Business Approach Comparison Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox

Large cable and media Companies like Comcast in the US are beginning to market services matching the the XB services. Voice search being a primary feature in their new X1 service. MS may not have been far off in their research but what happens when cables companies effectively match the benefits of Kinect with commodity cable boxes?

Comcast trying only further showcases how successful Microsoft's solution is likely to be. I don't know anyone would willingly loves their Comcast cable box.

LOL. UIs from hell. I wonder whats the politics or the motivation for some of the channel guides' channel order? Dish has got to be the worse.

SCE Japan Studios’ Mandate “is to Make Games That Nobody Else Can See on Another Console”

At the Sony PlayFest earlier this month, we had a chance to talk to the creative
director of SCE Japan Studios, and the writer/director of Puppeteer, Gavin Moore.

"As a developer, Naughty Dog’s mandate is to make AAA blockbusting Hollywood crushing titles, and it’s the same for Santa Monica – whereas our mandate at Japan Studios is to make games that nobody else can see on another console. So it’s kind of crazy in our studio because it’s a bunch of insane people coming up with strange ideas. We’re kind of left alone to come up with what we want. We’re obviously tracked, we do have green light meetings and stuff like that, but because we have smaller teams and smaller budgets to work with there’s less risk, so they allow us to be more creative."

He also explained why the PS3 is still getting so much support from Sony:

"It’s important for us that we don’t just drop the console and leave it for dead just because we’ve made another one. There are a lot of people that can’t afford a PlayStation 4 yet, or can’t even get their hands on one because Sony can only make so many. It’s important that we keep supporting those PlayStation fans, there’s something like 80 million PS3s – that’s a lot of fans out there that need games. Puppeteer is exactly the sort of game we should be making in my opinion."

Sony seems to know how to play certain people's emotional strings... I do wonder however if catering to the loud minority on the internet might bite them in the bum later.

There's always the danger of creating overly lofty expectations, or creating the impression that a massive multinational corporation is the friend of demographic X.

The same thing can lead to vastly different perceptions if it is coupled with disappointment, or worse, the perception of betrayal seeps in.

Well demographic X usually creates that bond and multinationals already know this. It's not always easy. Apple is THE master of this and the company as well as it's fanboys will be studied for years to come. :)

Sony at this point is the underdog here, because of their own mistakes of course, so aligning themselves with their fans expectations is probably the best thing they can do. Whether or not they follow through is anyone's guess BUT they don't have the cash MS does so if they are to succeed with this product they might just have to put their money where there mouth is. Because they are forced to try new things or anything I find them less obnoxious as opposed to last time around.

MS would cater if anybody trusted them :) They made their bed and they can lie in it for a while. Whatever sore feelings since E3 for fans of the product will be lost as soon as these things get released. Sony was arrogant and payed a price last generation, MS needs to pay a price and since they can afford it a stiff price it needs to be a stiff price otherwise they will not learn.:devilish:

Yes, indeed, even though I find it very interesting that people look at corporations like they were good or bad... If Sony is becoming the corporation who is the poster child for "consumer rights", then, oh Boy! :D

It seems that MS did not learn anything from Sonys bad start last time, they almost have the same amount of arrogance that Sony had with the PS3 (which is really hard to match).

But I really do not believe the lofty predictions out there that the Xbox One will "fail", I think it will be more or less the same as with this gen, Xbox leads in the US, PS4 in the EU etc.

Lets see how the changes in the Xbox leadership will pan out and what strategic adaptations will be made and how long will Sony push Mr. Cerny as some kind of saviour of the universe.

Why and how?

They are catering towards the so called 'hard-core' enthusiasts; whereas Microsoft is trying to cater towards a wider audience by including alternative controls from the start. I am just questioning whether gratification from online forums/game sites will translate into success with the mainstream. There were 100M Wii's sold in the last generation, and if that market can be captured it will give quite a large advantage to that console.

It isn't really about 'learning lessons'. Microsoft may have been wrong, but I bet that by the time the console launches most people would have forgotten that there was even a problem.

This point was driven home for me when I looked at IGN's buzz meter yesterday.

Forza 5 has almost no buzz on the meter, even though it is a franchise that typically sells 4 million units.

The average gamer isn't even engaged right now.

Forza has historically been a heavily bundled title, NPD data has never shown it to be a big seller. Forza 3 did 175k its first month and Forza 4 did worse. Forza 5 will have the luxury of being a big fish in a small pond so should do well.

I disagree about MS needing to learn a lesson. In fact I agree that lots of XB1 issues will be forgotten or even not known about by folks who will be buying the thing in the fall. This is why they needed to be mocked, marginalized and savaged in the press to teach them because they won't learn much later on :) They are a big company they can handle it.
