Btw Andrew, you can always turn it off or mute individual players.
Oh I'm well aware and that was what I was saying - I would immediately turn it off entirely. i.e. I'd be one of those "annoying" people who you try to talk to and tell me what to do and I don't have voice on
In other types of games voice with the whole team is critical, but frankly I don't really care about other people in Battlefield that I don't know. Might as well be better bots as far as I'm concerned. Harsh, I know, but I'm there to enjoy some gaming time with my friends, not try and go for the best stats ever. [Aside: in a game that allows joining arbitrary servers and forming arbitrary teams stats are pretty meaningless anyways. And rightfully so... who cares.]
But like I said, I can understand why some people want it. I definitely use voice chat a lot in games like DOTA2, HoN, etc. In the mean time though I'd suggest just finding a server with an associated VOIP channel and join that. The real advantage of dedicated servers is that you can get to know the community on one particular server which makes it even more fun
Maybe we should have a Beyond3D VOIP server...
Honestly if I had one complain about BF3 (which I still think is far and above the best multiplayer FPS game ever) it would be the class balance. Particularly on B2K and other fairly quickly-spawning vehicle maps the vast majority of people just have to be engis to be practical. Since none of the other three classes have any reliable way of dealing with vehicles, you simply need engineers. That in and of itself isn't a problem, the real issue is that engi weapons are only very marginally worse than assault weapons, meaning that the "role" of assaults on B2K and similar maps is pretty limited. Support and snipers are all but irrelevant... 1-2 of each is more than enough to cover any useful roles that they have.
Now I like engi, but it's getting really boring being engi all the time. Still, when I switch to another class, I'm vastly less effective because half the time you just get killed/pinned by a vehicle. Even if you get in a vehicle yourself if you don't have the ability to hop out and repair then you're needlessly crippling yourself.
Anyways it's not the end of the world, but class balance could use some work on the more vehicle heavy maps. I think a slight nerf to the effectiveness of engi guns especially at mid range (or a buff to assault rifles) would go a long way to introducing a more useful "counter" to the fact that 90% of people are engis. A more drastic change would involve spreading out a few of the other anti-vehicle weapons (say giving mines to a different class or something), but that's probably too risky at this point.
