Dead Rising demo today?

Scored the last public copy at our EB here in PA. I must say I hate time limits, and the fact that you keep getting called with new missions every so often while the others expire is really frustrating. Theres no way to do every single mission..that annoys me :\

That said..This game is a blast!!!

For what it's worth this game is sold out across Edmonton, at least all of the EB games are out, man I didn't expect it to be that popular.
I went into mine local EB today and the new kid at the counter gave me the 'you should have pre-ordered' line, when the fact is they should have bothered to order a reasonable number more than they get pre-orders for as instead I just went across the road and got the game at Best Buy.

Regardless, the game rocks, and I have friends who just showed up to play so I'm off to do that now. :D

Its such a shame theres no co-op in this..such a huge opportuniity missed. I can dream of driving the hummer while my friend mounts the machine gun..*sigh*

Ya really, these guys need to start ordering more games, they sell out of just about everything 360 when it comes out. Usually I just call the day before and reserve a copy, but I thought I'd be ok with DR.

Went to futureshop but they hadn't recieved it yet, I'll probably pick it up tonight, bout time!!

Picked the game up yesterday. Got it from a local Best Buy. It was the last copy and it was only about 2pm. They received 40 copies.

Game is much more entertaining then the demo. The pacing in the beginning with cut scenes is a tad annoying.

BUT...I very much enjoyed the initial fly in on the helicopter. You get to check out the town from above and take pictures of zombies for the first time. Some classic stuff!!

I was wondering this same thing when trying to track this down yesterday. Sometimes I think Gamestop Inc. is purposely trying to create a pre-order "culture" by not having enough extra on launch day. I can see where this benefits that chain because preordering is a clear differentiator between them and the other big stores.

(What they need is for customers to be able to pre-order online for pickup at a local store. The only reason i didnt bother to preorder was that i didnt have a reason to be near the EB Games in over a month.)

As kyleb did, I just went across to the BB and bought it there. However, I would rather not deal with the hit-and-miss nature with those large stores having new games on the floor on Day 1.

I wonder if in the long run they're biting off their noses to spite their faces. Does anyone know what the other benefits are from Gamestop's perspective in securing a lot of preorders?

The funny thing is you can just call in, 1 or 2 days before release, give them your name and reserve a copy. Costs nothing, and I've done it 2 or 3 times, so it's not like they're forcing pre-orders. I snagged GRAW and Oblivion that way, both sold out day 1.

I agree, and I loved the demo. I was really worried about the actual game, but no more. (The save system sucks.)

But I disagree with the cut scene comment. The dialog is crisp and very well acted. I've sat through them several times and I'm still amazed at the animation and voice acting. For example, in one scene Brad says "Well, shooting him would be the best solution." That line is excellent dialog but can be murdered by poor voice acting. The game nails it perfectly. There are countless examples of similarly well-delivered lines, and it's only the occasional flub that makes you realize how great the dialog actually is.

 Either this was an intentional change or you've been playing too much Dead Rising. It's "cut off your nose to spite your face." Not bite.

I refuse to pick up games from them anymore since the absolutely rude response I got last time when I was looking for a copy of Oblivion on release day. I walk into the store and approach the three guys behind the counter.

Me: You guys have Oblivion?
Employee: You preorder?
Me: No.
Employee (dismissively): Pre-orders only.

And this is the part that completely pissed me off: all three employees then completely dismissed me, as if I wasn't even in the store anymore. As a customer, I felt stupid for even asking (which was their intent, I'm sure). I mumbled, "oh, ok, cool, whatever" and walked out. And like everyone else has said, I went straight over to Best Buy and bought it. Same as Dead Rising yesterday.

Yeah, also I got shafted like that by EB with Quake 4 for the PC on it's launch day, and between that and Dead Rising I've decided that EB is no longer my first stop. I liked to support them because they are a game store and stock a wider selection than most places; but I don't support pre-ordering products and that is obviously how they want to do their business, so it seems I am better off doing my shopping someplace else.

Oh, and the game rocks. I'm a bit dissapointed in the saving system as it could really stand to have autosaves between loads, but I expect to get a lot of fun out of this game regardless.

Anybody want to give a more indepth review of the game other than 'the save game system sucks' for those of us who are unfortunate enough not to own a 360 yet?

By the way.. Dead Rising is supposed to have free content available on marketplace.

New outfits and stuff I think.

There's no multiplayer of any kind in this game, is there?

Here's my review: This game is the essence of fun. There's an immense amount of exploration available in the game, side missions that keep you interested if exploration gets boring, and when you're bored with side missions there's an intriguing main story well written and acted. The polish on the game is impressive, with little details getting developer attention, such as throwing a gumball machine at a zombie and it breaks open, causing surrounding zombies to slip and fall on the spilled gumballs.

The game is difficult, with boss battles being challenging. And yet the save mechanics, where my stats carry over after death if I choose to start from scratch, means that if I get stuck, I just move on and figure I'll try again next time.

It has been a long time since a game could put a smile on my face, and this one does it through humor and through sheer enjoyment of playing.

The save system is damn frustrating :devilish:

I guess it adds alot to the gameplay though, like when you're on your last tick of life, trying to make it to a save point and you know you haven't saved for 40 minutes, you get pretty damn excited. Till you die, and then that just SUCKS!! grrr...I had to shut it off last night in frustration.

That's probably a good thing in the long run though, better it be challenging than easy.

btw: is the only way to rescue hostages to bring em all the way back to the warehouse and onto the roof? Has anyone manage to successfully escort more than 2 people at a time?? The escort missions seem really hard, especially at night.

Thanks for the review.. But you seem to like the save mechanics, and Scoob seems to hate them.

Can you explain in more detail how it works? I assume there's save points you have to get to in order to save... I'm confused as to why the system is frustrating?

And it's kinda important to me, frustrating save mechanics are one of the things that will stop me from playing a game entirely.. Like Scoob said.. I've turned off games and never turned them back on again because the save game mechanics were just so damn stupid.

From the IGN review I linked here
Though the game allows players to save in any mall bathroom and the security safe room, there's only one slot. Each time the game is saved, it overwrites the previous, meaning there's no going back. There's also an option to simply save Frank's level progression and wipe the progress through the 72 Hour mode, allowing it to be restarted with the augmented level and abilities. Combined with the compulsory story segments, this kind of save structure ensures that players will miss tons of what's available in Dead Rising, essentially forcing a second and third play-through. An option to save in multiple slots would have been appreciated. As it is, the invisible hand of the developer is often felt throughout Dead Rising. It shoves players along the narrative ride when all they want to do is get off and explore.

The system is frustrating because it's hard to get to a savepoint sometimes, there are only 4 or 5 that are spread out around the mall, and that forces you to replay long stretches of the game over again if you die at the wrong spot.

Mind you, I've only put in a couple hours, so I'll probably get better at the game, and stats like run speed, life, and attack strength all increase, which should make it less of a hassle as the game goes on.

Some reviews complain that if you save in the wrong place, with not enough time to get to your next case file that could basically end your game. I don't see this as a problem through, as the mission has a visible timer, always onscreen, which turns from blue to yellow to red, so you should now exactly how much time you have left, and it should be pretty easy not to get caught.
