Cheap remote included in x360 preimum

Heh, certainly I am not going to be happy about this one..they put overpromising and underdelivering to a whole new degree. That fancy bundle is what Xbox360 was supposed to be and what they were promised...Xbox core system looks like just another console with fancy graphics without anything revolutionary. Anyone with a right mind will pick up premium version...lol..picking up core version would be just flat out dumb. I hope MS pay dearly for this so console manufacturers no longer adapt this strategy.

Let me ask you a question.

When the PS3 hits the shelves at $299.99 with only a single controller and no HDD, are you going to feel the same way about it? Because at best, that's what it's going to be, but there is a chance the price will be much higher with nothing more offered out of the box. If the price is higher, will you feel even more ripped off by Sony? And then what? Buying the Revolution is all that's left, or you can stop gaming.

I guess my real question is, are you mad because you actually are getting ripped off, or are you mad because you thought you were going to get the deal of the century, and damn, it turned out to be the same deal everyone else has.

If the PS3 hits the shelves at $299 with one controller and no HDD it would be a significantly better deal than the X360 core, if the following assumptions pan out:

1) Inlcudes high-def capability (connect to hi-def TVs)
2) Inlcudes Blue-ray playback
3) Backward compaitble OOTB
4) Can use any number of flash storage cards I have lying around my house...probably wouldn't need to buy a memory card
5) Includes Wi-Fi built in.

Now, I don't think the PS3 will hit at $299...or if it does it would not include all of the above. But if it does, it'd be a much better deal. (Hardware wise).

That alone cinches it for me. Built in Wi-Fi (like how some of the Xbox fans felt they needed the HDD) I feel the same for the Wi-Fi...I want wireless out of the box with both the controllers and the console.

Me too...which is my MS's SKUs (and pricing of the WiFi adapter) disappoint me. If MS had done the following:

Core system $299
1) wireless controller instead of wired, and throw in a memory card
2) Priced WiFi adapter accessory at $50-75

or

Premium system: $399
1) Remove headset and remote, add in WiFi

I may have gone for either of those two. I'll just have to wait until prices drop I guess.

Yeah..I could have cared less about the Headset and Remote (especially ever since jvd made the thread about the remote being a "cut down" version of the actual remote. They really, really really really should have had Wi-Fi out of the box. Nothing like opening up (not that i've done this before....but I would love it) your consoles box...setting up to the TV and plugging it in to the power outlet...and setting up the Wi-Fi connection right after you mess around with the UI....finally being online in a few minutes..without having to route a wire to my Router a couple of rooms away.

I have been getting the feeling that many people who think they are upset about "lies" or "misleading" or "split-markets" or whatever, are subconsciously coming from this place you have pointed out.

Let's face it, we all talked ourselves into believing that it was going to be all this new cool stuff in the box for $299. MS NEVER said that. They are giving us everything they said but for $399.

Anyone that thinks SONY is going to be putting all of their high end tech in a box for less than $399 is "misleading" themselves again. I don't doubt that Sony will do split SKUS (or a bundle) also and I would not rule out $449-$499.

MS mislead people in respect to what they should expect in the base model xbox 360. Price is not the problem here.

For months, ever since E3, and according to their website it has been very simple: 20GB HDD, Compoonent cables and 1 wireless controller.

Now they're backtracking by playing stupid word games like calling the premium version "XBOX 360 Standard Version" and the cheap package "X360 Core Version" so they can say "look our 'standard' version has all those things we promised!"

Like do they really think their fanbase is so retarded they will believe this? This comes right out of some marketing guys brain and completely disrespects the fan base. The standard version is the cheapeast version, and it simply is not what you promised us at E3 and afterwards. MS can play word games all they want it doesn't matter.

That said, the $399 package is a really good deal, so hopefully peole won't have too much of a problem buying it.

See Scooby I see it differently.

I see it as they gave us exactly what they promised in the BASE but at $399 (just not what we expected).

the $299 is just a simplified sku. It's not the base SKU. IMO

but that's nonsense, the base is the base! These are just word games!

But I really don't care, at first I was mega-pissed, but after looking at it the only major problem I have is some cool games that might not make it to x360 now. Other than that there are no big losses, you can still pick up the HDD for a ver reasonable price.

For just $500 CAD I get a sweet console, HDD, component cables, headset and a remote control. To top that off, I just recently installed windows media centre, so for basically free I can use the x360 as a TiVo with built in game invites etc, pause live TV etc.

I'm happy, bring it on.

I personally think the "Core" is the "Base" because the "Premium" version couldn't be the base due to the name "Premium". With that name its implies that the HDD and Wireless Controller aren't "Standard" but if you pay $100 over the "Core" version, you'll get the HDD and Wireless Controller. I also think thats where the mislead was, if there wasn't any mislead, there wouldn't be any misconceptions and people wouldn't be angered over all this.

I can see how you could see it that way.

Reading MS description of the SKUs, the $399 version is the one called Console, the $299 is called the Core.

To me the console is the main system, the core is a watered down version as a cheap alternative to get into the game.

I just don't see the problem.

I think a lot of people complaining about Microsoft's "promises" simply don't understand (or fail to take into account) the business side of it. What if they had to re-evaluate both the shortterm and longterm profits and revenues for the system? What if certain deals fell through or changed and they could no longer offer a certain package at the specific price point they wanted? Things like this happen all the time and it's unfortunate for both the consumer and company/companies involed, but that's business.

Maybe I'm being dumb, but if you don't want the remote, headset and pap, then why not put them on eBay? I've no doubt there'll be plenty of saps that bought the $300 version and are now wanting a remote and headset........plus you'll then get your "$350" Xbox360 with HDD!
Fact is, MS have priced it thus and that aint likely to change any time soon, so stop whinging and get on with it - if you're not happy then just don't buy it!

Precisely. If you limit your argument to just the 2-3 month launch window, you are correct.

If you figure in the next 5 years, I am.

The premium bundle is a deal for the hardcore early adopters. The core SKU is intended for the casual gamer who will spend as little money as possible to get what they want. They start becoming a factor after the launch rush is over, and the longer the system is out, the more they factor in.

The only trouble I have with the logic of the oft used "casual gamer" remark is that the casual gamer is now expected to buy a console at the price ($299) of what had previously been the price for the hard-core gamer. So I have a difficult time seeing how the Core is geared towards them. The casual gamer usually waits for the price drop $249 (maybe) $199-$149(much more likely). So the second SKU IMO should have been introduced later in the consoles life, maybe year 2-3.

Aye the casual gamer is at the 150-200$ mark . Everything above 200$ is more of a true gamer market and above 300$ is hardcore .

I know very few people that will buy a console at 400$ . I know some people who buy 10 games a month but wont buy the console till its 200$

All things being equal I don't have that much of a problem with the price, except it stops me from buying two; I personally believe people are more upset about peripheral pricing than price of console...well that and the existence of a second SKU.

Just a point of fact though, my D-link xbox gaming adapter was/is $100, but that is because it is a bridge. I think MSFT was definitely taking notes from Apple on pricing...$100 for usb wireless, that damn thing should have a draft version of 802.11n or 108Mbps or something to justify the price. My hope is that I can use my existing d-link for wireless and I am pretty sure I will be able to use my Harmony remote for the 360, one can only hope.

As someone said, there is no "Premium" version. It's Xbox360 and Xbox360 Core. I'd prefer to call it Xbox360 "Bare" to Xbox 360Core, but I am sure the Microsoft marketing department wouldn't like the name. :p

My guess is that the $399 package we see now (maybe one without the remote and some other stuff) probably was the only SKU that Microsoft initially thought of (and thus all the "misleading" interviews). When they finally talked to the retailers and other "analysists" and what not, they probably convinced them that they _need_ a sub-$300 package.

And they are clearly saying that the 85% of the initial shipments will be the $399 packages. I'd like it to be $399-only for the initial couple of months, but I am sure others would cry foul...

Oh, well...

Hong.
