Cheap consoles?

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and I was wondering what everyone else thought.

Is there room in the market for a cheap, (sub $50), console? It seems to me that you could make something Genesis or SNES class (or maybe even higher), for next to nothing and sell it with 10 to 20 dollar games and have a nice niche for yourself. In some ways that category is already occupied by old used systems from NES to PS1. But people tend not to want to buy used systems, especially for Christmas gifts, if they can avoid it. I guess this is already being done somewhat with the PSOne, (as well as handhelds), and with a fair amount of success. But I kind of think there would be room for other players in that type of area, as development costs would likely be much lower, and you could afford to sell them at lower prices and still make a profit off the machine. It could be like a "My first videogame" type of deal. What do y'all think?

Yeah, I kind of mentioned that already. I guess I was thinking something along the lines of a new console being built around a 50 dollar, (ideally significantly less) price point. Could be a way for Sega or some other manufacturer to into the game, instead of *having* to build the end-all be-all console.

The games.. the games.. who is going to make the games. Developers would most likely shy away from it I'm guessing.

I would just get a PSONE or snes both of which have HUGE libraries and many AAA games.

Quite possibly. But how expensive would it be to make a PS1 level game, (hopefully with bilinear filtering!), especially if you can make a profit off the hardware and there's no need for software royalties? I believe 3DO initially had significant success in recruiting developers based on that model, (although they ultimately failed because their machine cost so damn much).

3DO did have royalties and made a big deal about how low they were until.........they jacked up the royalties and pissed off developers.. heh

Another thing PS1 games are missing is perspective correction/z-buffer .. hmm how about springling some free AA too? ;)

Dreamcast, anyone? :)

It must be cheap enough to manufacture by now..

I'd like to see that happen so much it hurts... :(

Actually if a company like Fisher price can make a $50 system I would think that it would be directed at kids putting you angainst nintendo which is why I think that no one has tried that yet......Besides the fact that if it were to be sucessful Nintendo or Sony would jump at the chance to make profits the same way......In other words you would create another market for the big boys....

Psychogenics: True.

It would be nice for somebody to get the rights from Sega and make the Dreamcast into a super-easy development platform for developers.. which would retail for very little money. It'd be compatible with all existing DC games, plus new ones directed at primarily kids. That sounds kind of like what Clashman is trying to get at, right?

I've been asking myself the same question....WHY DOESN'T SEGA JUST
LICENSE THE DEAMCAST OFF TO PEOPLE LIKE THOSE GUYS WHO WANT TO MAKE IT PORTABLE?they would make a killing without having to worry about either developing for the system or hardwaresales......Come'on Sega

Yeah, pretty much, although I don't see any reason why the games would have to be developed primarily for kids. As long as games targetted at an older demographic do not cost significantly more to make, (that may be the case), it could be fairly successful selling games for adults at reasonable prices.
