Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) (SARS-CoV-2) [2020]

Any taxes in Antarctica? Plenty of space to live down there.
give it 20 years that will be prime real estate, for the US lib party
for fear of conjuring up nesh (whoops too late) :)
but I heard many years ago (no idea how maybe in a book or on some 80s TV documentary)
that the US has a base at the south pole (and since they were not early enuf > 100 years ago to claim any of antartica, that they dont recognize any other country claims to that continent) , thus when a USA plane takes off from the USA south pole base it first does a loop through every other countries territory, just to say fuck you.

Now is this true?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A family is dealing with the tragic loss of their 16-year-old who died from COVID-19.

A spokesperson for Wolfson Children’s Hospital said the teen died Thursday. The hospital is not releasing details, citing patient privacy laws.

But a statement said in part: “The death of a child is always tragic, and our hearts are with the family as they grieve this loss.”

This heartbreaking news is a reminder that COVID-19 poses a risk to children.

If one accepts, for example, that the hypotheisis that covid was actually an accidental leak from Wuhan's gain of function research, which seems to now be accepted by most as the most likely origin by most experts, it serves as a perfect picture of the dangers of big-state. China is far from an organizational utopia, but I don't think that happens despite the large and centralized nature of its government, but as a predictable consequence. Covid could possibly not have gotten as out of hand, had the leak occured in a less bureocratic country, since more freedom leads to more whistleblowing and honesty/transparency. It's pretty obvious China authories tried sweeping this fuck-up under the rug to cover their asses, while the problem got much worse than it needed to.
1. You are (most likely wrong) about the lab leak from wuhan
2. you are completely right about in places like the CCP that ppl are afriad to report fuckups thus they become larger than they should be
3. you are wrong about MOAR government == wrong, cause as we have seen from the covid experiment, when the shit actually hits the fan, MOAR government = winner, FREEDOM == LOSER (but hey you died a free man, and unfortunately you also killed your neighbour)

BTW #2 is bigger than maybe it looks like on the list, this is one of the most important things that exists, free thinking == new science

to be honest I am a bit annoyed that kids are forced to wear masks in some countries. We adults can take it easier. But kids are being deprived and limited a lot socially. Its sn important age for the development of their personalities and skills. Its also an important age to develop their immune systems that will help then for the rest of their lives. I understand that they might carry the various but all factors should be considered.

What happens to their development if they get sick?

Or if they infect their parents and other adults around them and they get severe disease?

Because I believe there are such cases, kids get "bad cold" symptoms while their parents end up hospitalized.

According to experts and based on the data, younger ages have nothing to worry about unless they have other serious health issues which is a tiny group. In which case, masks or not its a risk just to be in school or outside,
Kids will benefit from a stronger immune system they will carry for the rest of their lifetimes. Kids go through it a lot easier.
Doctors arent worried about that age group. They worry about the older ones and those with other health issues.
The risk of dying or carrying health issues for the rest of their life times is so small, that the possibility of is less than having serious side effects from vaccination. Both tiny percentages btw. And this is why doctors recommend vaccination of kids above 12 only if they have health problems.

As for the second, it depends on the parent, what adults are willing to sacrifice for their own protection or if they are willing to take the extra precautions.
Also if they are right about the vaccines limiting significantly hospitalizations and the possibility of death, why worry? Get the shot and free the kids.

Yeah, fuck those sick kids. Tough luck on them for being poorly in the first place, eh?

Here in the UK, around 1 in 200 kids with confirmed cases (so obviously not including asymptomatic or mild, undiagnosed cases) are being hospitalised. In July, there were over 1,000 hospitalizations of children and a handful of deaths. Long Covid (i.e. symptoms lasting 12 weeks seem to be running around 10 to 30% of cases and there are already thousands of children who have been suffering debilitating affects for over a year.

With this in mind, the relaxation of any restrictions in schools from the return in September is mind-boggling. No masks, no distancing, no additional ventilation, no air filtration as is required in many other countries. In fact, Public Health England are practically gaslighting the public, recently quoting studies which claim to show Covid doesn't spread among children in school which were carried out last year before Alpha was around, let alone Delta! They are also talking down the risks of Long Covid based on another poorly designed study which directly contradicts the hard data available from the ONS survey!

Latest news is that schools don't need to take any steps with outbreaks until either 10% or 5 of pupils in the setting show symptoms. For a class of more than 30, that could be 4 cases before they consider taking action. From what we know of the spread of Delta, this could mean that most of that class would therefore be infected.

PHE seem to be working hand in hand with the JCVI who haven't yet recommended that ages 12 to 15 receive vaccines, even though the regulator authorised the use months ago. Claims that not enough safety data is available seem strange when tens of millions of doses have been given in these age groups in other countries. Note, the argument that these does would be better given to the vulnerable in other countries isn't untrue, but we're not shipping these vaccines overseas so it's not a possibility in this case anyway.

As an example of the way in which PHE are operating, the call for air filtration in classrooms as a mitigation has been met with a grudging agreement to carry out an RCT in 30 schools which will read out in 2022. I've seen quotes of a cost of around £3 per pupil to install portable filters in classrooms, something which would improve air quality regardless of efficacy against the spread of Covid (and there is plenty of evidence of efficacy already). With the way Delta spreads and with the lack of restrictions, most kids in English schools will have been exposed to the virus by Christmas which makes the RCT utterly worthless. As PHE well know.

It is my view that the UK government has decided that it is best to get as many children infected as possible before the winter comes so the underfunded health system doesn't collapse. Those poor children who get seriously ill are just collateral damage. Hence the messaging/gaslighting that there is nothing to worry about and the pandemic is all but over.

New SARS-CoV-2 variants have changed the pandemic. What will the virus do next? | Science | AAAS (sciencemag.org)

“A year on I’ve been proven pretty much wrong on all of it,” Holmes says.

New studies — Nuffield Department of Medicine (ox.ac.uk)

Key findings from the study:

  • Obtaining two vaccine doses remains the most effective way to ensure protection against the COVID-19 Delta variant of concern dominant in the UK today.
  • With Delta, Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines still offer good protection against new infections, but effectiveness is reduced compared with Alpha.
  • Two doses of either vaccine still provided at least the same level of protection as having had COVID-19 before through natural infection; people who had been vaccinated after already being infected with COVID-19 had even more protection than vaccinated individuals who had not had COVID-19 before.
  • However, Delta infections after two vaccine doses had similar peak levels of virus to those in unvaccinated people; with the Alpha variant, peak virus levels in those infected post-vaccination were much lower.
Other findings:

  • A single dose of the Moderna vaccine has similar or greater effectiveness against the Delta variant as single doses of the other vaccines.
  • Two doses of Pfizer-BioNTech have greater initial effectiveness against new COVID-19 infections, but this declines faster compared with two doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca. Results suggest that after four to five months effectiveness of these two vaccines would be similar – however, long-term effects need to be studied.
  • The time between doses does not affect effectiveness in preventing new infections, but younger people have even more protection from vaccination than older people.
Symptoms and SARS-CoV-2 positivity in the general population in the UK

  • Within the COVID-19 Infection Survey, recruiting representative households across the UK general population, SARS-CoV-2-associated symptoms varied by viral variant, vaccination status and demographics. However, differences are modest and do not currently warrant large-scale changes to targeted testing approaches
Full vaccination and a Delta breakthrough offer the best protection against Covid-19.

On a related note : Anti-maskers try SCUBA diving - It doesn't end well :D
Actually as part of my PADI open water diver certification we were required to take off our mask and all other equipment underwater and leave it at the deep end of a pool at the bottom, then swim down and put it all on without coming up.

Putting on and taking off a mask underwater isn't as hard as it seems. Not really inline with your point, but it's a vivid memory from 15 year old me who was freaking out a bit during that bit of the test. (I was the youngest in my scuba class by about a decade, I took them with my father)

Also libertarians are just entitled people who think they earned their way in to society and don't understand why others aren't so fortunate, but in much meaner terms. I'm not a big fan, seems like another way of say, "It's good to be selfish, fuck off if you have a problem with it".
