Concept PS3 controller

Now that I look at the controller more closely, there actually might be one thing that explains the oddish shape.
The shape looks like you'll hold it with your palms pointetd a little bit more downwards than you do with DS2, putting your wrists to a more natural position.

This gave me an idea! They should make the controller so that it'll be quite concave from the middle, so that your hands would be at their optimal rest position while using the controller, palms facing even more downwards. Youd still use the crosspad and analog stick with thumb, the analog would be at the same place as now, but the crosspad and the other four buttons ont the right would be at a vertical angle towards the analog sticks! They would then be closer to the analogs while at the same time being at a more comfortable position, but not interfering with using the analogs.
It's hard to explain what I have in mind, this explanation must not have got through what I think.
.....I'll make a drawing of my ideal PS3 controller! Wait a minute.....

Edit:
Here

It was more difficult to draw than I thought, so it did not turn out quite as well as I hoped, but the general idea shoud be clear enough.

It's not about wether you'll hit anything by mistake or not (though that is a complete non-issue in of itself), it's about ergonomics. Ie, that the thumb, when resting and the hand is holding a controller, is pointing towards the location of the D-pad on a DS2 controller, when most games instead use the left analog stick as the primary mode of control. Thus the player has to bend down the thumb merely to rest it on the stick in its neutral position, and bend even more to tilt the stick downwards...

So are you saying a better layout would reduce strain on the thumb or that a different layout would be more intuitive or somehow make you more efficient at using the controller?

I don't have any stress problems with the DS2. If anything though, I don't use the right stick as much as I could because I have to use the buttons more frequently and right stick functions are usually optional or not essential to playing the game.

I don't care what it looks like, but if they are not going to put the left analog stick where the cross pad is, that thing is going to suck like DS2 sucks at playing fps-games and in a lesser extend racers, it really doesn't matter that much if you are only using the left stick, but when both are used, it feels horrible, that has to change. I'm suprised I haven't seen any third party controllers for PS2 which would have the layout I described. Please Sony make it so...

why is that better? just asking.. i like both layout actually
but prefer the DS2 over the BIG xbox joypad.
but the S controller is already much better, i think the x360 version of the xbox controller will be very good.
but i want them thinner and lighter. holding a big chunk of something in my hands i dont feel very confortable.

right now i use a logitech wireles PS2 . i like it a lot!
wireles is the way to go

I just think that the spot where the D-pad id in DS", is the most natural plaze to keep my thumb, the overall desing of DS2 however makes it feel weird if it would be there...

I prefer DS2 when playing games like Tekken, I actually prefer the big Xbox joypad over the small one, for Xbox games.

I agree, same for me. I can't understand that some people are having stress problems with the DS2.

are you guys big or small ? My younger sister has no problem with the ds2 but my father and I get hand cramps all the time and the fins dig into our palms . But he is 6'2 and i'm 6'4 . My friend bill is 6'8 and wont touch a ps2 controller with a 10 foot pole his hand starts to hurt after a few minutes .

I'm about 6'5 and got pretty big hands. Only time I've gotten a cramp is after a 6 hour tournament of PES4.

I guess it has a lot more to do how hard you press buttons and how much energy you use pressing. I've seen a few friends of mine who just push so hard and it makes the blood completely drain from their fingers heheh and they become all white. No wonder they cramp up fast.

I always hold the controller loosely and press pretty softly (depending on game of course). Never had a problem really.

JESUS!!!! You guys must live up a beanstalk or something! ;)
...just kidding. I'm 6'2, which doesn't exactly qualify as giant, but I find the dual shock quite comfortable.

So far the only thing that worries me about the DS3(aside from looking at it) is how well it handles when held in the fighting game position; meaning the thumb is placed under the controller allowing the fingers to work the buttons.

hmm interesting . Perhaps you've just gotten very used to the controller ?

Nah, always liked the PS controllers, from day one.

I really like the GC's also. The Controller S for Xbox is also pretty good but I absolutely hated the original Xbox controller. That's probably the worst controller I've ever held. The 360 looks good.

I don't like that PS3 controller. However, I'd like to see a similar shaped one that has, say, only two or three buttons beside the right stick, the d-pad a bit closer to the left stick and six or eight buttons on its bottom side, one for each finger.

People were already dismissing the X360 controller before trying it, and according to people who've tried it, it's actually very comfortable...

I don't recall anyone dismissing the X360 controller. The only one dismissing it was Guden because of the ugly glossy white finish of the prototype.
