraph (PSSG) also sounds interesting. Was there something like that back in the early days of PS2 or PSP, or is this new?

If I can infiltrate the conference, I won't be tied to any NDAs...
There must be a technician or cleaner I can knock out and swap clothing with! :devilish:

...or knock down the stripper that's coming there for the "evening entertainment" and take her clothes, you could even earn some money while there ;)

It's described as "a PS3 optimised cross-platform graphics engine and tool-chain." rather than just a scenegraph.

Cross platform technologies and tools are a new thing for them - they've only really dabbled in scene-graph stuff before.

I'm pretty sure they'd see the difference........

Cheers. I guess there must be PS2 and PSP optimised versions too, then.

Well I'm quite confused then :D What does that mean in this context?

Other platforms... You know - non-Sony ones.

(I think I hear the sound of a Ninja prowling on my roof... excuse me...)

I see, thanks.

PC is about the only platform I can think of that Sony also devs for (through SOE).

I can't imagine the other console manufacturers licensing Sony to make an engine for their systems, although I can see why Sony might want to, if it achieved adoption. Basically they could make sure the PS3 version always runs better (hence PS3-optimised) :p Smart, but I couldn't see the others standing for it..

Well they don't need a license to write something that happens to compile in a variety of environments and would be easy to port to "something else" given a compliant compiler and APIs that offered similar features to the standard ones they already have implementations for...

A low level library would be tricky to make portable, but a higher-level engine is quite feasible (just provide portable implementations or abstractions alongside the PS3 specific code). As you say, it's always going to run best on PS3, but I doubt Sony mind that...

I suppose if that was what they wanted to do, this would be a hypothetical way of doing it...

Yeah, was thinking this. Devs would do the porting.

I wonder how many devs would actually take them up on such an offer, though. I guess Sony would be betting on many devs using PS3 as their lead platform, and hoping they'd use this to port to other systems..
