Concept PS3 controller

I must say, that after looking at it a bit longer next to that sexy black PS3 unit... I'm beginning to like it.....

I like it. Especially the two mini-sticks, and the new ergonomy (It has to be proven :)) that sames quite good.

Try your own. Put your hands in your Dual Shock. You will feel that the sticks don't fit with the sape of your natural position. And that this position is just the same that the new controller is suitable for.

I hate it. It looks like this old MS pc controller I used to have that you would control by tilting it. It looks much too goofy for my taste and having those sticks on the same axis is a big mistake.

I don't care what it looks like, but if they are not going to put the left analog stick where the cross pad is, that thing is going to suck like DS2 sucks at playing fps-games and in a lesser extend racers, it really doesn't matter that much if you are only using the left stick, but when both are used, it feels horrible, that has to change. I'm suprised I haven't seen any third party controllers for PS2 which would have the layout I described. Please Sony make it so...

I've never had any problems playing fps with the DS2 because of the analog-sticks. In fact, I wouldn't want them to swap the digital pad with the left analog-stick, but that's just IMO of course. ;)

It's visually striking, more so than other controllers. Watch it win industrial design awards and end up at a museum exhibit.

But who knows how it fares ergonomically with that long design?

I'm used to using the analog sticks in the DS2 configuration. I understand people who prefer the left stick up where the D-pads are, since that is the primary means of navigation.

But in many games, the D-pad is used for less-frequently used functions like weapons selection. Seems like you'd be more likely to inadvertently hit something on the D-pad if it's below the left stick.

3rd-party controllers probably mimic the DS2 layout because it is the most popular. There were adapters to use the DS2 on the Xbox and GC but no such adapters to use the Controller S or the GC controller on the PS2.

But since the beginning of time the main pad/stick has been in that place where PS2:s d-pad is. Think about if SNES-pads cross pad would be in the same place where DS's left analog stick is, it just isn't the best place to put your main controller device, when first DS came it didn't matter that much, because allmost all games were controlled with d-pad, and it was in the best spot, how come they didnt' put that where the left stick is now?, because it's just not good place for anything! :D. Ofcourse it's just IMO.

I really don't like the design. I can't see how it can be comfortable while gaming. On the other hand, the design probably didn't come out of nowhere so there must be some ergonomical benefits to it.

I don't mind the DS2, I think its a good controller, imo. The only FPS I've played with the DS2 was Red Faction and that was a while ago. Even then I didn't find it that awkward.

For the PS3 controller, maybe they can lose the "boomerang" look....that is all, I got nothing to complain about :p

I'm pretty sure Batman has one.

Seriously though, I'm sure they'll change it. I've heard nothing good about it (except in this thread). Even the new XBox controller has had better feedback, and that's saying something.

Good point Dr. Evil... maybe I am mislead by my fetish for symmetry.

I suppose why I feel better with the DS2 for playing first-person-shooters is because usually, you use both analog-sticks and both are in the same place (you're not going to use the top buttons, as the triggers are the R1/R2 buttons). It just fits nicely IMO having both thumbs in the same position, using the left one to aim and the right one to walk...

I'd prefer it if they just took the dualshock controller and made the handles slightly larger/longer and repositioned the top buttons a little.

its a step up from the ds2 but i don't think its going to fit my hands well so hopefully they change it

Is it just me or do the buttons (x circle , square ) look like they are going into the controler instead of rising out of it

This is just silly. Have you ever held a gamecube controller and hit the D-pad by mistake when you wanted to use the left stick instead?

It's not about wether you'll hit anything by mistake or not (though that is a complete non-issue in of itself), it's about ergonomics. Ie, that the thumb, when resting and the hand is holding a controller, is pointing towards the location of the D-pad on a DS2 controller, when most games instead use the left analog stick as the primary mode of control. Thus the player has to bend down the thumb merely to rest it on the stick in its neutral position, and bend even more to tilt the stick downwards...

I made a quick comparison image of PS2 and PS3 controllers.
They might not be very accurately in scale, but gives something to imagine how the PS3 controller ergonomics would be compared to DS2.
To me it looks like Sony would need to redesign the PS3 controller, it looks like your hands would need to be awkwardly angled to hold it, not to mention the shoulder buttons look like being too far from reach.
Fortunately this is just a concept, so it's safe to assume the final will have some changes at least.
I do kinda like the overall look though, but I just can't imagine it being very ergonomic.
The main thing that makes me doubt is that the handles extend too much outwards, forcing your hands to a very different position than when using the DS2.
A DS2 with just longer more contoured handles but the controls at mainly the same positions would probably feel better.

why is that better? just asking.. i like both layout actually
but prefer the DS2 over the BIG xbox joypad.
but the S controller is already much better, i think the x360 version of the xbox controller will be very good.
but i want them thinner and lighter. holding a big chunk of something in my hands i dont feel very confortable.

right now i use a logitech wireles PS2 . i like it a lot!
wireles is the way to go

Don't mean to be rude... But shouldn't we reserve judgement until we actually... have the thing in our hands...?

People were already dismissing the X360 controller before trying it, and according to people who've tried it, it's actually very comfortable...

Do you judge if a bed feels comfortable or not over pictures? No, you jump on it... And do all sorts of things on it.
