Beyond3D podcast

To be fair, very often the interviewee won't know how the interviewer will write the entire discussion until after the fact. Some loaded questions can be avoided, but it may be difficult to control the slant of the entire session.

Also, it may be hard for developers to comment specifically on a topic because there are many variables in design and implementation. Forumites are more outspoken and tend to generalize because forum is perceived as a more informal channel. If one can set up the context properly, they may be able to express more, without violating NDAs.

Arwin, I'll respond to your post later. There are some deeper issues to think about. :)

It´s probably hard enough just to get the regulars meeting up at the right time as it is.

I immediately think of segments. For those handling a different segment that participate live during recording can pre-record and submit. I'm thinking something like a Twilight Zone. You have your main theme but each segment doesn't link with the other...or a radio station (Beyond3D), with various shows within.

That is all I can think of regarding the time difference for those that will participate.

Segments can work. The Idle Thumbs podcast tends to work like that a lot. It does come across fragmented very quickly though and you can easily lose some intimacy or balance. They seem to get better at it as time goes on though, and it could certainly be interesting.

It's not as easy to record a skype conference call as I thought by the way. I may end up using two computers for it.

EDIT: nope, not necessary. I was thinking "I wish I had that 'record what you hear' option". So I googled that, and it's actually there on this Realtek card in Vista, called Stereo Mix. You just have to show hidden devices. Must say by the way that the way audio devices are handled in Vista is pretty neat, being able to manage the different levels for individual applications and all that. So I think I should be good to go already.

hm... seems like something that could be done via Party Chat on 360 via capture card on PC. Just set the game-audio to nil and have the voice chat come through the headset and "speakers" that get fed into the capture card. At the very least, everyone can be playing a game and maybe have something spontaneous to discuss? :)

I figured it out (see edit above), but yep, that should be able to work too. In fact I've been thinking about doing that, as I've got my 360 in my study and should be easy to add to the mixing table. That said, other podcasts have talked about doing this and they weren't happy - there are apparently too many bugs in the party thing, making it hard to handle if someone drops out etc.

Home would work as well of course - voice chat in a private room supports up to 64 people, but clearly you can't do a game at the same time yet. But there are a number of games that would work pretty well. We'll see.

First task now is getting people who are willing to chat along. While awaiting volunteers I'll see about compiling some kind of programme for the first concept episode. Also, I'll have to talk into a microphone a lot over the next days to get myself more comfortable in doing so and see what kind of English suits me best (it being a second language, I'm a bit of a Chameleon - I default to almost ridiculous posh U.K. English, but can switch to California mode if I talk to someone from the U.S., and given a bit of time I tend to end up mimicking everyone else's accent automatically. Once someone thought I was mocking him, but it's just something that happens automatically, it makes me easier to understand for the other person).

I have no clue about games programming and suck at playing, but I'll help if I can. What I do know a little about is networks, so it you want to do a segment on that I can hopefully input something there.

Spontaneous game discussion would be extremely cool. In particular you could do realtime reviews. Capture the audio feed as people play, and then edit to pick out the highlights. With zillions of Live! download titles of various sort, reviews of this while playing would probably attract attention.

I'd like a developers' podcast, where developers can speak their piece and maybe slag off an unappreciative, overdemanding public! Game development from their perspective would be truly worthwhile.

But most importantly I'd like people who actually have something meaningful to say. I don't listen to podcasts because of the ones I've listened to, they have been vapid, like listening in on 14 year olds in the school yard. Lots of 'yeah, um, great, cool, <pause>, I really liked that." Way dull! Again, AlStrong's idea of a natural game chat could solve a lot of this, adding a background experience that should inspire conversation.

Is this a podcast by B3D staff or register users to their open forums?

IMO, allowing non-staff forum members to run a product under the B3D name probably isn't a good idea.

Who's going to be the Halo/360 addict Luke Smith & the SDF Shane Bettenhausen? Man, that would be cool. Need to get the 360 Live Party crew for some real-time chats, maybe 1on1 against the PS3 Home guys? LOL

I'll pass on text chat room party :(

I think if we just record our Live Party session chats, it'll make for some amazing podcast material.

I think he meant a Home club house chat but of course, you couldn't simultaneously play games.

I tend to do the same thing. Never knew why but it explains why some people asked where I was from. I just looked at them like they were stupid.

If someone provides booze I'll be there in a minute... but seriously. I would like to have a full coverage of whats new on PSN, with a quick preview from people who bought the stuff and played it for just a few hours (to get the information out quicker).

edit: Please record it in Home! :D (parts of it)

That's why I always tell the KZ2 party to name our warzone "Free Beer Inside" to get it loaded with people quickly.

Ha ha - obviously that wasn't what I was thinking about, wouldn't realy work on radio. ;)

Sure, we could definitely try that.

If you want to consider Home, might as well bug the Sony guys here to see if we can get hold of a Home SDK. :p

EDIT: Oh wait, I forgot you already have a huge mansion in Home.
