BioShock

Have you seen any of the vids? Looks like a corridor shooter to me.

How about the under lying gameplay though? Do your choices matter? Can you alter how the games action goes? Is there more than one way and path to a task? Can you skip "objectives" and if you can what happens then? A corridor shooter implies a very simple game, Prey for example. I don't think this is the case with Bioshock. You can't really tell what a game is just by looks. I really hope Bioshock has some depth to it...

Lol, not even close. Watch some more vids, or pay closer attention. Every fight in Bioshock has multiple ways to go about it, it's an FPS RPG not a corridor shooter.

I watched this:

The fire fights look like a pretty standard FPS to me. I'm sure they are not showing lots of the "boring" gameplay mechanics (RPG stuff) for demos. Running room to room shooting guys is pretty much the definition of a corridor shooter though. It looks like a Jedi Knight version of Condemned.

I just noticed the two videos are the same (I think).

You don't have to shoot the guys, you can do a variety of different things. For example, you could cast an enrage plasmid on one enemy, and cause him to fight other enemies in the room, or you could hack the AI system and have them battle the enemy while you sneak by, or you could use your teleportation powers, and probably half a dozen other things they haven't mentioned.

Not to mention, depending on how you've explored and leveled your character, your approaches will vary greatly depending on the powers you have.

If you are exploiting the little sisters and harvesting adam, you will have a completely different (more aggressive?) powerset than if you go the other route and protect them. The dev's state there are also rewards for not harvesting Adam, and I can only wonder what those are.

Maybe it is a linear game, but the impression I've got is that you basically explore this station, leveling your character, and using your brain more often tahn your trigger finger to get your way out of sticky situations.

It's the spiritual sequal to System Shock 2, which is apparently one of teh best games ever made, and was also a FPS RPG:
In these aspects, System Shock 2 has as much in common with computer role-playing games as with first person shooters. The gameplay requires more adaptability and alternative problem solving than most first-person shooters, mainly because combat is very challenging by comparison: many weapons in System Shock 2 require special skills, while both ammunition and skill points are hard to come by.

Furthermore, guns degrade very fast while being used in the artificial entropy field encompassing the ship and can eventually break and must be maintained and/or repaired with the use of certain skills or items reliant on skill values. In a typical game, the player will only be able to use half of the weapons or psionic disciplines depending on one's choice of specialization. This provides a good amount of replayability and forces the player to think about their choices.

Condemned had no where near the depth this game is promising, not even in the same league.

None of that really comes across in the video, he was running around blowing crap up. Sometimes it was a gun, sometimes it was electricity/telekinesis. It looks cool though.

No, hence my 'watch more videos' comment!

There have been two large dev walkthroughs for the game, both are available in 720p on XB Marketplace, and they make it fairly clear how many different options are available.

The first one, narrated by Ken Levine is probably the best, but the hunting the big daddy video is really cool too.

The reason this new video is so impressive is that it finally shows off alot of different action sequences and powers, as well as some really sweet GFX, like when the tunnel is collapsing and water flooding everywhere.

I guess if this was the only video you've seen, it would look like a straight shooter, but it's really nowhere close.

I can hunt down more when I'm not at work.

wait til you get home and just check out the XBL marketplace movies to bring you up to speed.

the game is hot... too bad I'll probably get motion sickness from it though. :???:

Gamespots Game of Show at E3 06 BTW

But all the cleverness we can muster up from the depths of our being still isn't enough to adequately express just how original and tantalizing BioShock came across to us at E3 2006. It left us deep in thought, wondering why such a visually impressive, profoundly interesting game would be tucked away beneath the surface of all the agitated excitement on the show floor. BioShock stunned us only behind closed doors at publisher 2K Games' booth, as developers from Irrational Games demonstrated some of the game's finer points in a working demo. There's little to show for it besides some pretty-looking still images (that are, in fact, suggestive of how the game looks in full motion) and our own tall tales about how well the game seems to be coming together. So take our word for it when we say that, of all the 1,000-plus games we saw at E3 2006, BioShock stood out the most vividly in our collective memory.

However, no single Xbox 360 game at the show got us worked up quite like BioShock, which was tucked away behind closed doors at publisher 2K Games' booth. Its stunning art direction, remarkably creepy and compelling premise, and intriguingly open-ended design served as a powerful demonstration of what the 360 seems capable of. And, poignantly enough, developer Irrational Games opted to show off BioShock on the 360 in particular, even though it's also headed to the PC and PlayStation 3.

Here is demo from last E3 with ken Levine's commentary:

It is still first-person shooter, but it forces you to be creative about encountered problems and solving them. Straigthforward shooting supposedly isn't the best solution in many situations in this game, but of course there will be much shooting, as showed in the latest video. I hope Irrational will deliver on their promise (I'm big System Shock 2 fan)

I hope it does live up to expectations, but open-endedness is rarely achieved and often touted.

I want open ended and humongous. I can handle 30-40 3d levels arranged in a metroid like fashion. The space theme is a classic but I trust they can get the bio/horror mood across. I'm a big fan of the SS and Thief games.

I didn't forget about this

I grabbed the SD version and started watching it until my kid complained it was scary (it was). So I deleted it and queued the HD version which is on my HD now waiting for me.

Edit: Great video, I was so hoping he'd put a bullet in the little girls head at the end :)
