DevStation 2006

Rumored PS3 conference?

Still a rumor. I need to find a slide with the "PS3 Timeline". Kaz Harai has been commenting about it in random articles since last December. Its supposed to be a more laid back conference for the "Playstation Fans".

Think they may have an interface on par with XBL? I would think it must be something significant for them to mention it... unless they're refering to a dev environment of some sort...

I think they metioned before they were going to be running a realtime OS on the system, probably a stripped down version of linux to handle the interface and media features

am I the only one thinking this is the rumored Feb. conference, I doubt they will have 2 back to back, unless one is public and one is just for developers, either way I'm happy we may finally get some real news

Mike Kavallierou
Director
Mike has been back at SCEE since May 2003, having spent the previous 2 and a half years at Microsoft working on Xbox and Xbox Live. His first industry job was also at SCEE working on PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in developer support up until the day of European launch. He has a great collection of NDAs from his previous employers, and his current focus is network technologies on all platforms.

Mike is going to talk about PS3 networking.

This is interesting. Found in the speakers section.

Unless something is different this year (and I can't see anything on the site to indicate this), Devstation is a closed event, developers only - no press, no games, just technical talks.

In fact yes, the registration page clearly states this.

So as much as us developers might get some information out of this event, I wouldn't expect to see anything posted about it.

I guess the most you can do is look at the speakers and talks and try to infer stuff from that :)

The grapevine [note: RUMOURMILL] claims that the persistent OS gets an SPE entirely to itself.

indeed.

so is this one:
Micha joined SCEE in early 2002 and has been applying his networking skills and knowledge in the area of online console gaming ever since. His current focus is integrating middleware with the SCEE Networking Gaming Service as well as working on new network-related technologies both for established consoles as well as the upcoming PS3.

Micha is going to present a low-level overview of PS3 networking.

Cool because the most impressive thing about the Xbox 360 is the persistent interface over all games. If Sony can implement something of similar quality, everyone is in for a treat :)

Everyone shoud give their predictions on the PS3 online plan.

I predict free online gaming, using a peer to peer service with a basic friends list across all games, voice chat and a common backend for the networking code.

Just the core services users need, but for free, it will be a good competitor to XBLive.

I would like to guess that Sony will have a marketplace area with downloadable content, music, videos etc, but...I just don't see it getting implemented when the dust settles.

The CES announcements regarding their CONNECT service covers that area. They're expanding it from just music to PSP integration with downloadable game content, movies, and TV Shows. That logically should lend itself very nicely to the PS3 when it arrives.

Yeah, It will be interesting to see predictions everyone has, and then the outcomes.

James will giving a wide-ranging presentation on game saves, Bluetooth, USB and much much more!
I think in the future, maybe not at launch, they will incorporate a video conferencing/chat system into the OS with the eyetoy. Maybe this guy James will speak on the eyetoy or other accessories?

i think the biggest item here is having some type of friend list, one common ID. To me that is the biggest draw of XBL. If it's free, that would be awesome.

Feb PS event, Feb EA (PS3/MoH:A) conference, March DevStation...seems pretty packed for news.

Whats February?
My guess is PlayStation Festival 2006.

They had PS Festival 2000 on Feb 18, 2000 - a Japanese event, first time with playable PS2 games (open to the public (they sold tickets)). It was confirmed by Sony in early January 2000 so we should know soon if thats whats coming.

Its definitely going to be a press event of some sort and there will be information released. Hopefully its a public event too but eh, maybe not.
