"Black's first few levels are exciting, but the action movie formula wears thin fast, and the game's over not long after.

The Good: Really sharp audiovisual presentation; makes a great first impression; lots of glass to break.

The Bad: Not much reason to play through it more than once; gameplay feels stuck in a rut; disappointing story; often-idiotic artificial intelligence."

well this is the first one so far... maybe they put all the power into the visuals?

So what is the numerical score?

The OPM UK mag has always been a bit too generous with the reviews, I think the Matrix game got a good score from them too.
Not the most reliable of review sources imo :)

Sounds like the "Black" is more a graphical and technical showpiece, a very very straightorward shooter with little depth.
Then again, I really can't think of a fps game with that much more "depth" ;)

Sounds like an entertaining title, but not quite my cup of tea, me being not a big fan of fps's. Usually one or two fps's per generation have been enough for me, this generation it was Half Life 2 (ok, it was on PC, but it's still "this gen" for me).
Don't know, but I get tired really soon on fps games, and "Black" souns like something I would just play for the destruction, but wouldn't care playing through without cheating (like most fps games, HL2 included).
It must be because the "stories" in these games erally aren't that good. Really, how much fgood story can you believably cram inbetween some shooting gallery levels

Got my copy from Play.com yesterday and I'm not seeing these awesome graphics, the sound seems messed up like its got an echo on it. And yeah the AI is terrible, it operates in zones, so you need to cross a certain point of the map before it reacts to you you could be stood directly infront of the AI and he won't shoot at you until you cross into his zone.

And where's the gun porn? You'll find more exciting and satisfying weaponry else where.

The bridge level:

The developers said they weren't going for depth or difficulty. It's a game to just go in shoot guns, blow stuff up and move through the game quickly. Like going to see an action movie, you don't care about the story, just good battles, lots of explosions and some awesome weapons.

I think based on that it'll get reviews in the 80% range.

Speng.

Yeah, the game is definately an ardace shooter, but still it should have a level of intelligence that's acceptable. If what HappyBread said is true (that the enemies won't "see" you even if u stand right in front of them, until you pass a certain "zone"), that's a flaw that can be considered a bug and it totally unacceptable for a final release.
Also, arcade with no multiplayer whatsoever?! I won't pay for this game.

once again lack of solid AI ruins a good game.

You'd think developers would look at Halo, and figure it out! AI is key.

I don't understand why AI is still taking such a back seat, PD0, FarCry, Black, all new FPS's with terrible AI, and it makes for a much less challenging and fun game.

Those screens look incredible.

I am not sure whether to believe the average reviews on this. Sort of like if most critics like a movie it's usually bad.

I believe these reviews could be false.

I think there's a rather cute juxtaposition between Black [the Hollywood Person Shooter] and the Jerry Bruckheimer movies it inspires to be. Both are loud, garish, superficial productions which do little to advance their genre and are both critically panned as average or overhyped, yet both [will] get gobbled up as fast as the audience eating their popcorn.

I dont trust Gamespot reviews. They cater too the masses too much.

They typically give Nintendo games massive overratings imo, for one example.

<sigh>Maybe tonight is just not a good night for hanging out here.

You did not give an "example". You stated hyperbole with nothing to back it up. This is not similar to an example at all.
