Black Reviews are in!

once again lack of solid AI ruins a good game.

You'd think developers would look at Halo, and figure it out! AI is key.

I don't understand why AI is still taking such a back seat, PD0, FarCry, Black, all new FPS's with terrible AI, and it makes for a much less challenging and fun game.
Apparently they don't want to put forth the effort or they simply don't have the resources. Bummer.

The last time i played Black it was just like Burnout, all casual style but no substance.
Hey, but Burnouts are very good. Don't know the latest one though, as I haven't personally played it.
Very arcadey, but they are racing games after all, how much depth can you put into an arcade racing game.
Not all games need that much touted "depth". There are plenty of games that are fun and addictive without the need to complex strategies and play-mechanichs.
The game featuring just a single player arcade campaign must affect the score in the highly populated fps market.

The Black scores are not bad by all means, I wouldn't quite call it a big disappointment or flop yet. It sounds like a solid single player arcade game which should not be put in the same genre class as Half Life 2, Unreal Tournament, Rainbow Sixes etc...

I've been playing Burnout Revenge a bit and i must say, the EA treatment makes me wanna puke. U know, all the "cool" intro's and the "cool" rock songs and the "cool" titles... It's just so tacky and... american! :devilish:

Got my copy from Play.com yesterday and I'm not seeing these awesome graphics, the sound seems messed up like its got an echo on it. And yeah the AI is terrible, it operates in zones, so you need to cross a certain point of the map before it reacts to you you could be stood directly infront of the AI and he won't shoot at you until you cross into his zone.

And where's the gun porn? You'll find more exciting and satisfying weaponry else where.

The bridge level:

i thought the graphic look good, even better than those Killzone one.

Those screens look incredible.

I am not sure whether to believe the average reviews on this. Sort of like if most critics like a movie it's usually bad.

I believe these reviews could be false.
I think we've found another of those paid EA moles...

Guy, you really crack me up. Please post more, you'll reach infamy status in no-time the way you're going...

How is a review "false"?

Gamerankings lists a lot of reviews from many different sites, and can give a general idea of a game because of that. It's hardly ever wrong, simply because the range of websites reviewing a certain game is really wide.

Even if one or two reviews are from crappy sites, it's easy to see what the general consensous from more reputable sites is.

I dont trust Gamespot reviews. They cater too the masses too much.

They typically give Nintendo games massive overratings imo, for one example.
Hold on, what? 'The Masses' are Nintendo fans now?

No review mentions it. IGN said there are slight slowdowns here and there, obviously when things get REALLY busy, but no word on the actual framerate.

The BBC liked it ...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4746412.stm

"A game that makes you crave red meat"

"This is visceral, uncomplicated, tough-as-nails shooting that mugs every last inch of grunt from the quivering geriatric PlayStation 2 hardware"

"The obvious downside, apart from the occasionally off-putting difficulty level, is a lack of multiplayer modes. But when the solo game is this fever-pitch, with only the next mission briefing allowing you to gasp for breath, who cares?"

I'm pretty sure it's 30. The slowdown seems to be localised to scripted events. In normal non set-piece confrontations the action can get pretty hairy and it'll lap it up. But there's a few situations [like only a handful from the whole game] where there are just a few too many explosions and smoke effects going on at the same time and it drops. The bridge section of the second level gets pretty bad at times, depending on whether you blow up a truck or not. We're definitely not talking colossus framerate here, it's an exception to an otherwise smooth 30 rule.

Hmmm, this doesn't bode well. I was rather looking forward to this title (Playstation 2), hoping it would have some compelling gameplay along with the impressive looking graphics shown in "previews". I am, however, picky to a fault with games and one thing I really enjoy with the PS - as opposed to PC gaming - is the quality and depth of the games and how they seem so polished. Oh well, I'll probably end up buying this anyways. I think I am one of the few who actually liked Killzone (and I consider myself picky! lol) so maybe it won't be that bad.

I'm pretty upset with the reviews of this game, I was expecting a explosive experience with this game. I pre-ordered it at my local game store, I think I'll just rate it myself when I pick it up on the 28th.

I am not really the type of person to judge a game by length, videos, or reviews, but more the hands-on experience.

Was/is the demo an indiaction of the final game for those who played both?

From playing the demo personally and then watching high resolution videos from GameSpot.com (Total Access :) ), it seems it is much more polished. The sound is superb and the visual is awesome, IMO. :)

Edit: Sorry about the double-post!

What's the framerate of the game? 60?

Likely 30, and probably not all that steady either.

Seems like a perfect $30 game... If I didn't already have preorder money down on it, I'd probably wait til a price drop (since I have preorder money down it's more easy to rationalize, since it'll only cost ~$35 at the time!).

Was playing some Halo on the PC for the first time recently and I must say the AI is pretty good, especailly for a game that is 4 years old. IMO very few games, at least FPS, have very good AI. The AI in CS:S is very good, HL1 had good AI (HL2 did too, but it was intentionally not very hard), Halo was good. But eagle eyes, cat ears, and perfect aim don't make good AI, and unfortunately that is how many games compensate.

I am going to get Black, looks like my cup of tea. Multiplayer doesn't bother me as I don't have network adaptor.

Splinter Cell 3 and Halo really stand out to me as superior AI. Also, the AI in Brothers in Arms 2 is pretty damn good, you can end up switching positions in a battle 2 or 3 times as they react to your flanking, and flank you.

AI makes all the difference, Halo co-op on Legendary easily goes down as one of my coolest gaming experiences ever.
