Bravia KDL-40XBR5 can upscale???

Ok, I'm thinking of buying a 40" Bravia HDtv (KDL-40XBR5), but I have a question about the BRAVIA Engine™ PRO.

Now I've read that it can upscale 480i/p as well as 720p/1080i to the screens native 1080p resolution, so I was wondering:-

1. How good is this upscaler for SD content (such as ps2 games)?

2. does the upscaler introduce lag, which would make playing ps2 games on it impossible?

All fixed pixel displays (Plasma, LCD) HAVE to upscale or downscale to their native resolution. If they don't, then any incoming signal at that resolution would not show up or be messed up but I doubt you're going to find any consumer set nowadays that this applies to.

I don't know about #1 but #2 is probably not something you have to worry about.

Head on over to http://www.avsforum.com/ and ask about #1. You should find lots of XBR owners over there who can give you their opinion on this. If you ask, they'll probably post pics too.

thanks for your answers and your link, I was hoping some people here would have some info but I guess I'll just head over to that link you gave, thanks again.

Upscaling isn't required, at least not for video content. My Philips 42" 1080 LCD can display SD content in a box, if the scaling option is set to "unscaled".

your tv can play SD content at it's original rez?

All HDtvs I've seen just have all content lower than 1080p simply upscaled by default to 1080p, and I've seen no option to disable the upscaling.

Yes, it can and does. Although I generally stretch everything to full screen, because some of the HD cable channels (while HD) often leave noticeable borders around the edges so I leave the scaling option set to "automatic" which just upscales everything to 1080P. I've tested with this setting on "unscaled" and it does display in the requested resolution of the video format.

wow, must be tiny on the screen. Most I know, including my own, only give dot-for-dot in HD modes.
