Business Approach Comparison Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox

Kinect is great with my NW england accent. It's much easier and quicker to search Xbox Music with voice, or find movies/music/games straight from the dashboard.

I think microsoft tripped on the tv, tv, tv, tv thing. If there was deeper more meaningful message it got buried under the not so meaningful things. To make it worse they made XB1 the ET of the consoles. Just please let me call home. Whomever decided the content and way of presentation for XB1 event did piss poor job. And after internet got crazy MS didn't do very good job on containing the mess and setting things straight leading to more speculation and wild rumours. This one probably goes to school books how to not announce your product.

That's only because Sony has dodged the question. I'd wager a lot the ps4 will be calling home as well.

VR has been the holy grail for a couple of decades. But people have stuck with mouse and keyboard.

With NLP and not having to train VR, it's getting a bit of traction on mobile with Siri and Google Now. Makes more sense there because input is more limited.

With TV, tactile controls have been entrenched for decades. We learn the button layout of our remotes without trying and just know which ones to press, without even looking at them. That's not to say there isn't room to improve the experience of watching TV but there may be some inertia ...

I would rather press a button than use voice commands. So far siri and microsoft phones voice recognition fails so hard on my english accent that I don't bother anymore(and there is no support for my native language). Even if voice didn't fail all the time button is still faster and more convenient than talking. If you are referring to multitasking then I agree, wait and see is best approach :)

I just don't see tv/voice/waving hands as key differentiator. Soon if not already those will be present in all smart tv's or 50$ roku boxes. Or better yet the internet of things could happen and be controllable through your phone/tablet/pc/browser and ... console.

Xbox also has smartglass and a controller. They went as far as to make smartglass available on Android and iOS devices so that you are not locked into windows phone or surface. Why does having more control methods than just a controller at your disposal seem bad? They have all of your control methods and then some.

I don't dislike smartglass. I dislike voice controls. I do have ps vita, tablets, phones and whatnots that would be useful as touch screens and that I would be happy to use.

Microsoft clearly answered the question. They fucked you over.
Sony clearly said it's still being decided. They said "PlayStation has a long history of keeping its gamers happy and we won't make decisions that damage our relationship with them."

Some high level people did voice their support for the campaign:

You can see there's a producer and a senior biz dev, it's not low level people. Afterward they keep giving thanks to the community for voicing their opinion, which indicates the problem is about convincing other studios. They want our support.

Nothing like this happened on the MS side. What happened on the Microsoft side was "Deal with it." and "single player games must connect every 24 hours". The two situation aren't anything alike. But I'll eat my words if they end up doing exactly the same "24 hours for single player games".

According to RancidLunchMeat:

Except the difference here is that Sony has actually said that they will use algorithims to predict what you want and download them to your box without you asking or your knowledge and MS hasn't said anything of the sort.

And as far as the camera goes, we haven't heard anything to separate the two systems.

In fact, the only console that we know is going to collect our information and send it elsewhere to be reviewed is the PS4 because they very cleary said so at the about 24 minute mark of their presentation.

So maybe the issues aren't as one sided as you think.

TV input is really more limited because you won't always have the remote to hand when viewing.

MS havent confirmed anything yet either. Other than users being somehow able to sell used games online. Sony have offered little information on their DRM, letting MS take the heat.

missed the kotaku interview with the great Microsoft VP?
http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-does-require-internet-connection-cant-play-o-509164109
Kotaku: If I’m playing a single player game, do I have to be online at least once per hour or something like that? Or can I go weeks and weeks?
Harrison: I believe it’s 24 hours.
Kotaku: I’d have to connect online once every day.
Harrison: Correct.

well the tv tv tv thing is falling right in my lap... of course I am in the minority...(maybe)

in US, plenty of internet, DirecTV, and I am basically in my own tv game room whenever I am at home with the big HDTV, Laptop and surround sound etc...

I am CONSTANTLY switching between TV, Game, Laptop, phone, sound output.

So having this all at my voice command or and gestures... oh yea, it is my ultimate TV/game online experience.

I may even start calling my Dad on Skype now from there.

Fine. Go to the 30 minute mark of the Sony presentation. They talk about predictive downloads based on your gaming profile.
Yes, playstation plus does that already, I can tell you two don't even have a PS3. What he's saying is that it will recommend you the next film from a director which you've watched film from him before. It will also recommend you the 4th season of a show that you watch the first 3 seasons. If you played games from Insomniac, it will download the demo of the next Insomniac game. Something like that. That's exactly how netflix and amazon works. I guess you don't buy from amazon, and don't watch netflix either, huh?

You can opt out if you're paranoid. It's just a convenience.

Chris Lewis from MS Europe said something different.
... and that's not considered flip-floping from microsoft. No. They have no control on their vice-president.

The good thing coming out of this is that Adam Orth and Phil Harrison made it happen, the fiasco hopefully killed online DRM in it's infancy before it caused too much damage. (or maybe not, let's wait until E3 before declaring victory)
