Can the psp ps3 linking ability be used to play ps3 games remotely on psp?

That is, similar to the psone functionality, can it be expected that similar can be done with ps3 games?

Say playing ffxiii, gtaiv, Gran Turismo V, MGS4 from the ps3 on the psp?

Short answer is yes, but very few games do so. I think some examples are Mainichi Issyo, PixelJunk Monster, and Lair (partial).

I think it's a great concept but it's ahead of its time.

It also doesn't help that the PSP lacks a second analog, R2, R3, L2, L3 and motion control.

For some games there shouldn't be a problem. For example traditional rpgs. The games can also be designed with psp modes in mind, maybe raising a vr-tamagotchi style creature with ps3 graphics? Or some side-missions, or crafting?

Yes, games can be designed for PSP use, but who would want to invest the effort in designing a game for PS3 and psp use, when it;s clearly such a niche concept? Media streaming is a nice idea, and a side effect of that is 'why not stream games too?' but IMO it'd be silly to design a PS3 game with the key controls limited to what a PSP can offer, just for the few thousand people who might try it out just for the fun of it - who would actually play PS3 games in a big way on PSP?

The latest High Stakes Poker update added support for Remote Play. When I was ill, I enjoyed playing PixelJunk Monsters on the PSP using remote play in bed. And as said, Lair has the option enabled and sort of works. Aqua Vita also works, but that's hardly a game. ;) Ditto for Folding@Home. And that's of course apart from all the regular PS3 features such as (video)chatting, watching movies from the PS3 hdd and dnla, etc.

The biggest problem that prevents remote play from being useful for most games are two-fold:

1. controls, which are obviously limited
2. lag, which is present still even when I use a local network and makes it not a whole lot of fun to play anything but a game that doesn't require fast reaction time such as PixelJunk Monsters, High Stakes, etc. Certain RPGs could work extremely well though, as could Sims type games.

I would like to play say final fantasy xiii on the psp while I'm on the go. It would also put psp graphics far beyond anything any cellular company, apple or nintendo can throw into the portable market. It could help sell psps, and as a side effect increase ps3 sales and ps3 game sales.

The psp already has virtually all games for free, from the nes era to the near present day era, and music, internet, and movie playback capability. You need to sell games that can't be pirated, and 50GB blu-rays just happen to be that.

It's a win win situation, and people will likely buy more psp games on the side, since many are not that into the homebrew hacking stuff.

Only as long as you're in range of a Wifi hub, and with lag that affects certain genres.

Not for the developers though. Unless you can present information that supports the idea PSP targeted controls in PS3 games will be used by a lot of PS3 owners (how many even have PSPs, let alone want the PSP to drive PS3 games?) I think you'll have a tough time convincing many folk that targeting PSP and somewhat constricting PS3 options is a good investment of time.

People are just uninformed of the vast powers and abilities of the psp. That's just all, but as word of mouth spreads, pandora's box will be unleashed ;). There does not exist any other portable device with the price + performance + capabilities of the psp, the psp is the true king of portables, ignorance keeps people buying cheap volvos and suzukis at high prices when they could have the ferrari that is the psp.

For large media, Portable Copy or even "RemotePlay copy" is more practical for PSP-PS3 integration. i.e., Copying movies from PS3 to PSP and watch on-the-go.

Specifically for PS3-PSP game integration, it may be feasible to do it the other way round: Copying PSP games to PS3 to play. But this may affect PSN game sales.

If the network is fast enough, serving PSP games from PS3 also does away with UMD disc swapping :)
One can always dream.

i would like to see the PSP or it descendants basically become a portable terminal to your home console. relys on improvements to the internet and wireless networks tho. there would still be portable games, that were more suitable to playing in short chunks. they'd just be running on the home console. perfect for PSN.

Greater future growth of the psp, should ensure more games are sold that can be played on the psp.

But the devs will only care about their own ends. For them it's important that their own software sells and quite frankly I can understand them. If you're dev'ing a PS3 title you're definitely not caring about some hypothetical psp sales in a mysterious and shrouded future in a game they might not even make... that's pretty much ludicrous.
Only way that's going to happen is, if Sony is paying them to do so...

Regardless how many games are sold on PSP, or what the PSP install base is even, the reason for a developer to invest time and money in adding PSP remote play to their PS3 title (to the potential detriment of their PS3 title) is dependent entirely on how many customers actually want it. If every PS3 owner on the planet had 2 PSPs and 16 games for the platform, if they don't care to play their PS3 games with reduced controls on a tiny screen and extra lag, or are never in a position to remote play because out of the house they don't have Wifi access, why bother to add the functionality to your PS3 game?

Just a question:

Are there even PS3 games that use this feature?

I remember Formula One was supposed to have it (using the PSP screen as the rearview mirror) but it got shelved in the final build/production version.

So yeah, any PS3 games out there that have some PSP integration or something?

EDIT: Of all the games in the list, the game I want most is Maininchi Isshyo. The content is updated with regular (daily ?) news. All the major PS3 technologies (RemotePlay, in-game XMB) are supported. There are goodies to collect. More importantly, the entire concept intrigues me and it looks entertaining enough.

Here's the Legendary Soldier: Solid Snake interview in Maininchi Issyo ;-)

I wanted to fool the game using a proxy so that it can present user-generated content. It is a perfect Game 3.0 game. Turning it into an animated community blog can be fun. In fact, the official Playstation blog should have a weekly/monthly show like this  with collectibles and Home integrated.
