Brand new Mass Effect gameplay video.

Well, the final game's gonna contain like what, over 100 vast planets to explore? No wonder they aren't as intricately detailed as the surroundings in GoW. ;) I think they look impressive enough. If the rest of the game can live up to the standards established by KOTOR and Jade Empire, then Mass Effect is gonna be another must-have on 360.

nah, DVD couldnt hold every detail , shame it doesnt have bluray .. cough cough .. hah, joking ;)

Looks fantastic but I'm a bit concerned about some aliasing, flickering and there's something weird going on with the shadowing. Is it only me who's seeing this? Maybe something wrong with the playback on my PC but I think I saw the same problems on the first trailer they released.

Still, I'm buying a 360 just for this title alone anyway :)

it's a 480p video. And with their deferred shadowing system (I'm assuming default UE3.0), they'd get performance issues with AA.

But I haven't seen these shadowing anomalies in GoW vids I've seen. Never cared much about AA or not anyway, so the aliasing I can live with but the shadowing system just seems really weird at the moment.

Umm... I think you have MTV mixed up with MuchMusic, the Canadian equivalent of MTV headquartered in Toronto.

Actually I'm talking about Bioware ;)

BTW this viedo looks AMAZING. For those worried it will turn into a FPS, I wouldn't worry too much, your stats govern your ability to lock on to targets, and stats also govern the amount of damage you inflict, so there's not much aiming involved and most of it comes down to the character's strength and abilities. If you watch the video, you'll notice the reticule just snaps to the enemies.

Also, you can tactically move your other 2 squad mates, and can use either weapons, force-like jedi powers, or tech/hacking abilities, so it should be very KOTOR like in implementation, with an added level of tactics.

I really liked what I saw from the combat in the video, it was definately the roughest spot at E3 and now they seemed to have polished it very nicely, looks smooth & fast and definately not a FPS.

hm... tough to say why exactly the shadows are borked compared to Gears. Possibly with the larger gameworld and the fact that we've seen a bar scene with over 20 people, they might have lowered shadow resolution.

but gameplay looks like mes.

speak for yourself, I can't wait to hop in and play that!

Here you can see him using the force powers to move objects in the environment, pretty cool

Gears used some sort of jittered sampling of shadowmap based on screen location, this can look very bad in some cases.
Actually it reminded me of dithered shading of Tie Fighter long ago, its that bad.

In mass effect they just seem to take neighbour samples and do bilinear filtering between them thus creating very focused and aliased shadow border.
In both games shadow resolution and sampling should be improved to get less annoying results.

If the FPS elements are strong / well refined sign me up. I have only heard good things about Bioware, but most RPGs, even western ones, lack enough detail oriented action to get my interest. But these battles look user-input oriented over inventory "select x... then y... then z... followed by precanned actions and responses" and that is a perk. Should entice some "Halo" gamers as well. Looking good.

That said, the seld shadowing still is poor and drives me nuts.

This video does look incredible. I think it may be the new high water mark in console graphics replacing gears of war. It's that good.

Eh, technically no.
Gears looks absurdly good on a technical level. Just absurdly.

However..Mass Effects sophistication in design and art really shine on this game..and IMO make it just as visually gratifying as Gears.
It's got a nice balance of great textures and pure cleanliness/sharpness (I think Halo 3 single player will end up with that same balance, visually).

Nice effects, nice camera, nice animations, nice lighting, nice environments and touches like objects/debris floating because of the gravity (or lack thereof) just make it look that much more cool.

Nice! The low shadow resolution can give some weird looking artifacts occasionally, but overall I think it still looks pretty stunning. If the gameplay is traditional Bioware quality, this has classic written all over it. I want it ... now!

That girls voice is quite painful on the old ears. But otherwise it's very impressive :)

Lets hope this is a pre-gemini renderer version though.

They really do need to fix the shadows, at least for the up close conversations. It might be a problem with the Unreal 3 engine they're waiting for Epic to fix I guess.
